Amanda Feld/Erin Ramsauer Newport Beach & Company Amanda@Newportbeachandco.Com Erin@Newportbeachandco.Com 949.706.5306/949.467.2745 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA CONTACTS: Amanda Feld/Erin Ramsauer Newport Beach & Company [email protected] [email protected] 949.706.5306/949.467.2745 Leslie Mann and Mark McGrath Named Grand Marshals for the 106th Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade America’s longest running lighted Christmas boat parade in beautiful Newport Beach, California NEWPORT BEACH, CA (September 16, 2014) – Comedic actress Leslie Mann and Mark McGrath, actor, songwriter and lead singer for the band Sugar Ray have been named as the first ever Grand Marshals for the 106th Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade. Mann and McGrath have both called Newport Beach home since their childhood attending Corona del Mar High School and are looking forward to coming back to Newport Beach on opening night to take part in this historical and fun holiday event. The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade and Ring of Lights home decorating competition is Newport Beach's Christmas card to the world. The boat parade runs for five consecutive nights, beginning Wednesday, December 17 and ending Sunday, December 21, 2014. Each night the parade starts at Bay Island at 6:30 p.m. and finishes at the same site at approximately 9:00 p.m., completing its 14.7-mile route around Newport Harbor. The theme for the 2014 Christmas Boat Parade is “Deck the Hulls with Bows of Jolly”. “We are incredibly honored to have Leslie Mann and Mark McGrath as Grand Marshals for this year’s parade. It has been thrilling to watch both 1600 Newport Center Drive, Suite 120, Newport Beach, CA 92660 Tel: -800-94-COAST visitnewportbeach.com of their successful careers throughout the years and how wonderful to have them back in their hometown at the holidays. The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade embodies the spirit of generosity, kindness and a true passion and love for community akin to Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” says Newport Beach & Company President and CEO Gary Sherwin. Each year, many boat and home participants decorate with millions of lights and decorations, which helped Newport Beach earn the designation in 2011 as the “#2 Destination in the Country for Holiday Lights” by Yahoo Travel. Additionally, the Christmas Boat Parade has been hailed as "One of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation" by the New York Times. Serving, as the backdrop for the hundreds of lighted boats in the parade is the annual "Ring of Lights" contest. A spectacle all its own, beautifully decorated bayside homes and businesses surrounding the harbor go "all out" with their own holiday spirit, featuring everything from roof-top animated scenes to dancing Christmas trees. With its own judged categories and prizes awarded, the "Ring of Lights" has become as celebrated as the boat parade itself. The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade and Ring of Lights are organized by the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce. The organizing committees look forward each year to see how the boat owners and homeowners will decorate around the theme. Some boat owners in the past have spent over $50,000 to decorate their vessels for the event. With a significant positive financial impact on the city, especially to its restaurants, hotels and charters in terms of tourism, marketing and generating business during the holiday season, the Parade continues to be a highlight of the Newport Beach lifestyle. Leslie Mann is Hollywood’s reigning funny girl. Funny and gorgeous, Mann’s breakout role came opposite Jim Carey in The Cable Guy, which is where she met her now husband, writer/director/producer Judd 1600 Newport Center Drive, Suite 120, Newport Beach, CA 92660 Tel: -800-94-COAST visitnewportbeach.com Apatow. Since then she has topped the box office in hits like, This is 40, Knocked Up and The 40-Year Old Virgin. She has also lent her voice to animated films, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, ParaNorman, Rio, and Rio 2. Among her other feature films are George of the Jungle, Big Daddy, Orange County, 17 Again and The Change Up. Most recently Leslie starred opposite Cameron Diaz and Kate Upton in, The Other Woman. Mark McGrath began singing in 1988 and in 1994, his band Sugar Ray signed with Atlantic Records. Their first success came in 1997 with the song "Fly". Since then, Sugar Ray has had numerous hits spanning five albums including songs “Every Morning”, “Someday”, and “When It’s Over.” McGrath, also an actor is known for hosting shows like ‘Killer Karaoke’ and ‘Extra.’ He was most recently seen in the campy TV phenomenon “Sharknado 2: The Second One.” Presenting sponsors of the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade and Ring of Lights are the City of Newport Beach, Visit Newport Beach, Inc., Simple Green and Meguiar's. Celebrity News: Judd Apatow Feels Bad for Wife Because He’s a ‘Disgusting Man’ By Meghan Fitzgerald Judd Apatow, 45, writer, co-producer, and director of This is 40, said he sees himself in his characters Paul Rudd, and Leslie Mann. Apatow and Leslie Mann, a real life married couple know the dilemmas of marriage. Apatow talks with People, stating that he “Relate[s] to just being a disgusting man and feeling bad that my wife even has to be around.” Even after problems after a 16-year relationship, the couple remains in love with each other, and loves working together more than anything. What are some ways to bridge the gap between genders in your relationship? Cupid’s Advice: From the beginning of time, men and women have been looked at as two different people, not equals. This is present in relationships, the strong gap between men and women. It is commonly said that men make more money than women, that men are more responsible, that they’re the ‘man of the house.’ Problems and trouble loom from these accusations. Cupid has some advice on how to keep this out of a relationship: 1. Respect: With genders in a relationship, each person needs to respect the other. Even if the man makes more money than the women, he needs to respect that he does not have all the power. Money or power does not show that one is better than the other. Also, women need to respect that men try their best to balance work and their family. Although this may not always be the case, women have to be aware that their partner still loves them.

