The New Democrat ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ members are Gilles Bisson, Sara Singh and Tom Rakocevic; Liberal MPP John Fraser will ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ take up the Independent spot. The committee was struck as an accountability measure because the PCs empowered themselves to amend or extend the emergency orders for up to the next two years, without requiring a vote or debate in the legislature. Bill 195, the enabling law, also requires the premier ​ ​ or a designate of his choosing to appear at the special committee to justify any changes to the sweeping emergency orders. Premier watch An RFP for the next leg of the Eglinton Crosstown tunnelling project will be issued today. Premier Doug Ford announced the move in Mississauga Tuesday alongside cabinet’s ​ ​ transportation overseers Caroline Mulroney and Kinga Surma. ​ ​ ​ ​ Three construction consortiums have already been shortlisted and are now able to present their detailed costing plans to Infrastructure Ontario.

So both get a non-alcoholic dinner for two at Jonathan’s, since it would be rude to call one back and say they lost when, in fact, they did- n’t. Winners were Alvin Thompson and Vicki MacNeil. Why the reversed picture? Well, since the photo was taken “from the street”, (a clue to the answer) the reflection in the window of the store across the road revealed backward lettering. The editor decided if it ran the way it was taken, it would “look wrong”, so the production department reversed the picture, making the lettering readable.

    Metrolinx Board January 24, 2011 20 Bay Street, suite 600 Toronto, ON M5J 2W3 Dear Members of the Board, I am encouraged that the staff report found many advantages to electrification and, based on the findings of the study, indicated that Metrolinx should now develop and embrace an electrification transportation strategy. I strongly support the staff recommendation that, due to the more urban and densely populated neighbourhoods along the Georgetown corridor, Metrolinx declare it be made a priority line for electrification. While the proposed Tier Four diesel trains will be an improvement, and also noting that the staff report indicated that these trains can be converted to electric, I would ask that Metrolinx consider staging electrification with priority given to the stretch of the corridor from Weston to Union station for conversion, given the proximity of the tracks to neighbourhoods along this part of the corridor, and the concerns about pollution and noise deriving from the increased train traffic. I cannot emphasize enough, the concerns of many residents living along the rail corridor from Weston to Union, and that Metrolinx embark on an aggressive plan to complete electrification now that we have completed a significant study into this matter. I continue to believe that Metrolinx should be working towards a goal that see the electrification infrastructure in priority areas and along priority sections of the rail track completed by 2015. I appreciate the extra care Metrolinx has taken to work with the community through the electrification study and through infrastructure changes along the corridor that will be needed for the ARL and for the expansion of GO train service.

Weathering the Snowstorm: Representing Northern Ontario Introduction: The Region of Northern Ontario At different times throughout Ontario’s history, both northern constituents and their Members of Provincial Parliament have debated whether the North is truly getting its fair share. Northern Ontario is different from the rest of the province in terms of its geography, economy, and political culture. Feelings of existing on the proverbial periphery of political decision making are compounded with its literal distance from the provincial legislature. Distance has left the North operating under a shroud of mystery to many, with periodic interest into the politics of the region by province wide-media. Northerners have expressed feelings of being ignored by their provincial legislature since confederation, which has led to a lingering sentiment of alienation. These differences separate Northern Ontario from the rest of the province, and set a distinctive political climate. The politics of Northern Ontario are unique, and have been acknowledged differently by Ontario Provincial Parliaments, most recently in a minority setting. This paper will explore the experience of Northern Members of Provincial Parliament in the Ontario legislature, and the unique trials and tribulations that come with representing the region.
