Meeting Called to Order at 7:03pm The meeting was called to order by Carol Ann Rogers. Executive Committee Reports • Vice President’s Report: Carol Ann Rogers o Vice President Rogers volunteered to write the “Letter from the President” for the August 2017 e-blast. The Letter will include thanks to Emily Harrold for her work as President of RHN, address the issue of the proposed medical cannabis dispensary on Polk Street at Filbert, and mention how this is a good time to join the RHN Board. o Vice President Rogers feels this is a good time to contact and meet with Supervisors Peskin and Farrel to get a sense of the issues that are most important during the second half of the year and their sense of whether a moratorium on medical cannabis dispensaries will be passed. Greg Polchow volunteered to accompany Carol Ann and Matthew Mansfield may also be able to join them for certain meetings. o Vice President Rogers reported that Judy has been meeting with DPW about the “South Patch” above the Broadway tunnel. -

SAN FRANCISCO PRESERVATION BULLETIN NO. 10 HISTORIC AND CONSERVATION DISTRICTS IN SAN FRANCISCO HISTORIC DISTRICTS -- INTRODUCTION Over the past thirty-five years, the City and County of San Francisco has designated eleven historic districts and six conservation districts and has recognized approximately 30 districts included in the California Register of Historical Resources, the National Register of Historic Places, or named as National Historic Landmark districts. These districts encompass nationally significant areas such as Civic Center and the Presidio National Park; the City’s first commercial center in Jackson Square; warehouse districts such as the Northeast Waterfront and the South End; and residential areas such as Telegraph Hill, Liberty Hill, Alamo Square, Bush Street-Cottage Row and Webster Street. In general, an historic district is a collection of resources (buildings, structures, sites or objects) that are historically, architecturally and/or culturally significant. As an ensemble, resources in an historic district are worthy of protection because of what they collectively tell us about the past. Often, a limited number of architectural styles and types are represented because an historic district is typically developed around a central theme or period of significance. For instance, the theme for a proposed historic district might be “Late 19th century Victorian housing, designed in the Queen Anne style.” Period of significance refers to the span of time during which significant events and activities occurred within the historic district. Events and associations with historic properties are finite; most resources within an historic district have a clearly definable period of significance. A high percentage of buildings located within districts contribute to the understanding of a neighborhood’s or area’s evolution and development through integrity. -

Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage. -

PRIVILEGED ATTORNEY-CLIENT COMMUNICATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SECOND AMENDED AND RESTATED LICENSE AGREEMENT (“SPIDER-MAN”) CREATIVE ISSUES This memo summarizes certain terms of the Second Amended and Restated License Agreement (“Spider-Man”) between SPE and Marvel, effective September 15, 2011 (the “Agreement”). 1. CHARACTERS AND OTHER CREATIVE ELEMENTS: a. Exclusive to SPE: . The “Spider-Man” character, “Peter Parker” and essentially all existing and future alternate versions, iterations, and alter egos of the “Spider- Man” character. All fictional characters, places structures, businesses, groups, or other entities or elements (collectively, “Creative Elements”) that are listed on the attached Schedule 6. All existing (as of 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that are “Primarily Associated With” Spider-Man but were “Inadvertently Omitted” from Schedule 6. The Agreement contains detailed definitions of these terms, but they basically conform to common-sense meanings. If SPE and Marvel cannot agree as to whether a character or other creative element is Primarily Associated With Spider-Man and/or were Inadvertently Omitted, the matter will be determined by expedited arbitration. All newly created (after 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that first appear in a work that is titled or branded with “Spider-Man” or in which “Spider-Man” is the main protagonist (but not including any team- up work featuring both Spider-Man and another major Marvel character that isn’t part of the Spider-Man Property). The origin story, secret identities, alter egos, powers, costumes, equipment, and other elements of, or associated with, Spider-Man and the other Creative Elements covered above. The story lines of individual Marvel comic books and other works in which Spider-Man or other characters granted to SPE appear, subject to Marvel confirming ownership. -

I recently read Valenti Angelo’s novel Golden Gate to my five-year-old son. The children’s book, published in 1939, tells the story of Nino, a young boy from Northern Italy who emigrates to California, passing briefly through Ellis Island and spending one night in “a lodging house run by a Neapolitan” somewhere on Bleecker Street (63). It’s a compelling story. For one, it’s unusual for any American novel, let alone one meant for kids, to emphasize the under-told story of everyday Italians in California. Second, it offers a series of details, couched in terms accessible to a child, about how Italian immigrants negotiated their entrance into US life, suggesting ways new immigrants sometimes ignored or refigured assimilationist pressures. Angelo (1897-1982) emigrated as a child from Massarosa (Tuscany) in 1905 and his family eventually settled in the town of Antioch, not far from San Francisco. He held a number of manual labor and factory jobs in and around Antioch, and later in San Francisco, until he landed a job at a photo-engraving shop in the city. It was there that he realized he had an artist’s mind. He wrote a number of children’s novels—Golden Gate is part of a series that feature Italian kids and take place both in the U.S. -

El llegat dels germans Grimm en el segle xxi: del paper a la pantalla Emili Samper Prunera Universitat Rovira i Virgili [email protected] Resum Les rondalles que els germans Grimm van recollir als Kinder- und Hausmärchen han traspassat la frontera del paper amb nombroses adaptacions literàries, cinema- togràfiques o televisives. La pel·lícula The brothers Grimm (2005), de Terry Gilli- am, i la primera temporada de la sèrie Grimm (2011-2012), de la cadena NBC, són dos mostres recents d’obres audiovisuals que han agafat les rondalles dels Grimm com a base per elaborar la seva ficció. En aquest article s’analitza el tractament de les rondalles que apareixen en totes dues obres (tenint en compte un precedent de 1962, The wonderful world of the Brothers Grimm), així com el rol que adopten els mateixos germans Grimm, que passen de creadors a convertir-se ells mateixos en personatges de ficció.
