Alcoa Anglesea: Flora and Fauna Surveys of Proposed Mine Extension Area 7 Summary of Values 7.1 Flora Five Ecological Vegetation Classes are present within the study area: • Heathy Woodland (EVC 48) – Conservation Status of Least Concern; • Clay Heathland (EVC 7) – Conservation Status of Vulnerable; • Sedgy Riparian Woodland (EVC 198) – Conservation Status of Depleted; • Damp Sands Herb-rich Woodland (EVC 3) – Conservation Status of Vulnerable; and • Swamp Scrub (EVC 53) – Conservation Status of Vulnerable. Clay Heathland is the most abundant EVC within the study area, and its centre of distribution in the bioregion is the eastern Otways. The total area of Clay Heathland (as mapped by Ecology Australia for this project) for the eastern Otways is 683.3 ha, of which 179.4 ha are located within the proposed mine extension area. A total of 315 indigenous and naturalised exotic vascular plant species was recorded from the study area, of which 284 (90 %) are indigenous and 31 (10 %) are exotic. No populations of targeted threatened plant species were recorded, and it is improbable that these species exist within the study area. Six plant species listed as ‘rare’ or ‘poorly known’ within Victoria by DSE (2005) were recorded within the study area. An additional undescribed species, Correa aff. reflexa (Anglesea), considered as at least ‘vulnerable’ by the authors, was also recorded in the study area. 7.2 Fauna A total of 85 vertebrate fauna species were recorded from the study area during targeted surveys. These comprise the following: • 21 mammal species (17 native and 4 introduced species), including seven bat species; • 53 bird species (51 native and two introduced species); • Seven native reptile species; and • Four native frog species. One EPBC Act-listed fauna species were recorded within the study area, the Southern Brown Bandicoot Isoodon obesulus obesulus . This species was recorded at 27 locations throughout the study area, which represents high-quality (i.e. breeding) habitat for this species. Five FFG Act-listed fauna species were recorded from the study area: Southern Brown Bandicoot, Swamp Antechinus Antechinus minimus maritimus , White-footed Dunnart Final 61 Alcoa Anglesea: Flora and Fauna Surveys of Proposed Mine Extension Area Sminthopsis leucopus , Rufous Bristlebird Dasyornis broadbenti caryochorus and the Masked Owl Tyto novaehollandiae novaehollandiae . Of these species, all except the Masked Owl are considered to be ‘resident’ (i.e. make regular use) in the study area. Three further species were recorded which are otherwise classified as threatened in Victoria (under DSE’s Advisory List of Threatened Vertebrate Fauna 2007); the Southern Toadlet Pseudophryne semimarmorata , the Eastern Pygmy-possum Cercartetus nanus and the Mountain Dragon Rankinia diemensis . These species are considered to be resident within the study area. Twenty species listed under the Migratory and/or Marine-overfly Schedules of the EPBC Act were recorded in the study area. The study area does not support an ecologically significant population, does not represent the edge of range of a species and it does not constitute critical or limiting habitat for these species, or those considered to have a moderate or high likelihood of regular occurrence. Three further species listed under the FFG Act have been recorded previously in the study area; these are Lewin’s Rail Rallus pectoralis pectoralis , Chestnut-rumped Heathwren Hylacola pyrrhopygia and Powerful Owl Ninox strenua . Of these three species, only the Chestnut-rumped Heathwren is likely to make regular use of the study area (i.e. be resident). 7.3 Net Gain • The study area contains 266.15 Habitat Hectares of remnant vegetation. • All remnant vegetation is of Very High Conservation Significance based on: • Conservation Status of EVCs x Habitat Scores, and/or • Occurrence of the ‘best 50% of habitat for a threatened species’ (Southern Toadlet). • Offsets for the loss of Very High Conservation Significance vegetation are 2 x the calculated loss in Habitat Hectares.
