This book has been previously translated into English, both in full and in part. The entire 1963 text was translated by R. William Rotsel (Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics, Ardis, 1973), but his version was seriously flawed and is now out of print. Chapter Five, section Two of the Rotsel translation was revised by Priscilla Meyer and Stephen Rudy as "The Hero's Monologic Discourse and Narrational Discourse in Dostoevsky's Early Novels" in their Dostoevsky & Gogo!: Texts and Criticism (Ardis, 1979). In addition, Richard Balthazar and I. R. Titunik rendered into English a portion of the 1929 text ("Tipy prozaicheskogo slova ") as "Discourse Typology in Prose," in Readings in Russian Poetics, ed. Ladislav Matejka and Krystyna Pomorska (The MIT Press, 1971). I would like to thank my fellow translators for their versions of this difficult text. While my solutions rarely co­ incide with theirs, they did make possible an occasional dialogue over particularly complex sentences and terms. This page intentionally left blank Note on the Apparatus This English-language edition of Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics offers three levels of explanatory apparatus: (1) Bakhtin's own foot­ notes, which are numbered, are reproduced at the end of each chap­ ter. (2) Translator's notes, which are lettered, appear at the bottom of the relevant page and cover such problems as critical or generic terminology, puns, untranslatable terms, and the occasional identifi­ cation of important literary contexts. (3) An asterisk (*) after a proper name or work indicates that biographical information or an explanatory note can be found in the "Glossary of Proper Names and Works" at the end of the volume. When Bakhtin quotes Dostoevsky, he does so from the following standard Soviet sources: For fictional and journalistic works: Sobranie sochinenii in 10 volumes (Moscow: Goslitizdat, 1956-58) [referred to in footnotes as SS] or Polnoe sobranie khudozhestvennykh proizedenii in 13 volumes, edited by B. V. Tomashevskii and K. I. Khalabayev (Moscow-Leningrad: Gosizdat, 1926-30) [referred to in footnotes asPS]. For Dostoevsky's letters: F. M. Dostoevskii, Pis 'ma in four volumes, edited by A. S. Dolinin (Moscow: 1928-59) [re­ ferred to in footnotes as Pis 'ma]. Wherever possible I have replaced these quotations with passages from standard translations of Dostoevsky's works. References to these English-language versions are appended to Bakhtin's footnotes or, in xi xii D NOTE ON THE APPARATUS the text itself, to the quotation. There is no complete or authoritative English edition of Dostoevsky's correspondence, so all translations from the letters are mine. Despite its largely enthusiastic reception in musical circles, it almost immediately became the target of negative criticism by Russian authors who viewed the opera as a trivial and overly romanticized embarrassment to Pushkin’s novel. Criticism of the opera often revolves around the fact that the novel’s most significant feature—its self-conscious narrator—does not exist in the opera, thus completely changing one of the story’s defining attributes. Scholarship in defense of the opera began to appear in abundance during the 1990s with the work of Alexander Poznansky, Caryl Emerson, Byron Nelson, and Richard Taruskin. These authors have all sought to demonstrate that the opera stands as more than a work of overly personalized emotionalism. In my thesis I review the relationship between the novel and the opera in greater depth by explaining what distinguishes the two works from each other, but also by looking further into the argument that Tchaikovsky’s music represents the novel well by cleverly incorporating ironic elements as a means of capturing the literary narrator’s sardonic voice.

The Dickensian works were the source of inspiration for both writers be- ing coordinated with their moral and spiritual grounds. The paper contains a sketch of the chief motifs that are common for all the three classics based on comparative analysis of texts, as well as on archive materials.     The limits of polyphony: Dostoevsky to Petronius MARIA PLAZA Stockholm University In times when a theorist grows as authoritative as the Russian thinker Mikh- ail Mikhailovich Bakhtin has grown today, his theories are sometimes hastily applied to more texts than they can usefully explain. While the rereading, and possibly reconception, of the Roman novel in the light of his ideas on the novelistic genre is certainly a most important and exciting project, there may be a risk of overstatement. My aim in this paper, therefore, is to suggest an answer to the question of whether Petronius’ Satyrica can be said to be a “polyphonic novel” in Bakhtin’s sense.1 The concept of “polyphony” is fully developed in Bakhtin’s book Prob- lems in Dostoevsky’s Poetics,2 although there are discussions of the related categories “dialogism” and “heteroglossia” in his important essays of the 1930’s.3 It should be noted, however, that “heteroglossia” is not equivalent to polyphony: it implies a diversity of speech styles in a language, some- times with the further requirement that the styles should reflect and inter- penetrate each other; while polyphony always requires an interpenetration of ————— 1 It is not my aim to offer an exhaustive analysis; rather, I hope to present some examples and general arguments for my suggested solution, in order to make a modest contribution to an ongoing debate about Bakhtin and the classics. 2 The first edition of this work, entitled Problemy tvorchestva Dostoevskogo [Problems of Dostoevsky’s creative art], appeared in 1929, and was a much narrower discussion than the influential second edition of 1963.

    29 deborah a . martinsen Columbia University The Idiot: A Tragedy of Unforgiveness In characterizing The Idiot as a tragedy of unforgiveness, I am offering a new perspective on Nastasya Filippovna and the choices she faces throughout the novel, many of which hinge on Nastasya’s ability to forgive her wrongdoers or herself or both . In her article on forgiveness for The Routledge Encyclope- dia of Philosophy, Kathryn Norlock writes “Forgiveness is a response to wrong- doing characterized by forswearing or overcoming the fullness of blame that one could otherwise justifiably hold against a wrongdoer” 1. While some phi- losophers view forgiveness primarily as an internal process “characterized by a change of heart or a choice to revise one’s dispositions, beliefs, or attitudes to- ward the offender”,2 others see it primarily as a social practice “characterized by effecting of a morally significant consequence such as the release or relief of an offender” 3. In the case of Nastasya Filippovna, forgiveness is primarily an inter- nal process, one that requires that she overcome, on moral grounds, “the in- tense negative reactive attitudes – the vindictive passions of resentment, anger, hatred, and the desire for revenge – that are quite naturally occasioned when one has been wronged by another responsible agent” .4 The Idiot’s main action pivots around Nastasya Filippovna, whose guardi- an, Afanasy Totsky, abused her when she was younger and now wants to mar- ry elsewhere . As the narrator makes clear, Nastasya Filippovna hates not on- ly Totsky, but herself . The question posed throughout Part One is what will she do?
