Dear Friends Spray Cheryl Some mes clergy are seized by the th century spirit of John Wesley, the Church of parish Vicar who founded Methodism, with the thought ‘The world is my parish!’. In other words, he decided that his ‘calling’ extended beyond the boundaries of his parishes to embrace issues of wider concern. This happened to me during the non-violent demonstra ons against Climate Chaos organised in London by ‘Ex nc on Rebellion’. I last a ended a rally in London when I was a student, and realised then how diff erent the actual experience could be from the impression given by television cameras Jonathan looked the part and media reports. as the Vicar of Cerne So I went, wearing a clerical suit and collar, to see Abbas, λσλσ, in the Village and to hear and to talk to people. I spoke to a police Sale re-enactment. offi cer who is part of a specially-trained task force based in the provincial forces who can be summoned na onally in such situa ons. He was glad of the over me but missed his kids. I listened to a distressed barrister who was late for her St Thomas’ hospital appointment because she could not drive over the blocked Westminster Bridge. She wanted me to report this consequence to the ‘authori es’ and sort it out. I spoke to a grandmother who had glued herself to the road and now the muscle cramps were se ng in. It hurts to demonstrate non-violently when your joints are old and s ff , but she was there for her grandchildren’s futures. The campaigners o en asked ‘Are you with us?’ They were red, cold and slightly forlorn. They were ordinary people doing this extraordinary thing; people from the provinces a bit lost in the city. I replied to one on a grey Tuesday morning: ‘Be encouraged, death stalks the Earth and you are Conscious Life in rebellion.’ And he burst into tears. A crying violinist in Westminster Bridge looked up at my collar and said: ‘I was asking for God to help us and here you are!’ Extraordinary. They are under such strain, all of them. The police, the city workers trying to get about their business, the grandmothers and the odd ‘crusty’ student. I was impressed by their sense of common humanity and refusal to demonise each other. As I walked to the sta on to return, I passed four ac vists glued to a bollard surrounded by police and gave the assembly a cheery ‘Good morning everyone!’ and they all looked up, smiled and said ‘Good Morning’ back! Caught them by surprise! 5 6 Cerne Abbas NEWS St Mary’s Church DORCHESTER FOOD BANK There will be a village collec on for the Food Bank at Dorford Bap st Church during November. Ques ons were asked, such as: What can we do, who would do it, who would want to help and who would take part, how much would it cost? Thanks to a Na onal Lo ery grant, there was an Exhibi on over two weeks, a jazz night, talks on how the project evolved, and on social history, and a re-enactment of the auc on. Topping it all was a village concert, followed the next day by the Harvest Lunch. All of these events took place in the church. Through the two weeks there were stewards, tea makers, soloists, musicians, actors, conductors, announcers, presenters, and audiences. The pubs and shops were decorated with fl ags fl ying and banners hanging. There were constant smiles, and the majority of the village dressed in period costume. I’m so glad I live here! On the expedi on, we worked closely with the people of Costa Rica who taught and guided us through the four camps where we stayed. Each camp has separate goals: environment, community, sea life and a wildlife refuge. The fi rst, in the Osa Peninsula, focuses on reforesta on and the reintegra on of primates, amphibians, and migratory birds. The next is more community-orientated; and we worked

Lydden Vale Gardening Club CONTACT Viviane Bernhard , [email protected]) On Wednesday th November we welcome Somerset-based Katherine Crouch, who has been designing gardens all over the South West since winning the BBC Gardener of the Year compe on in . She also won BBC Gardener of the Decade in and a Gold medal at the Chelsea Flower show. We can therefore be certain that she knows a lot about the plants which thrive in our region’s gardens and look forward to her talk on “My Favourite Perennials: Plants that should be be er known”. All are welcome to join us! Thanks, lett ers and other SNIPPETS THE OBSERVANT DOG WALKER I seem to be wri ng this piece on wet windy days regularly, the windows streaming with rain and the wind howling through the trees, when going out for a dog walk is not what we want to be doing. I am OK today... no dog to walk! However, yesterday, I did go out to collect up signs I had put up to encourage cleanliness of the green path by the allotments and it seems to have worked. Please let’s keep it that way, as well as all other local paths and green spaces including the longer grass on water meadows. Autumn colours are beginning to deepen and I fi nd November is o en be er than October, so let’s hope the sun appears before the wind takes all the leaves off the trees. Minterne Gardens has only a hint of the oranges and reds as yet; the best colour I found was on a tree down the lane beside the church in Minterne, where you can pick up fresh eggs. It was ablaze! Let’s hope there is more to come especially if the Beevor beeches do their best show. We shall see. J T OLD AND QUIET: URGENT NEED TO SUPPORT OLDER DORSET PEOPLE IN CRISIS There is a growing number of older people in Dorset who are hi ng hard mes and their lives spiralling out of control. Far too many are afraid to ask for help un l it is too late and so they end up in court. Some are receiving short custodial sentences of a few months only to face a worsening situa on when they leave prison, including no accommoda on or clothing of their own. Restore Support 30 31 Network is a small registered charity which is urgently reques ng warm clothing (for men and women) in good condi on with winter approaching. A dona on of would also help them put together a toiletry bag and purchase undergarments. Please contact Caroline Hatlem Olsen () or Stuart Ware (, , or [email protected]) if you can help. A CAUTIONARY TALE A local man in his late s who lives alone received a knock at his door one a ernoon. Parked outside was a white van and two males in their late s who off ered to clean out his gu ers for . As it happened the man’s gu ers had been overfl owing and he saw this as an opportunity to get them cleaned. Having agreed to it the tradesmen went into the rear garden to start work. Shortly, there was a second knock at the door and the householder found two police offi cers in uniform outside who told him they had seen the men pull over and knock on the door, and what did they want. The householder told them and the offi cers then asked if they could talk to the men, which they duly did. The police offi cers then stepped away and spoke into their radios. They returned to the house and told the householder that they had made some enquiries and were sa sfi ed with the situa on but that he ought to be more cau ous in the future regarding traders who knocked on his door off ering to do work. The tradesmen had issued no paperwork. Had the amount charged been over then they would have been legally required to give paperwork including an address and telephone number, a descrip on of the goods and cancella on rights. If you pay or agree to pay over for any services or goods that are sold to you in your home, then you have days to cancel the agreement. If you cancel, any monies that you have paid should be returned to you. The trader must give you a wri en no ce of your cancella on rights when you agree the contract. If the trader doesn’t provide you with this informa on, they commit a criminal off ence. You can show you do not want to receive visits from cold-calling doorstep traders by displaying a ‘We do not deal with uninvited doorstep traders’ door s cker available from libraries across Dorset or by calling the Ci zens Advice consumer helpline on . This is also the number to call if you would like consumer advice, or to report something to Trading Standards.
