Cupid has some advice on how to keep this out of a relationship: 1. Respect: With genders in a relationship, each person needs to respect the other. Even if the man makes more money than the women, he needs to respect that he does not have all the power. Money or power does not show that one is better than the other. Also, women need to respect that men try their best to balance work and their family. Although this may not always be the case, women have to be aware that their partner still loves them. -

Instructions to meet the man who will lead me to Judd Apatow specify only that he can be found “under the rainbow,” which turns out to be a 30-ton 100-foot-high $1.6 million homage to The Wizard of Oz� On the way, I make eye contact with a goat dressed as a unicorn. But the strangest thing about Sony Pictures Studios is the state of the of- fice occupied by Judd Apatow, pro- ducer of Anchorman and Girls, au- teur behind the filmsKnocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and arguably the man who is better than anyone but Lorne Michaels at making co- medians famous. Apatow’s work- place is barren, with lurid lighting and views only of nearby walls. He likes this barren office, though. He has a nicer one in Santa Monica, but it’s packed with the by-products of shaping the entertainment industry for three decades, and Apatow want- ed something unburdened. The new place, which would be totally generic without the whiteboard casually fes- tooned with names like “Louis C.K.” and “Chris Rock,” comes with a Net- flix deal that has Apatow produc- ing the upcoming Pee-wee Herman movie and two guaranteed seasons of Love, a new romantic sitcom, with writer and actor Paul Rust. Apatow has described himself as looking like “the next abusive alcoholic stepfather in Boyhood�” But with his ’90s rock-critic outfit (unbuttoned plaid shirt over silk- screened T, jeans, and sneakers), Apatow is sloppily handsome. -

WOMEN IN COMEDY BACKGROUND: MAKERS: Women In Comedy tracks the rise of women in the world of comedy, from the “dangerous” comedy of 70s sitcoms like Norman Lear’s Maude to the groundbreaking women of the 1980s American comedy club boom and building to today’s multifaceted landscape. Today, movies like Bridesmaids break box office records and the women of Saturday Night Live are often more famous than their male counterparts, but it didn’t start out that way. Early breakout female comics had to keep their jokes within the safe context of marriage, motherhood, and a man’s world. But they still found a way to be subversive. As Joan Rivers puts it, “I was furious about having to get married… It all comes out on stage. So that’s what I do onstage. I really tell them the truth.” Soon comedy became a vehicle for women to take on some of the most sensitive and controversial issues of the day. On television in the 1960s, entertainers like Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore illuminated the core issues of feminism with humor that was both sly and truthful. But it took a powerful male producer to bring the most provocative feminist characters onto the screen. Maude, who Lear introduced to audiences in 1971, was a feminist firebrand on her fourth husband, strong and independent with a razor sharp wit. “When Maude was on the air,” Lear tells us, “I used to get letters from the First Lady, Betty Ford…. And she always signed every letter ‘Maude’s #1 fan’.” When Maude chose to have an abortion at 47, religious groups protested, but the episode was watched by 65 million Americans. -

I examine how shifting developments in economic, societal, cultural, and gender relations impacted the perception of cinematic masculinity. The men, more specifically white and heterosexual, in these films position themselves as victims and, as a result, turn to alternative outlets to ease their frustrations and anxieties. In order to broadly survey the genre of the past two decades, I focus on three consistently popular character tropes in Hollywood comedies: slackers, office workers, and bromantic friendships. All the male characters discussed throughout the thesis are plagued by their innermost anxieties and desires that compromise their gendered identities. However, these films resort to a regressive understanding of masculinity and functions within the dominant heteronormative structures. This thesis demonstrates how Hollywood comedies present a contradictory and multifaceted image of modern masculinity. -
