Iowa hadn’t become a state yet and neither had Wisconsin. The first towns in the county were Buffalo, Davenport and Rockingham. When it came time to choose a county seat by election, both Davenport and Rockingham were in the running. FORMER GOVERNORS OF ILLINOIS Shadrach Bond (D-R*) — 1818-1822 Illinois’ first Governor was born in Maryland and moved to the North - west Territory in 1794 in present-day Monroe County. Bond helped organize the Illinois Territory in 1809, represented Illinois in Congress and was elected Governor without opposition in 1818. He was an advo- cate for a canal connecting Lake Michigan and the Illinois River, as well as for state education. A year after Bond became Gov ernor, the state capital moved from Kaskaskia to Vandalia. The first Illinois Constitution prohibited a Governor from serving two terms, so Bond did not seek reelection. Bond County was named in his honor. He is buried in Chester. (1773- 1832) Edward Coles (D-R*) — 1822-1826 The second Illinois Governor was born in Virginia and attended William and Mary College. Coles inherited a large plantation with slaves but did not support slavery so he moved to a free state. He served as private secretary under President Madison for six years, during which he worked with Thomas Jefferson to promote the eman- cipation of slaves. He settled in Edwardsville in 1818, where he helped free the slaves in the area. As Governor, Coles advocated the Illinois- Michigan Canal, prohibition of slavery and reorganization of the state’s judiciary. Coles County was named in his honor. He is buried in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (1786-1868) Ninian Edwards (D-R*) — 1826-1830 Before becoming Governor, Edwards was appointed the first Governor of the Illinois Territory by President Madison, serving from 1809 to 1818. Born in Maryland, he attended college in Pennsylvania, where he studied law, and then served in a variety of judgeships in Kentucky. -

First, the place of writing among the various systems of human inter communication is discussed. This is followed by four Tchapters devoted to the descriptive and comparative treatment of the various types of writing in the world. The sixth chapter deals with the evolution of writing from the earliest stages of picture writing to a full alphabet. The next four chapters deal with general problems, such as the future of writing and the relationship of writing to speech, art, and religion. Of the two final chapters, one contains the first attempt to establish a full terminology of writing, the other an extensive bibliography. The aim of this study is to lay a foundation for a new science of writing which might be called grammatology. While the general histories of writing treat individual writings mainly from a descriptive-historical point of view, the new science attempts to establish general principles governing the use and evolution of writing on a comparative-typological basis. -

Pseudo Noun Conflation in Ojibwa
Nominal incorporation and word formation via phrasal movement: evidence from Ojibwe Abstract The present paper is a contribution to on-going discussion on the nature of nominal incorporation (NI), denominal verbs, and the composition of words in polysynthetic languages. In the context of Ojibwe, an Algonquian language, the article argues that, before they undergo morphological merger with the verb at PF, INs raise to their hosts in the syntax via phrasal movement. I show that the Ojibwe INs are complex elements that surface with derivational and inflectional affixes, and sometimes even with modifiers, falsifying the hypothesis according to which only bare nominal roots can be incorporated. The paper focuses on a special kind of NI where the incorporator is a bound affix argued to be a light verb v with both lexical and functional properties. Unlike simple verbalizers that turn a noun into a verb, it never conflates with the nominal with which it merges, in sharp contrast with denominal verb formation in English or French. I argue that: (i) the language has a process of light verb NI; (ii) that it is productive and compositional; (iii) that it is syntactic rather than lexical; (iv) that the incorporee is a phrase rather than a head and that it raises in the syntax via XP movement (with subsequent morphological merger at PF). -

1 Creating a Frontier War: Harrison, Prophetstown, and the War of 1812. Patrick Bottiger, Ph.D., [email protected] Most scholars would agree that the frontier was a violent place. But only recently have academics begun to examine the extent to which frontier settlers used violence as a way to empower themselves and to protect their interests. Moreover, when historians do talk about violence, they typically frame it as the by-product of American nationalism and expansion. For them, violence is the logical result of the American nation state’s dispossessing American Indians of their lands. Perhaps one of the most striking representations of the violent transition from frontier to nation state is that of Indiana Territory’s contested spaces. While many scholars see this violence as the logical conclusion to Anglo-American expansionist aims, I argue that marginalized French, Miamis, and even American communities created a frontier atmosphere conducive to violence (such as that at the Battle of Tippecanoe) as a means to empower their own agendas. Harrison found himself backed into a corner created by the self-serving interests of Miami, French, and American factions, but also Harrison own efforts to save his job. The question today is not if Harrison took command, but why he did so. The arrival of the Shawnee Prophet and his band of nativists forced the French and Miamis to take overt action against Prophetstown. Furious that the Shawnee Prophet established his community in the heart of Miami territory, the French and Miamis quickly identified the Prophet as a threat to regional stability. -
Choctaw Code Talkers of WWI and WWII
They Served They Sacrificed Telephone Warriors Choctaw Code Talkers Soldiers who used their native language as a weapon against the enemy, making a marked difference in the outcome of World War I Telephone Warriors - beginning the weapon of words Among the Choctaw warriors of WWI were fifteen members of the 142nd Infantry Regiment, a member of the 143rd and two members of the 141st Infantry Regiment who are now heralded as “WWI Choctaw Code Talkers.” All Regiments were part of the 36th Division. The Code Talkers from the 142nd were: Solomon Bond Lewis; Mitchell Bobb; Robert Taylor; Calvin Wilson; Pete Maytubby; James M. Edwards; Jeff Nelson; Tobias William Frazier; Benjamin W. Hampton; Albert Billy; Walter Veach; Joseph Davenport; George Davenport; Noel Johnson; and Ben Colbert. The member of the 143rd was Victor Brown and the Choctaw Code Talkers in the 141st were Ben Carterby and Joseph Okla- hombi. Otis Leader served in the 1sr Division, 16th Infantry. All of these soldiers came together in WWI in France in October and November of 1918 to fight as a unified force against the enemy. On October 1, 1917, the 142nd was organized as regular infantry and given training at Camp Bowie near Fort Worth as part of the 36th Division. Transferred to France for action, the first unit of the division arrived in France, May 31, 1918, and the last August 12, 1918. The 36th Division moved to the western front on October 6, 1918. Although the American forces were late in entering the war that had begun in 1914, their participation provided the margin of victory as the war came to the end. -

(Ph.D., History) The Emigrant Métis of Kansas: Rethinking the Pioneer Narrative Dissertation directed by Associate Professor Ralph Mann Under the U.S. government’s nineteenth century Indian removal policies, more than ten thousand Eastern Indians, mostly Algonquians from the Great Lakes region, relocated in the 1830s and 1840s beyond the western border of Missouri to what today is the state of Kansas. With them went a number of mixed-race people – the métis, who were born of the fur trade and the interracial unions that it spawned. This dissertation focuses on métis among one emigrant group, the Potawatomi, who removed to a reservation in Kansas that sat directly in the path of the great overland migration to Oregon and California.
