View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by LSE Theses Online THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE A Politics of Regulation: Haussmann’s Planning Practice and Badiou’s Philosophy Antoine Michel Paccoud A thesis submitted to the Department of Geography and Environment of the London School of Economics for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, London, September 2012 1 DECLARATION I certify that the thesis I have presented for examination for the MPhil/PhD degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science is solely my own work other than where I have clearly indicated that it is the work of others (in which case the extent of any work carried out jointly by me and any other person is clearly identified in it). The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. Quotation from it is permitted, provided that full acknowledgement is made. This thesis may not be reproduced without my prior written consent. I warrant that this authorisation does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. I declare that my thesis consists of 103,470 words (including 6,232 words of footnotes, essentially the original French versions of material quoted within the text). 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is concerned with empirically determining whether a particular political sequence can be interpreted through Badiou’s philosophy. It focuses on the public works that transformed Paris in the middle of the 19th century, and more specifically on Haussmann’s planning practice. From an epistolary exchange between property owners, Haussmann and the Minister of the Interior during Haussmann’s first years as Prefect of the Seine, the thesis draws out a political event: the playing out in a singular context of an opposition over a political practice predicated on equality.

  • Horse Stud Farm in Dobrzyniewo
livestock breeding LIVESTOCK BREEDING The achieved genetic gain is determined by two factors – the genetic potential of animals and environmental conditions in which this potential may be realised. To obtain high productivity levels while ensuring good animal fertility and health, both of these factors have to be refined simultaneously. Genetic improvement is a long-term and costly process that requires a consistent approach to selection and matching. The nucleus herds supervised by the National Support Centre for Agriculture (Krajowy Ośrodek Wsparcia Rolnictwa – KOWR) represent a high genetic level, which, in order to be maintained, necessitates drawing on global genetic resources, including the use of Polish- and foreign-bred bulls for breeding. Apart from using the semen of prominent bulls, embryo transfer constitutes one of the most effective and relatively quick methods enabling genetic gain. The primary objective of embryo transfer is to produce bulls for insemination and heifers bred for improving their own herds. In 2017, a total of 1,272 embryos were obtained and 984 embryos were transferred. Transfer efficacy was 57%. A high animal genetic potential is displayed only in good environmental conditions, when a proper nutrition programme based on balanced feed intake is ensured. Our companies have built new livestock buildings or modernised the existing ones, using innovative and functional technical solutions applied in the global livestock building industry. In barns, cows can move around freely, enjoy easy access to feed and have uninterrupted air circulation. With a loose-housing system, it was possible to identify technological and feeding groups, depending on the milk yield and physiological status of cows, as well as to apply precise feed rations under the TMR feeding system.

  • Early History of Thoroughbred Horses in Virginia (1730-1865)
Early History of Thoroughbred Horses in Virginia (1730-1865) Old Capitol at Williamsburg with Guests shown on Horseback and in a Horse-drawn Carriage Virginia History Series #11-08 © 2008 First Horse Races in North America/Virginia (1665/1674) The first race-course in North America was built on the Salisbury Plains (now known as the Hempstead Plains) of Long Island, New York in 1665. The present site of Belmont Park is on the Western edge of the Hempstead Plains. In 1665, the first horse racing meet in North America was held at this race-course called “Newmarket” after the famous track in England. These early races were match events between two or three horses and were run in heats at a distance of 3 or 4 miles; a horse had to complete in at least two heats to be judged the winner. By the mid-18th century, single, "dash" races of a mile or so were the norm. Virginia's partnership with horses began back in 1610 with the arrival of the first horses to the Virginia colonies. Forward thinking Virginia colonists began to improve upon the speed of these short stocky horses by introducing some of the best early imports from England into their local bloodlines. Horse racing has always been popular in Virginia, especially during Colonial times when one-on-one matches took place down village streets, country lanes and across level pastures. Some historians claim that the first American Horse races were held near Richmond in Enrico County (now Henrico County), Virginia, in 1674. A Match Race at Tucker’s Quarter Paths – painting by Sam Savitt Early Racing in America Boston vs Fashion (The Great Match Race) Importation of Thoroughbreds into America The first Thoroughbred horse imported into the American Colonies was Bulle Rock (GB), who was imported in 1730 by Samuel Gist of Hanover County, Virginia.

' tbe :r!)eimatbrtef A Newsletter Magazine of the Gennan·Bohemian Heritage Society Celebrating the G BHS ' 21st year Vol XVI I No. 4 December 2006 Christmas in Egerland A Homeland Story about the Lipizzaner Horses Provided by Stefan Stippler The establishment of the stud farm in Hostau with its three external fannyards Zwirschen, Hassalitz and Taschlowitz has its origin in the results ofthe First World War, when studs in Savatka (Galicia) and Radautz (Bukowina) had to be evacuated because of the approaching enemy. The yards of the Prince Kar! of Trauttmansdorff-Weinsberg ( 1845-1921) were leased by the Austrian Hungarian Agricultural Ministry and the horses were accommodated there after the troublesome joumey. After 1916 all military studs were dissolved by the govemment at that time and the military stud of Hostau was converted into a regular stud farm . Three stallions were assigned to Hostau: an Arab half-breed, an English half-breed and a Hanoverian. The main stud with 200 mares and three stallions was placed at the fannyard in Zwirschen. After the end of the war, the horses were transferred to Klattau, but as soon as normal conditions were gained again, the remaining horses returned back to Hostau. Some years later the leasehold became property of the Czechoslovakian state. After 1918 the majority of the fields were converted into pastures. The area of 1200 acreswas reduced to 250 acres for husbandry. The number of horses was 500 at this time. The stud fa rm increased. Some thoroughbred mares and thorougbbred and half-breed stalli ons were purchased abroad.
