The report focuses on 19 major insects and diseases that annually cause defoliation and mortality in U.S. forests. The 2007 report, Major Forest Insect and Disease Conditions in the United States 2007 (http://www.fs.fed.us/foresthealth/publications.shtml#reports) provides background on the insects and diseases described in this report. Refer to the 2007 report for more detailed information. This 2015 update provides a national summary of the major changes and status of 19 forest pests with updated charts, tables, and maps. Additional information on these and other pests is available at https://www.fs.fed.us/foresthealth/applied-sciences/mapping-reporting/ detection-surveys.shtml. The information in this report is provided by the Forest Health Protection program of the Forest Service and its State partners. This program serves all Federal lands, including National Forest System lands, lands administered by the U.S. Departments of Defense and the Interior, and tribal lands. The program also provides assistance to private landowners through State foresters and other State agencies. Key elements of the program are detecting and reporting insect and disease epidemics. State and Forest Service program specialists regularly conduct detection and monitoring surveys. For additional information about conditions, contact a Forest Service office listed on the next page (see map for office coverage) or your State forester.     RESEARCH LABORATORY TECHNICAL REPORT Dogwood Anthracnose By The Bartlett Lab Staff Anthracnose caused by the fungus Discula destructiva is a potentially fatal disease of dogwood. All varieties of the native flowering dogwood (Cornus florida and C. nuttallii) are susceptible. The disease usually starts on lower leaves and progresses into twigs and branches. Infected trees are severely weakened so that secondary canker and root rot diseases can infect and kill the tree. Discula infection usually occurs during cool, rainy periods in the spring. The fungal spores are spread by rain and wind. Symptoms branches (water sprouts) are more susceptible to the fungus. Often, the first symptoms of Discula destructiva anthracnose are spots on the lower leaves and flower The speed at which the disease progresses in the tree bracts. Signed: _____________ Date: 4th May 2014 2 ABSTRACT Beech bark disease (BBD) is an invasive insect and pathogen disease complex that is currently devastating American beech (Fagus grandifolia) in North America. The disease complex consists of the sap-sucking scale insect, Cryptococcus fagisuga and sequential attack by Neonectria fungi (principally Neonectria faginata). The scale insect is not native to North America and is thought to have been introduced there on seedlings of F. sylvatica from Europe. Conventional control strategies are of limited efficacy in forestry systems and removal of heavily infested trees is the only successful method to reduce the spread of the disease. However, an alternative strategy could be the use of biological control, using fungi. Fungal endophytes and/or entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) could have potential for both the insect and fungal components of this highly invasive disease. Over 600 endophytes were isolated from healthy stems of F. sylvatica and 13 EPF were isolated from C. fagisuga cadavers in its centre of origin. A selection of these isolates was screened in vitro for their suitability as biological control agents. Two Beauveria and two Lecanicillium isolates were assessed for their suitability as biological control agents for C.

    Conserving Oaks in North American Plant Collections: A Collaborative Approach Emily Griswold Assistant Director of Horticulture UC Davis Arboretum, University of California, Davis, CA 95616 As much as any ardent collector would love to comprehensively represent the variety of the genus Quercus in her garden, the great taxonomic diversity, range of natural habitats, and large mature size of oaks make that virtually impossible. With that in mind, a new cooperative group of American public gardens has recently formed with the goal of representing the oak diversity of North America in its collections. The 15 member gardens were recently recognized as the first multi-institutional collection of the North American Plant Collections Consortium (NAPCC).
