State institutions and cultural activists uphold epics linked to the pre-colonial era as the most culturally authentic, ancient, and distinctive form of Filipino literature. These “epics” originated as oral traditions performed by culturally diverse groups. Before they could be read, they had to be written down and translated into, first, the colonial language of Spanish, and later, the national languages of English and Filipino. Beginning from the earliest Spanish colonial times, I examine the longer history of writing about, describing, summarizing, and beginning in the late nineteenth century, transcribing the diverse sorts of oral narratives that only in the twentieth century came to be called epics. -

Mogwai – As the Love Continues
„As The Love Continues“ beginnt in Form von ‚To The Bin My Friend, Tonight We Vacate Earth‘ mit sehr dezenten Tönen, sanftem Schlagzeugspiel und sparsamen Melodien. Ganz in Bandtradition legen die Schotten im Laufe dieses Stücks Soundschicht um Soundschicht übereinander, bevor der Einsatz verzerrter Gitarren und die so Mogwai-typische Laut-Leise- Dynamik das Stück in einer voluminösen, aber dennoch organischen Wall of Sound zu Ende gehen lassen. Das anschließende ‚Here We, Here We, Here We Go Forever‘ wird durch piepende Synthesizer-Sounds eingeleitet, welche stilistisch an die schottischen Landsleute vonBoards of Canada denken lassen. Die Melodieführung des Stückes ist so eingängig wie zuletzt vielleicht auf dem 2001er Album „Rock Action“, klingt jedoch so, als würden die Instrumente von einem Roboter gespielt werden. -

ISSN 1653-2244 INSTITUTIONEN FÖR KULTURANTROPOLOGI OCH ETNOLOGI DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY AND ETHNOLOGY You can’t eat the sweet with the paper on An anthropological study of perceptions of HIV and HIV prevention among Xhosa youth in Cape Town, South Africa By Kajsa Yllequist 2018 MASTERUPPSATSER I KULTURANTROPOLOGI Nr 77 Abstract South Africa has the biggest HIV epidemic in the world and the HIV rates among youth are especially alarming. In 2016 there were 110 000 new cases of HIV among 15 to 24-year-olds1. The aim of this study is to describe and analyse perceptions of HIV and HIV prevention among Xhosa youth in the township of Langa, Cape Town. In order to study this, I focus on the organisation loveLife and their employed peer educators called groundBREAKERs (gBs). To gain knowledge on what fuels the HIV epidemic in this setting I will examine their thoughts and notions of HIV/AIDS, sexuality and sexual behaviour in relation to the information that is available to them. Examining the socio-cultural context of HIV/AIDS is important to understand the spread and why HIV is not declining sufficiently in response to HIV preventative efforts. This thesis is based on ten weeks of fieldwork at loveLife’s Y-Centre in Langa. The material was gathered through semi-structured interviews and participant observation. To analyse the drivers for the spread of HIV among Xhosa youth an analytical tool of gender roles, with a main focus on masculinity, has been utilized. 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit". -

By Anthony Yung ArtReview Asia caught up with Lee Kit in Venice, where he was monitoring the reconstruction of a building – soon to be the site of the Hong Kong Pavilion – opposite the entrance of the Arsenale. His solo exhibition You (you). will open here in less than two months. During the past year, Lee’s experiences of participating in art fairs and exhibitions all over the world – from solo shows in Beijing, Hong Kong, Palermo and Tapei, to group shows at the New Museum and MoMA in New York – have transformed his work methods and expanded the dimensions of his creative practice. Oddly enough, shortly before being invited to represent Hong Kong at the Venice Biennale, he moved to Taipei; so we decided, under the circumstances, that the best approach would be to invite one of his old Hong Kong friends to catch up with him on recent events. Lee’s artistic journey began when he started by painting checked patterns onto cloths, then using these ‘paintings’ in his daily life as tablecloths, curtains or picnic sheets. He washed the cloths, he wiped his mouth with them and in 2004 he used one of them as a ‘flag’ in Hong Kong’s annual 1 July protests (held each year since the 1997 handover, in recent years to symbolise a demand for general freedoms).
