Padilla, PhD Frank Scheide, PhD Committee Member Committee Member Abstract This project analyzes adaptation in the Hindi film industry and how the concepts of gender and identity have changed from the original text to the contemporary adaptation. The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films. -
The Hindu, the Muslim, and the Border In
THE HINDU, THE MUSLIM, AND THE BORDER IN NATIONALIST SOUTH ASIAN CINEMA Vinay Lal University of California, Los Angeles Abstract There is but no question that we can speak about the emergence of the (usually Pakistani or Muslim) ‘terrorist’ figure in many Bollywood films, and likewise there is the indisputable fact of the rise of Hindu nationalism in the political and public sphere. Indian cinema, however, may also be viewed in the backdrop of political developments in Pakistan, where the project of Islamicization can be dated to least the late 1970s and where the turn to a Wahhabi-inspired version of Islam is unmistakable. I argue that the recent history of Pa- kistan must be seen as instigated by a disavowal of the country’s Indic self, and similarly I suggest that scholarly and popular studies of the ‘representation’ of the Muslim in “Bol- lywood” rather too easily assume that such a figure is always the product of caricature and stereotyping. But the border between Pakistan and India, between the self and the other, and the Hindu and the Muslim is rather more porous than we have imagined, and I close with hints at what it means to both retain and subvert the border. -

Nepotism in Film Industry: an Unending Debate
ISSN 2455-4782 NEPOTISM IN FILM INDUSTRY: AN UNENDING DEBATE Authored by: Dr. Deepti Kohli * * Associate Professor, Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, Delhi ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Nepotism is not a new issue in the society. It revives itself with the growth of film industry. It can be seen in politics as well. In the film industry it can be seen at the level of production, distribution, marketing etc. The disadvantage of it is that, it eliminates the talent and hard work from the work culture. It removes incentives for creativity. It has been seen as a boon for the star kids and bane for the struggling artists. Recently the death of the 34 year old actor has ignited the debate of nepotism through the social media activists. The paper attempts to study as to how far film industry has been the victim of nepotism and the loss suffered due to it. The paper also analyses the possible legal solutions to the problem of nepotism. Key words- Nepotism, film industry, star kids, film collection, production house, directors 14 | P a g e JOURNAL ON CONTEMPORARY ISSUES OF LAW [JCIL] VOLUME 6 ISSUE 6 ISSN 2455-4782 INTRODUCTION When professional decisions are hampered on the basis of personal relationships, nepotism can be said to have begun. The strong argument in its support is that when families run businesses, as a tradition, they want to carry it from generations to generations, and keep the profit in home which can be inherited by the family members alone. The term nepotism has been derived from Italian word nepotismo, which is based on Latin root nepos, which means nephew.1 There are various areas where nepotism exists, however, in this paper the nepotism is discussed in the light of film industry, commonly known as ‘Bollywood’. -

Approval Name: Maliha Siddiqi Degree: Master of Arts Title: “The valley of desire”: A study of Kashmir as portrayed through popular Indian cinema Zoë Druick Senior Supervisor Professor Katherine Reilly Program director Associate Professor Date Defended/Approved: 31st August 2020 ii Abstract Indian-administered Kashmir has been a conflicted territory since 1947. This paper studies the representation of Kashmir and its civilian population in popular Hindi films. As Bollywood has an immensely dedicated audience, both in India as well as globally, the sensitive issues surrounding Kashmir make for extremely sought-after and therefore potentially influential content in films. I argue that these films reflect a sharp bias and a myopic approach towards showcasing the area and its civilian population. This paper employs the use of film analysis and critical discourse analysis to examine seven films — Mission Kashmir (2000), Yahaan (2005),Fanaa (2006), I am (2010), Lamhaa (2010), Haider (2014) and Hamid (2018) — to support the argument. The results show that all the films except Haider and Hamid misrepresent or underrepresent the realities of Kashmir. -
