The Pileus Cap Quick and Dirty Instructions for AEthelmearc 12th Night Saturnalia Meisterin Felicitas Fluβmüllnerin What is a pileus? The pileus (or pilos) was a Greek-style traveling hat given to Roman slaves upon receiving their freedom. It is associated with Castor and Pollux, representing the egg that they hatched from, just as the slave is becoming a new man in his freedom. During the Festival of Saturnalia, everyone was allowed to wear the pileus, including slaves, and there was a topsy-turvy role reversal for the duration of the festival. Odysseus wearing the pilos. Traditionally the pileus would be made of white wool to represent an egg shell, however, Saturnalia was a festival of color and celebration so feel free to use color and decorations, especially blue and gold (Saturnalia), red and white (AEthelmearc), and decorations of fertility and life: sun, moon, stars, herd animals, pinecones, nuts, and acorns. How to create a pileus: *I recommend felted wool or felt as the material. If made with a softer fabric, it will require a stiffener to stand tall. 1. Measure your head circumference loosely. 2. Crosby Garrett Helmet
A Roman Cavalry Helmet and the Phrygian Cap The Crosby Garrett helmet is well preserved example of a two-piece Roman cavalry helmet in the style of a Phrygia Cap, discovered close to Carlisle in 2010 by metal detectorists. Grampus Heritage who lead the EVEHD project have been involved with local Cumbrian volunteers in surveying the site of the discovery to see if there are any associated Roman discoveries yet to be made. With sponsorship from the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery and the Portable Antiquities Scheme, Grampus and a local team identified earthworks which seemed to be part of a substantial enclosure surrounded by ditches, within which buildings had once stood. The enclosure, which measures as much as 500 metres (1,600 ft) long on its southern side, combines both native British and Roman methods of fortification. A sunken area within the enclosure may possibly have served as a paddock for horses, while the evidence for the buildings is concentrated in the enclosure's northern portion. The remnants of Romano-British field systems in the surrounding area show that the area was under cultivation and animal remains found on the site indicate that the inhabitants also raised livestock, including sheep, goats and pigs. The presence of Roman pottery suggests that the inhabitants had adopted some elements of the Roman lifestyle, but their community may well have been there long before the Romans arrived. Archaeological evidence from the enclosure indicates that the site may have been first settled as far back as the Bronze Age, at least 1,000 years before the helmet was deposited. -

Key, 1586 Where Are We Again? This is the coast of modern day Belgium and The Netherlands, with the east coast of England included for scale. According to Fynes Moryson, an Englishman traveling through the area in the 1590s, the cities of Bruges and Ghent are in Flanders, the city of Antwerp belongs to the Dutchy of the Brabant, and the city of Amsterdam is in South Holland. However, he explains, Ghent and Bruges were the major trading centers in the early 1500s. Consequently, foreigners often refer to the entire area as "Flemish". Antwerp is approximately fifty miles from Bruges and a hundred miles from Amsterdam. Luckily, Antwerp's many genre paintings can give us a clue. The hair is put up in what is most likely a form of hair taping. In the example on the left, the braids might be simply wrapped around the head. However, the woman on the right has her braids too far back for that. They must be sewn or pinned on. The hair at the front is occasionally padded in rolls out over the temples, but is much more likely to remain close to the head. At the end of the 1600s, when the French and English often dressed the hair over the forehead, the ladies of the Netherlands continued to pull their hair back smoothly. -

It is, therefore, the object of the three counsels of perfection to free the soul from these hindrances. The soul may indeed be saved and heaven attained without following the counsels; but that end will be reached more easily and with greater certainty , if the counsels be accepted and the soul does not wholly confine herself to doing that which is definitely commanded. On the other hand, there are, no doubt, individual cases in which it may be actually necessary for a person , owing to particular circumstances, to follow one or more of the counsels, and one may easily conceive a case in which the adoption of the religious life might seem, humanly speaking, the only way in which a particular soul could be saved. Such cases, however, are always of an exceptional character. As there are three great hindrances to the higher life, so also the counsels are three, one to oppose each. The love of riches is opposed by the counsel of poverty; the pleasures of the flesh, even the lawful pleasures of holy matrimony, are excluded by the counsel of chastity; while the desire for worldly power and honour is met by the counsel of holy obedience. -

The image of black clothing, buckles and blunderbusses persist in the public mind. Fabrics In 17th Century England and in the Netherlands, there were two basic fabrics that were used for clothing, wool and linen. There was combination of wool and linen know has fustian corduroy that was also used, however finding this fabric today is almost impossible. Cotton while available was very rare and very expensive in the early 17th century. Colors We know that the Pilgrims wore a variety of colors in their clothing from probate records where the color of various clothing items were mentioned including the colors violet, blue, green.1,2 The color red was also listed. However, the reds that were used in the early 17th century were more of a brick red and a matter red which is a little more orange in nature than modern reds. -
