Press Release Alberta Ballet Hosts Guest Company Travis Wall's Press Release Alberta Ballet hosts guest company Travis Wall’s Shaping Sound, After The Curtain For Immediate Release Calgary AB – January 3, 2018 – Alberta Ballet is pleased to announce Travis Wall and his dance company Shaping Sound are back and ready to show off their sizzling piece of work, After The Curtain. After The Curtain is the second show for the eclectic dance company, conceived and choreographed by two-time Emmy Award- winner Travis Wall, and tells the story of a man fighting to find his creative voice after the death of his one true love. After The Curtain debuted in March of 2017 to fantastic reviews. Theater Jones in Dallas said, “It is overwhelmingly beautiful,” and The Los Angeles Times described it as “…a sinuous blend of athleticism, artistry and storytelling; sexy, soapy and spectacular.” The dance company Shaping Sound was established in Los Angeles in 2012 by Travis Wall and partners Nick Lazzarini, Teddy Forance and Kyle Robinson. The company is an evocative collaboration by diverse artists who describe themselves as ‘visual musicians,’ because their dance gives shape and form to sound. Travis Wall, Artistic Director, is the winner of the 2017 and 2015 Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography. He was the runner-up for So You Think You Can Dance Season Two, and is currently a resident choreographer for the national dance competition show. He is a seven-time Emmy nominated choreographer for his work on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and ‘Dancing with the Stars’. Travis Wall will dance the part of protagonist Vincent, and will be joined on stage by Lex Ishimoto, this year’s winner of FOX television’s So You Think You Can Dance. Lex returns to After The Curtain to perform the part of Jude, Vincent’s destructive alter-ego. Travis and Lex received great acclaim when they danced a combative number from After The Curtain on the So You Think You Can Dance season finale. For more information please visit www.shapingsoundco.com. Edmonton performances at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium run January 16 - 17, 2018. • Technique Vs. Talent: Narration, Participation, and So You Think You Can Dance Kirsten Pullen Texas A&M University
Technique Vs. Talent: Narration, Participation, and So You Think You Can Dance Kirsten Pullen Texas A&M University I wish I could dance. Like many, I took dance lessons as a child, and like many, I quit as soon as my mother would let me. But now, when I watch those old Gap khakis ads, or see Chris Brown’s videos, I get the urge to set up a ballet bar in the guest room and let my inner dancer twirl, leap, and glide. I suspect I’m not alone, and the success of the 19E Entertainment-produced, FOX-broadcast So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) seems to confirm my suspicions. There are several reasons behind SYTYCD’s success: it features lithe and lovely boys and girls gyrating against each other; the host, Cat Deeley, is gorgeous and charming; the audience votes for the winner. One reason, however, must be its narrative of talented but less technically proficient dancers triumphing through expressiveness, audience connection, and determination to master unfamiliar idioms. Lythgoe and the other judges appeal to viewers by suggesting that anyone, regardless of training and technique, can dance. In the words of producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe, SYTYCD is the search for America’s favorite dancer. I didn’t watch the first season, when Nick Lazzarini beat his friend Melody Lacayanga and the professionally experienced Blake McGrath for the title. Season 2 pit charismatic swing dancer Benji Schwimmer against twirling Travis Wall, a lyrical dancer who had trained for years; Benji won. Travis’ brother Danny Tidwell, a professional dancer who had studied at the Kirov Academy of Ballet and danced with the American Ballet Theatre was vanquished by Sabra Johnson, a former gymnast with just four years of formal dance training, in Season 3.

COMPILED BY : - GAUTAM SINGH STUDY MATERIAL – SPORTS 0 7830294949 Competitive Dance - Overview Competitive dance is a sport where dancers compete by performing dances in a number of permitted dance styles like tap, lyrical, jazz, acro, ballet, hip-hop, contemporary, modern etc. before a common group of judges. This is a very popular and widespread sport across the globe. The competitors compete by dancing and performing the style of their choice before a common group of judges. These judges give them points which provides rank to an individual performer or a team. A Brief History of Dance The period of third millennia BC is the period when dancing became widely popular. At that time, dance was one of the integral part of religious ceremonies among Egyptians. In many tomb paintings, it has been observed that Egyptian priests displayed musical instruments and dancers mimicked valuable events such as stories of gods and cosmic patterns of the movements of stars and sun. This tradition goes a long way to ancient Greece as they have dances in a very open platform (which led to the birth of the famous Greek theatre in 6th century BC). As periods passed by, even other religion incorporated dance as an essential part in their ceremonies. For example, Bharata Nathyam is the dance in Hinduism THANKS FOR READING – VISIT OUR WEBSITE www.educatererindia.com COMPILED BY : - GAUTAM SINGH STUDY MATERIAL – SPORTS 0 7830294949 which is still being performed today. Obviously, religious purpose was not the only reason for the creation of the dances. Common people used dance for the purpose to celebrate, entertain, seduce, and to induce the mood of hyperactive excitement.
