Queen’s Park Today – Daily Report August 20, 2020 Quotation of the day “They demanded — under duress — that we stop supporting Belinda [Karahalios]. We are appalled at this bullying and abuse of power. It is a direct attack on our democracy!” The now-derecognized PC riding association in Cambridge sends out flyers attacking Premier Doug Ford and the PC Party over alleged "intimidation tactics." Today at Queen’s Park Written by Sabrina Nanji On the schedule The house reconvenes on Monday, September 14. The roster for the Select Committee on Emergency Management Oversight — which will scrutinize ongoing extensions of emergency orders via Bill 195 — has been named. The majority-enjoying PC side will feature Bob Bailey, Christine Hogarth, Daryl Kramp, Robin Martin, Sam Oosterhoff, Lindsey Park and Effie Triantafilopoulos. The New Democrat members are Gilles Bisson, Sara Singh and Tom Rakocevic; Liberal MPP John Fraser will take up the Independent spot. The committee was struck as an accountability measure because the PCs empowered themselves to amend or extend the emergency orders for up to the next two years, without requiring a vote or debate in the legislature. Bill 195, the enabling law, also requires the premier or a designate of his choosing to appear at the special committee to justify any changes to the sweeping emergency orders. Premier watch An RFP for the next leg of the Eglinton Crosstown tunnelling project will be issued today. Premier Doug Ford announced the move in Mississauga Tuesday alongside cabinet’s transportation overseers Caroline Mulroney and Kinga Surma. Three construction consortiums have already been shortlisted and are now able to present their detailed costing plans to Infrastructure Ontario.

For more information or to register for the seminar contact Marianne Fedrigoni at 905-727-0514 or via e-mail at mariannefedrigoni@sympati- co.ca. Winners tied At exactly noon Friday, two of The Auroran’s telephone lines lit up. The editor answered one, the receptionist the other. Both callers identified last week’s front page picture contest as being “reversed” and both were assured they were the first caller, according to the rules set out. So both get a non-alcoholic dinner for two at Jonathan’s, since it would be rude to call one back and say they lost when, in fact, they did- n’t. Winners were Alvin Thompson and Vicki MacNeil. Why the reversed picture? Well, since the photo was taken “from the street”, (a clue to the answer) the reflection in the window of the store across the road revealed backward lettering. The editor decided if it ran the way it was taken, it would “look wrong”, so the production department reversed the picture, making the lettering readable.

Hon. David Orazietti Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services 16th Floor, George Drew Building 25 Grosvenor Street Toronto, ON M7A 1Y6 July 25, 2016 RE: End the Incarceration of Immigration Detainees in Provincial Prisons Dear David, First, let me extend on behalf of Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO), a warm welcome and congratulations on your recent appointment as the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services. We at RNAO look very much forward to working with you to build healthier communities in our province. To this end, we are asking to meet with you to discuss perspectives and collaboration. As the professional association representing registered nurses (RN), nurse practitioners (NP) and nursing students in Ontario, RNAO is a strong and consistent advocate for the need to improve health, health care, and human rights protection within our provincial correctional facilities.1 2 We have long been concerned with the criminalization of people with mental health and addiction challenges.3 Therefore, we urge you to end the ongoing incarceration of immigration detainees in provincial prisons, and prevent more needless deaths of immigration detainees in your care. The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) routinely transfers immigration detainees – refugee claimants, survivors of trauma, and other vulnerable non-citizens, including many with mental health challenges – to medium-maximum security provincial correctional facilities.4 Having a severe physical or mental illness or expressing thoughts

Metrolinx Board January 24, 2011 20 Bay Street, suite 600 Toronto, ON M5J 2W3 Dear Members of the Board, I am encouraged that the staff report found many advantages to electrification and, based on the findings of the study, indicated that Metrolinx should now develop and embrace an electrification transportation strategy. I strongly support the staff recommendation that, due to the more urban and densely populated neighbourhoods along the Georgetown corridor, Metrolinx declare it be made a priority line for electrification. While the proposed Tier Four diesel trains will be an improvement, and also noting that the staff report indicated that these trains can be converted to electric, I would ask that Metrolinx consider staging electrification with priority given to the stretch of the corridor from Weston to Union station for conversion, given the proximity of the tracks to neighbourhoods along this part of the corridor, and the concerns about pollution and noise deriving from the increased train traffic. I cannot emphasize enough, the concerns of many residents living along the rail corridor from Weston to Union, and that Metrolinx embark on an aggressive plan to complete electrification now that we have completed a significant study into this matter. I continue to believe that Metrolinx should be working towards a goal that see the electrification infrastructure in priority areas and along priority sections of the rail track completed by 2015. I appreciate the extra care Metrolinx has taken to work with the community through the electrification study and through infrastructure changes along the corridor that will be needed for the ARL and for the expansion of GO train service.

Their requests are apparently based on Draft Policies which have not been formally introduced or discussed in the house. These articles have been reported by media, but in subsequent communications from the provincial government in response to such articles, they have steadfastly reiterated their commitment to expanding access to natural gas in rural Ontario. With all due respect, it is unacceptable and frankly insulting that attempts are made by some to influence the Ontario Energy Board based on rumors and newspaper reports. Particularly without having or requesting input from others involved in the hearing who may have a different view on this important issue. Based on our understanding, and based on dealings with other arm’s length Boards appointed by the Province, it is a Board’s duty and obligation to act and consider matters before the Board. Not to act, or react or interfere with ongoing proceedings based on rumours or based on something that may or may not take place in the future is wrong.
