Like many, I took dance lessons as a child, and like many, I quit as soon as my mother would let me. But now, when I watch those old Gap khakis ads, or see Chris Brown’s videos, I get the urge to set up a ballet bar in the guest room and let my inner dancer twirl, leap, and glide. I suspect I’m not alone, and the success of the 19E Entertainment-produced, FOX-broadcast So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) seems to confirm my suspicions. There are several reasons behind SYTYCD’s success: it features lithe and lovely boys and girls gyrating against each other; the host, Cat Deeley, is gorgeous and charming; the audience votes for the winner. One reason, however, must be its narrative of talented but less technically proficient dancers triumphing through expressiveness, audience connection, and determination to master unfamiliar idioms. Lythgoe and the other judges appeal to viewers by suggesting that anyone, regardless of training and technique, can dance. In the words of producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe, SYTYCD is the search for America’s favorite dancer. I didn’t watch the first season, when Nick Lazzarini beat his friend Melody Lacayanga and the professionally experienced Blake McGrath for the title. Season 2 pit charismatic swing dancer Benji Schwimmer against twirling Travis Wall, a lyrical dancer who had trained for years; Benji won. Travis’ brother Danny Tidwell, a professional dancer who had studied at the Kirov Academy of Ballet and danced with the American Ballet Theatre was vanquished by Sabra Johnson, a former gymnast with just four years of formal dance training, in Season 3.

    Shooting Stars Dance Faculty Katie Freeman Dance Company Director & Choreographer, Ballet, Technique Katie began her dance training at the young age of 5. Early on, her focus was primarily ballet, attending summer workshops with the Atlanta Ballet and Houston Ballet. A highlight of her young dance career was touring for two holiday seasons with the Texas Ballet as the lead role, Clara, in the Nutcracker. After completing high school at age 17, she moved to Los Angeles to expand her horizons and training with a year long intensive scholarship program with the legendary Joe Tremaine. She studied under renowned master teachers such as Jackie Sleight, Doug Caldwell, Marguerite Derricks, Sallie Whalen, Michael Rooney and countless others. She assisted Joe Tremaine and taught the children's program at his professional studio in Hollywood for several years. Although she loved performing, her true calling was "in the studio"... as a teacher and choreographer! In March 2000, she followed her dreams and opened her first studio. She is proud to mentor young dancers and provide them the knowledge and support to pursue their dreams. Nicole Sanchez Dance Company Asst. This is a very popular and widespread sport across the globe. The competitors compete by dancing and performing the style of their choice before a common group of judges. These judges give them points which provides rank to an individual performer or a team. A Brief History of Dance The period of third millennia BC is the period when dancing became widely popular. At that time, dance was one of the integral part of religious ceremonies among Egyptians. In many tomb paintings, it has been observed that Egyptian priests displayed musical instruments and dancers mimicked valuable events such as stories of gods and cosmic patterns of the movements of stars and sun. This tradition goes a long way to ancient Greece as they have dances in a very open platform (which led to the birth of the famous Greek theatre in 6th century BC). As periods passed by, even other religion incorporated dance as an essential part in their ceremonies.