Man at His Best The Profile By ANNA PEELE Filmmaker, producer, and writer Judd Apatow asked if he could take a pass at his profile. We thought, What could go wrong? Instructions to meet the man who will lead me to Judd Apatow specify only that he can be found “under the rainbow,” which turns out to be a 30-ton 100-foot-high $1.6 million homage to The Wizard of Oz On the way, I make eye contact with a goat dressed as a unicorn. But the strangest thing about Sony Pictures Studios is the state of the of- fice occupied by Judd Apatow, pro- ducer of Anchorman and Girls, au- teur behind the filmsKnocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and arguably the man who is better than anyone but Lorne Michaels at making co- medians famous. Apatow’s work- place is barren, with lurid lighting and views only of nearby walls. He likes this barren office, though. He has a nicer one in Santa Monica, but it’s packed with the by-products of shaping the entertainment industry for three decades, and Apatow want- ed something unburdened. The new place, which would be totally generic without the whiteboard casually fes- tooned with names like “Louis C.K.” and “Chris Rock,” comes with a Net- flix deal that has Apatow produc- ing the upcoming Pee-wee Herman movie and two guaranteed seasons of Love, a new romantic sitcom, with writer and actor Paul Rust. Apatow has described himself as looking like “the next abusive alcoholic stepfather in Boyhood” But with his ’90s rock-critic outfit (unbuttoned plaid shirt over silk- screened T, jeans, and sneakers), Apatow is sloppily handsome.

  • Women in Comedy
WOMEN IN COMEDY BACKGROUND: MAKERS: Women In Comedy tracks the rise of women in the world of comedy, from the “dangerous” comedy of 70s sitcoms like Norman Lear’s Maude to the groundbreaking women of the 1980s American comedy club boom and building to today’s multifaceted landscape. Today, movies like Bridesmaids break box office records and the women of Saturday Night Live are often more famous than their male counterparts, but it didn’t start out that way. Early breakout female comics had to keep their jokes within the safe context of marriage, motherhood, and a man’s world. But they still found a way to be subversive. As Joan Rivers puts it, “I was furious about having to get married… It all comes out on stage. So that’s what I do onstage. I really tell them the truth.” Soon comedy became a vehicle for women to take on some of the most sensitive and controversial issues of the day. On television in the 1960s, entertainers like Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore illuminated the core issues of feminism with humor that was both sly and truthful. But it took a powerful male producer to bring the most provocative feminist characters onto the screen. Maude, who Lear introduced to audiences in 1971, was a feminist firebrand on her fourth husband, strong and independent with a razor sharp wit. “When Maude was on the air,” Lear tells us, “I used to get letters from the First Lady, Betty Ford…. And she always signed every letter ‘Maude’s #1 fan’.” When Maude chose to have an abortion at 47, religious groups protested, but the episode was watched by 65 million Americans.

I examine how shifting developments in economic, societal, cultural, and gender relations impacted the perception of cinematic masculinity. The men, more specifically white and heterosexual, in these films position themselves as victims and, as a result, turn to alternative outlets to ease their frustrations and anxieties. In order to broadly survey the genre of the past two decades, I focus on three consistently popular character tropes in Hollywood comedies: slackers, office workers, and bromantic friendships. All the male characters discussed throughout the thesis are plagued by their innermost anxieties and desires that compromise their gendered identities. However, these films resort to a regressive understanding of masculinity and functions within the dominant heteronormative structures. This thesis demonstrates how Hollywood comedies present a contradictory and multifaceted image of modern masculinity.
