I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all players, officials and supporters of Marske and I hope they enjoy their afternoon with us. This is the second game in a week between our two sides and while we would be delighted to repeat last Saturday’s league result, I am s ure that Marske will have other ideas. There will certainly be no room for complacency today as we battle for a place in the First Qualifying Round of the most famous of all cup competitions. Today’s winners face a trip to Evo-Stik Premier Division side Kendal in two weeks time and the chance to test themselves against higher status opposition. Should today’s game end in a draw, the replay will take place Marske at next Tuesday evening. However, if there is a winner today, we will be making the much shorter journey across the Tyne on Tuesday to face South Shields in a Northern League game, assuming that The Mariners do not have a Cup replay. Our next game here at Hillheads will be on Tuesday 13th September when Shildon are the visitors. Attendances continue to rise at Hillheads and so far this se ason, gates have been close to 500, making us one of the best supported non league teams in the region. To those of you visiting Hillheads for the first time today we offer a warm welcome and hope you enjoy the day. We look forward to seeing you again soon. It was good to hear that our former striker Christie Elliott scored again for Partick Thistle on Saturday. He got the winner against Queen of the South, his second goal in his two games since joining the Scottish First Division side. Tomorrow the Club is holding a family fun day at Hillheads, to which all supporters and friends are very welcome. The entertainment begins at midday. Paul McIlduff Chairman HOWAY THE BAY! With regular WHITLEY BAY 4 penalty taker Lee Kerr on the bench, Robbie Dale stepped up to take the kick but struck the ball too close to the MARSKE UNITED 0 keeper, who blocked the shot. However, Paul Chow was quick to react as the ball ran loose and he calmly side Saturday 27th August stepped McDonald before putting the ball into the net for what was his first goal of the season. Whitley stepped up a gear after this success and four minutes later only a fine fingertip save by McDonald kept out a powerful shot from Robinson. From the resultant corner, Brian Smith head ed over the bar. Just a minute before half time, Whitley doubled their lead when Dale’s accurate crossfield pass picked out Paul Chow near the by line on the right of goal. Chow headed the ball back across goal where both Smith and Scroggins attempted but failed to make proper contact and with the keeper off balance, Phil Bell’s mis-hit shot in front of goal found the back of the net. While Whitley’s first half performance may not have merited a two goal advantage, it had the effect of leaving Paul Chow challenges the Marske keeper for a high ball Marske deflated and the second half saw Whitley in complete control. Two minutes before the hour mark, Bells’ glancing header from Ormston’s cross made it 3-0 and Whitley enjoyed a comfortable win over newly promoted two minutes later, McFarlane’s throw in on the left was Marske with two goals each from Paul Chow and Phil Bell played on to Chow who rifled home a great 20 yard shot and moved up to second place in the table. which gave McDonald no chance. In the early season and also for the reserves. exchanges, Whitley were first to get an effort on target, Robbie Dale frustrated the visitor s defence with some Ormston’s header from Robbie Dale’s cross being clever close control of the ball followed by pin point comfortably held by McDonald. Damon Robson’s cross was passes, one of which led to a shot from Scroggins which just too high for Paul Chow while at the other end, cleared the bar. Marske’s first attempt on goal came in the sixth minute but the ball went just wide. Robinson was looking lively for Whitley and after providing a ball for Dale which nearly brought the breakthrough, he tried a shot from 20 yards which was only inches wide of the upright with McDonald beaten. Midway through the half, Karl Charlton had Marske’s best chance, heading over the bar from a right wing cross. Meanwhile Robinson and McFarlane both kept up the pressure on the visitors’ goal and in the 32nd minute, Robinson surged into the penalty area before going to ground under a challenge from a defender.
