(Ph.D., History) The Emigrant Métis of Kansas: Rethinking the Pioneer Narrative Dissertation directed by Associate Professor Ralph Mann Under the U.S. government’s nineteenth century Indian removal policies, more than ten thousand Eastern Indians, mostly Algonquians from the Great Lakes region, relocated in the 1830s and 1840s beyond the western border of Missouri to what today is the state of Kansas. With them went a number of mixed-race people – the métis, who were born of the fur trade and the interracial unions that it spawned. This dissertation focuses on métis among one emigrant group, the Potawatomi, who removed to a reservation in Kansas that sat directly in the path of the great overland migration to Oregon and California. -
Iowa Indians' Political and Economic Adaptations
“We are not now as we once were”: Iowa Indians’ Political and Economic Adaptations during U.S. Incorporation David Bernstein, University of Wisconsin–Madison Abstract. The historical legacy of the eastern prairies between the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in the 1830s is dominated by a series of violent confrontations between Indians and the U.S. Army. Though the “Black Hawk Wars” involved just a few of the Indians living along the Mississippi River watershed, these conflicts epitomize commonly held understandings of Indian-white relations in the region: a violent clash of cultures in which Indians valiantly, but unsuccessfully, fought against American expansion. Contradicting this binary, Iowa Indian leaders under- stood that their communities had potentially much to gain from aspects of white expansion. The primary purpose of this article is to look beyond circumscribed definitions of Indian-white relations and to illustrate how the Iowa used an assort- ment of political, economic, and social tactics to help shape their rapidly changing world. Confronting declining wildlife resources, the Iowa began reshaping their economies toward what they hoped would be a more stable agricultural future while initiating diplomatic relations with American agents to help mitigate recur- ring and more immediate tensions with powerful Indian adversaries. In the summer of 1830, U.S. Treaty Commissioner William Clark called a council at Prairie du Chien on the Mississippi River with members of the Sac, Fox, Sioux, and Iowa tribes in order to clarify boundaries between these rival Indian groups. Clark wanted to make the region between the Mississippi and Missouri rivers more attractive to Euro-American settlers, and he hoped that defining the Indians’ territorial boundaries would quell the intratribal warfare that had marked the previous decade. -

This oil portrait, probably painted about 1835 by an unknown artist, was presented to the Minnesota Historical Society in 1947 by Mrs. Virginia Bonne1' Pesch and John F. Bonner, Taliaferro's gmndniece and g1·andnephew. The Lawrence Taliaferro Papers THE MANUSCRIPTS of Lawrence Taliaferro in the Minnesota HistOlicai Society measure two linear feet and include correspondence and miscellaneous papers (1813-68) arranged in chronological order as well as nineteen volumes. A few of the papers relate to the War of 1812 and Taliaferro's experiences in the army between 1813 and 181g. The bulk of the collection documents his career as United States Indian agent from 1820 to 1839 at the St. Peters Agency near Fort Snelling in present-day Minnesota. Copies of letters sent are missing for much of the period between 1829 and 1836. Financial records, lacking for the years from 1823 to 1829, are far from complete for the rest of the period. Only a few items cover Taliafeno's life after leaving the Indian service in 1839. -

HALL: Friends Like These: The United States’ Indian Allies in the Black Hawk War, 1832 (Under the direction of R. Don Higginbotham.) “Friends Like These” examines the decision by elements of the Menominee, Dakota, Potawatomi, and Ho Chunk tribes to ally with the United States government during the Black Hawk War of 1832. Because this conflict is usually depicted as a land- grab by ravenous settlers and the war occurred within two years of the passage of the Indian Removal Act, the military participation of these tribes seems incongruous. This work seeks to determine why various bands of these tribes cooperated with the U.S. Army when such alliance seemed inimical to the interests of their respective tribes. Moreover, it explores the extent to which the Americans conceived of themselves as allies to the Indians while assessing the consequences of this alliance for each of the tribes involved. This study finds that the Indians participated in the Black Hawk War to fulfill their own wartime objectives, and that in so doing they sought to apply familiar forms to the new situation that unfolded in the years after the War of 1812. -
