KOMAZAWA UNIVERSITY “KOMSTUDY” Japanese Language and Culture Program: 22nd Nov.2019 - 15th Dec. 2019 TOKYO, JAPAN History & Outline A small castle town in the 16th century, “Edo” became Japan’s political center when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his feudal government there. With the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the Japanese imperial family moved from Kyoto, Edo was renamed “Tokyo”. Now a fascinating cosmopolitan city, Tokyo is the world's most populous metropolitan area, and is the center of every mortal thing in Japan. Tokyo offers to its visitors countless shopping and dining places, and also stimulates their adventurous spirits with many choices of entertainment and tourist sites. Tokyo is covered by a dense network of train, subway and bus lines which enables visitors moving place to place so easily and swiftly. This traffic convenience is one of the reasons why Tokyo is so exciting and favored by many visitors. KOMAZAWA UNIVERSITY History & Outline Komazawa University is the biggest of all sixty Buddhist universities in Japan, having seven faculties and various research institutes with 16,000 students. Its history started at the end of the 16th century, when a seminary was established to be the center of learning for the young monks of the Soto denomination, one of the two main Zen Buddhist traditions in Japan. Komazawa University is located near the center of Tokyo, being only 6 km southwest of Shibuya. The campus is very quiet and peaceful, surrounded by trees and other plant life existing in Komazawa Olympic Park located next to the university. KOMSTUDY Outline KOMSTUDY is designed for university students who wish to improve their Japanese Language skills in a Japanese-speaking environment, and also acquire knowledge and discoveries of Japanese culture and lifestyles directly from own experience while living and studying in Japan. Living with a family from a different background will give students a chance to broaden their mind, and then leads to a further exploration. KOMSTUDY also offers students a great opportunity to make Japanese friends. Students can learn practical Japanese and Japanese culture of younger generation by spending time with students from Komazawa University. KOMSTUDY is very popular among our students who are very eager to support the KOMSTUDY participants. JAPANESE CLASS & ACTIVITIES Course Description There are two level-classified courses offered, one is for beginners who need to have a working knowledge of hiragana and katakana, and the other is for intermediate. Both courses are designed to help students developing all four macro-skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing but the most of classroom activities focus mainly on developing communication skills and the student’s confidence in speaking Japanese. Japanese class is scheduled in the morning through Monday to Friday. Total of 65 program hours will provide students many opportunities to practice speaking Japanese and to learn about Japanese culture and customs. Please see next page for the time schedule of the whole program. Each class is a small sized class with 5-10 students. Students will be placed in either class by their expressed preference on the application; however the placement is subject to change depending on the result of the placement test which takes place upon arrival. End of Program HOME STAY Outline We encourage students not only to improve their Japanese language skills, but also to enjoy achieving cross-cultural understanding by spending time with people from different cultures. All of our host families are screened to ensure that the families meet our standards of a comfortable living environment, and speak Japanese as their primary language. Transport to/from Komazawa University normally takes 30-60 minutes by using train or bus. Some families live in a walking distance to campus. A single room with a bed or Japanese futon and a suitable environment for studying is provided for each student. Host families enjoy serving home-made meals to students during the stay. Breakfast and dinner on weekdays and breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekends are provided. Students’ participation at meal will be greatly beneficial to their experience. Homestay Placement Students’ preferences and special health or mental health conditions/needs (if any) must be mentioned on their homestay application. We make every effort to match students with families according to the student’s expressed preference on the homestay application; however, we do not guarantee that families meet all of the student’s preferences. Students must commit to the placement for the entire program. Relocation of the homestay family will not be accepted except by requests based on a clear indication that the family is not able to meet the homestay standards Arrival and Departure Accommodation on Nov. 22nd and Dec. 14th Accommodation at hotel near T-CAT, the bus terminal from Narita Airport and Haneda Airport, will be arranged for the participants on the dates indicated above. The details of the hotel will be informed to each participant after acceptance of the program. The transport to the hotel on Nov. 22nd is self-arranged. Please check https://www.limousinebus.co.jp/en/ for airport bus. A chartered bus to/from Komazawa University on the first and the last day of the program will be arranged by Komazawa University. EXPENSES Expenses Included in Program Fee (¥200,000 ) 1. Japanese lessons (including teaching materials) 2. Cultural lectures and activities, Excursions 3. Homestay (20 nights) and Accommodation at hotel (3 nights) 4. Transportation from hotel to Komazawa campus/ from Komazawa campus to hotel *All program fees must be paid directly to Komazawa University by September 30th 2019. Expenses Excluded in Program Fee 1. Round trip travel expenses to Japan 2. Round trip transportation fees from/to homestay to University 3. Lunch (¥300~¥500/day at cafeteria) 4. Spending money for private use 5. Medical expenses and overseas travel insurance Overseas Travel Insurance During the program, students may use the Health Center on campus for minor illness and injuries, but they are responsible for all medical expenses charged at hospital outside campus. Students are required to have adequate overseas travel insurance to enroll in KOMSTUDY. A scanned data of the certificate which shows the policy number and details of your insurance must be sent by email before the program begins. Application Procedures Condition of Participation Participants have to apply to their home university (through the short term application process) in the first instance. Participants must be 17 and older, and also must be a university student in Australia. Required Documents 1. Program Application Form (photo attached) 2. Written Oath for Indemnity Clause 3. Copy of biographical data page of passport 4. Face photo data *Students should be aware of their home university’s eligibility criteria. *Applications open on July 1st 2019, and close on August 31st 2019. *Application documents will be updated on Komazawa University’s website in late June. Cancellation and Refund Policy 1. In case of cancellation, a written notification must be sent to Komazawa University. 2. Any student who cancels an enrollment in KOMSTUDY will not receive any refunds after the payment. 3. Komazawa University has the right to cancel or defer the course, and change its timetables.
