    Metrolinx Board January 24, 2011 20 Bay Street, suite 600 Toronto, ON M5J 2W3 Dear Members of the Board, I am encouraged that the staff report found many advantages to electrification and, based on the findings of the study, indicated that Metrolinx should now develop and embrace an electrification transportation strategy. I strongly support the staff recommendation that, due to the more urban and densely populated neighbourhoods along the Georgetown corridor, Metrolinx declare it be made a priority line for electrification. While the proposed Tier Four diesel trains will be an improvement, and also noting that the staff report indicated that these trains can be converted to electric, I would ask that Metrolinx consider staging electrification with priority given to the stretch of the corridor from Weston to Union station for conversion, given the proximity of the tracks to neighbourhoods along this part of the corridor, and the concerns about pollution and noise deriving from the increased train traffic. I cannot emphasize enough, the concerns of many residents living along the rail corridor from Weston to Union, and that Metrolinx embark on an aggressive plan to complete electrification now that we have completed a significant study into this matter. I continue to believe that Metrolinx should be working towards a goal that see the electrification infrastructure in priority areas and along priority sections of the rail track completed by 2015. I appreciate the extra care Metrolinx has taken to work with the community through the electrification study and through infrastructure changes along the corridor that will be needed for the ARL and for the expansion of GO train service.

    RCCAO welcomes changes to Ontario’s cabinet Government by DCN News Services Jun 14, 2016 TORONTO —Premier Kathleen Wynne’s decision to make Bob Chiarelli the new minister of infrastructure as part of her cabinet shuffle is being applauded by the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario (RCCAO). "Minister Chiarelli has a long and distinguished career of public service at both the municipal and provincial orders of government," explained RCCAO executive director Andy Manahan in a statement. "Our coalition welcomes his return to the infrastructure portfolio and we look forward to working with him to promote Ontario's Infrastructure agenda." Chiarelli was energy minister for three years and also infrastructure minister from 2010 and 2013 under former premier Dalton McGuinty. With the province committing more than $137 billion over the next 10 years to roads, bridges, public transit, hospitals and schools, it's important to have proper planning and execution, the RCCAO stated. "RCCAO's recent independent research has examined megatrends and the future of infrastructure, how best to implement the proposed federal infrastructure bank, as well as the long-term economic benefits of Ontario's 10-year infrastructure plan," the RCCAO release noted. "Chiarelli was the architect of the 10-year plan and his return to the infrastructure portfolio will give him an opportunity to carry-on this important work." The Ministry of Infrastructure is now a stand-alone ministry that is responsible for the implementation of the province's $160 billion investment over 12 years (starting in 2014-15). "Key investments in transit, housing and public infrastructure are going to create jobs and ensure that Ontario remains a global destination for talent and investment," added Manahan.

To improve the representation of women on boards and in senior executive positions, Ontario is establishing a steering committee that will be co-chaired by the Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues, Tracy MacCharles, and by the Minister of Finance, Charles Sousa. The government has completed a review of the Credit Unions and Caisses Populaires Act, 1994. Following an extensive consultation process, Par liamentary Assistant Laura Albanese finalized the recommendations and delivered her report to the Minister of Finance in November. The Minister is currently reviewing the recommendations and will release the report soon. Strengthening Consumer and Investor Protection In April, the government announced the members of the expert committee reviewing the regulatory framework relating to financial advisory and financial planning services.

    TRANSPORTATION: Air-rail link community meetings set for February By CLARK KIM January 22, 2009 1:21 PM A revised proposal that would see an air-rail link connecting Union Station to Pearson airport through Weston was announced this week by the provincial agency responsible for improving the regional transportation network in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Metrolinx, a crown agency of Ontario, will be overseeing the project that also includes looking into expanding service on the Georgetown GO Transit line to Etobicoke and Brampton. But Metrolinx chair Rob MacIsaac assured that community input will be gathered before formally starting the environmental assessment process. "We want to hear from communities along the corridor," said MacIsaac. "Listening to the public will be fundamental to the success of this very important transportation project." Six such public consultations will be taking place starting Feb. 3 with two of those meetings to be held in the former city of York. The air-rail link, also referred to as Blue-22, has been a contentious issue in Weston with initial plans showing a high-speed train cutting Weston in half, closing some streets, and separating homes from nearby businesses. Local residents were also concerned about the increase in pollution as a result of having diesel-powered trains run through Weston without even making a stop in the community to pick up passengers. While Metrolinx stressed it is committed to public consultations, some preliminary information was unveiled Wednesday about what will be studied in the environmental assessment process. That includes reviewing proposed plans to upgrade the current GO Transit Weston stop to a full Weston GO station for both GO Transit and air-rail link trains.

Legal Aid Ontario states that it estimates it would require a budget of $33.6 million for IRL services in this fiscal year, but it has decided to allocate only $20.5 million. This will entail substantial cuts to needed services, to the quality of service, and significantly impact access to justice for refugees and immigrants. OCASI is the umbrella organization for immigrant and refugee-serving agencies in Ontario and has more than 200 member agencies across the province. Our member agencies depend on accessibility of representation by lawyers for the immigrants and refugees they serve. Representation of refugees is critically important, and cutting these services will put people at risk of arbitrary deportation to torture or death. Immigration law services offered through Legal Aid, such as representation in humanitarian applications, detention reviews and Immigration Appeal Board hearings are also critically important to protect the rights of immigrants and refugees, and to agencies helping to facilitate their settlement and integration. We support greater funding being given to Legal Aid Ontario for Immigration and Refugee Law services. The increase Legal Aid Ontario is seeking would be a minor expenditure, particularly relative to the impact of cutting service.

Normally I would have stayed out of this, chalking it up to how her campaign was going anyway- terribly- save and except for the fact that so many people contacted me for reaction and because I was upset, I obliged. Not because I care about the Liberal Party or its leader, but because of the sheer contempt her actions demonstrated to voters, volunteers and media.
