Hanks1 Received: 7 December 2018 /Revised: 16 February 2019 /Accepted: 5 April 2019 /Published online: 16 April 2019 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2019 Abstract Males of several species in the large cerambycid beetle subfamily Lamiine, native to South and North America, are known to produce aggregation-sex pheromones composed of three related structures: the sesquiterpene catabolic product geranylacetone, its corresponding alcohol (known as fuscumol), and the acetate ester of the alcohol (fuscumol acetate). Here, we show that males of two lamiine species native to the eastern USA, Astylopsis macula (Say) and Leptostylus transversus (Gyllenhal) (both tribe Acanthocinini), produce pheromones composed of the structurally related (S)-6-methylhept-5-en-2-ol ([S]-sulcatol). Males of both species also produced 6-methylhept-5-en-2-one (sulcatone), and males of A. macula produced trace amounts of (R)- fuscumol acetate. Field experiments demonstrated that both species were attracted by (S)-sulcatol. Sulcatone was not attractive as a single component, nor did it influence attraction of A. macula to (S)-sulcatol, while its effect on L. transversus was unclear. Data from the field experiments, and a separate experiment using traps fitted with a timer mechanism that rotated trap jars, revealed that the two species overlap only slightly in both seasonal and daily flight period, thus minimizing interspecific attraction. -

Bemisia tabaci’s broad host range and its multivoltine development overwhelmed the then-current management practices and the ability of native natural enemies to limit whitefly populations. In response, a multi-agency national research and action plan was developed with par- ticipation by U.S. Department of Agriculture agencies (Agricultural Research Service, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, and Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service), State departments of agriculture, universities, and private industry (Faust, 1992; Henneberry et al., 1998). Biological control was a major component of the plan. By its rarity in the Catalan fauna, the mirid Deraeocoris (D.) schach (Fabricius, 1781) and the pentatomid Sciocoris (N.) maculatus Fieber, 1851 are interesting species. Plus being rare species, the mirid Macrotylus (A.) solitarius (Meyer-Dür, 1843) and the pentatomid Sciocoris (S.) umbrinus (Wolff, 1804) are new records for the Natural Park. The mirids Alloetomus germanicus Wagner, 1939 and Amblytylus brevicollis Fieber, 1858, and the pentatomid Eysarcoris aeneus (Scopoli, 1763) are new contributions for the Park checklist. The Heteropteran richness of Can Coll suggests them as study group for the environmental education goals of this School of Nature. The stilt bugs (Heteroptera, Berytidae) of Norway. Norwegian Journal of Entomology 58, 27–32. We here present confirmed records of the six species of stilt bugs (Berytidae) occurring in Norway. Berytinus clavipes (Fabricius, 1775) is reported for the first time from Norway. Several new county records for the other species of Berytidae are also presented. All species are illustrated with pictures of specimens from Norway. The reported records of Berytinus affinis in Warloe (1925) have for a long time led to confusion about which species of Berytinus Kirkaldy, 1900 being present in Norway. Here, we show that these specimens actually belong to the common B. minor (Herrich-Schaeffer, 1835). We conclude that it is not likely that more than these six species of Berytidae are to be found in Norway in the future. Key words: Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Berytidae, Norway. Keywords: Biological Control, Aphelinidae, Aleyrodidae, Encarsia, parasite. 2 Various species of whiteflies (Aleyrodidae) are among the most serious of agricultural pests, causing millions of dollars of damage each year to various crops. In 1991, one species (Bemisia argentfolii Bellows and Perring) caused damage in excess of $500 million in the U.S. alone (Perring, et al., 1993). Among the most common and effective parasitoids of whiteflies are parasitic wasps in the genus Encarsia (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae). These tiny wasps are primary parasites of whitefly species as well as species of scale insects (Coccoidea). Worldwide, over 170 Encarsia species have been described (Hayat, 1989). In spite of their abundance and usefulness, there are still very few well illustrated keys and diagnoses, and in North America, no recent identification aids exist. Because of their small size, identification of the various species is difficult under even the best of circumstances and requires the intervention of a specialist in aphelinid taxonomy. In this paper, we treat the 27 species of Encarsia known to occur in North America that are parasitic on whiteflies. -

MacRae Monsanto Company 700 Chesterfield Parkway West Chesterfield, Missouri 63017 ABSTRACT Eighty species in 60 genera of cerambycid beetles were documented during a 17-year field survey of a national park (George Washington Memorial Parkway) that spans parts of Fairfax County, Virginia and Montgomery County, Maryland. Twelve species are documented for the first time from Virginia. The study increases the number of longhorned beetles known from the Potomac River Gorge to 101 species. Malaise traps and hand picking (from vegetation or at building lights) were the most successful capture methods employed during the survey. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. Relative abundance is noted for each species based on the number of captures. Notes on plant foraging associations are noted for some species. Two species are considered adventive to North America.
