It aims to answer two questions; (1) why the Sangha’s administration has gerontocracy been designed to serve the bureaucratic system that monks abandon social Sangha Council and political justices, and (2) how the monastic education curriculum are secularism designed to support such a conservative system. Ethnographic methodology Thai Buddhism was conducted and collected data were analyzed through the concept of gerontocracy. It found that (1) Thai Buddhism gains supports from the government much more than other religions. Parallel with the state’s bureaucratic system, the hierarchical conservative council contains the elderly monks. Those committee members choose to respond to the government policy in order to maintain supports rather than to raise social issues; (2) gerontocracy is also facilitated by the idea of Theravada itself. In both theory and practice, the charismatic leader should be the old one, implying the condition of being less sexual feeling, hatred, and ignorance. Based on this criterion, the moral leader is more desirable than the intelligent. The concept of “merits from previous lives” is reinterpreted and reproduced to pave the way for the non-democratic system. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 4 8 1 0 6 - 1346 Abstract The majority of research for this thesis took place during the Thai general election of 1988 when the new religious movements Santi Asoke and Wat Dhammakaya were subject to investigation for political activity despite, respectively, defiance or denial. The relationship between the Thai Sangha and lay devotees is examined in order to discover how it is that Thai monks, whom many researchers find powerless, can be accused of political activity. In the past, monks have been used to legitimate lay political leaders and have taken active roles in local leadership. This thesis aims to determine whether monks in Thailand have power and, if they do, how such power becomes politically threatening to the status quo. -

The Revival of the Bhikkhunī Order and the Decline of the Sāsana Bhikkhu Anālayo 1 Abstract In this article I study the revival of the bhikkhunī order in the Theravāda traditions and its supposed relation to a decline of the Buddha’s dispensation. Introduction My presentation begins with the contrast between the positive evalua- tion of the existence of an order of bhikkhunīs in early Buddhist discourse and the “prediction of decline,” according to which the establishing of this order would result in a decline of the Buddha’s dispensation (sāsana). The work begins by situating issues of shame and self-aversion sociologically, in order to understand how and why self-aversion became a significant topic of concern during the final quarter of the twentieth century. This discussion allows for a further investigation of shame as it has been addressed first by psychologists, for whom shame is often understood as a form of isolating self-aversion, and then by philosophers such as Bernard Williams and Emmanuel Levinas, for whom shame attunes the person to the moral expectations of a community, and therefore to ethical commands that arise from beyond the individual self. -

Festival of the Tenth Lunar Month in Nakhon Si Thammarat (11/10/2015) Each year, in the 10th lunar month, usually around September and October, a major cultural event is held in southern Thailand, especially Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The Tenth Lunar Month Festival involves merit-making to show respect and gratitude to the local peoples deceased ancestors. This year, Nakhon Si Thammarat holds the Tenth Lunar Month Festival between 6 and 15 October, but the highlight of this festival takes place from 10 to 13 October. On this occasion, the family members living far from their hometowns visit their families to make merit in memory of their ancestors. Legend has it that during the 10th lunar month, the souls of deceased ancestors are freed from the other world to visit their relatives in the human world. Nakhon Si Thammarat residents take this opportunity to prepare offerings not only for their deceased ancestors, but also for other spirits and Buddhist monks. The offerings consist of different kinds of food placed on beautifully decorated trays. Participants in the merit-making ceremony join a procession carrying trays of offerings from the town hall to Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, the main Buddhist temple of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The colorful procession attracts both local residents and tourists. Other activities are also held, such as a trade fair, exhibitions, and cultural performances. Nakhon Si Thammarat is the largest province in southern Thailand, in terms of population (more than 1.5 million in 2014). It is the second largest province in the South, after Surat Thani, in terms of land area. -
