The Festival is one of the highlights of the NAMT year, bringing together 600+ industry professionals for two days of intense focus on new musical theatre works and the remarkably talented writing teams who create them. This year we are particularly excited not only about the quality, but also about the diversity—in theme, style, period, place and people—represented across the eight shows that were selected from over 150 submissions. We’re visiting 17th-century England and early 20th century New York. We’re spending some time in the world of fairy tales—but not in ways you ever have before. We’re visiting Indiana and Georgia and the world of reality TV. Regardless of setting or stage of development, every one of these shows brings something new—something thought-provoking, funny, poignant or uplifting—to the musical theatre field. This Festival is about helping these shows and writers find their futures. Beyond the Festival, NAMT is active year-round in supporting members in their efforts to develop new works. This year’s Songwriters Showcase features excerpts from just a few of the many shows under development (many with collaboration across multiple members!) to salute the amazing, extraordinarily dedicated, innovative work our members do. Arts & Humanities High Art, High Ideals: Rachel Chavkin Takes on Broadway The Tony Award-winning director of Hadestown may be theater’s most forward- thinking artist. By Stuart Miller '90JRN | Fall 2019 Zack DeZon / Getty Images Making her way to the stage of Radio City Music Hall to accept the 2019 Tony Award for best direction of a musical, Rachel Chavkin ’08SOA was thinking about time. She had all of ninety seconds to get to the microphone and deliver her speech, which was written on a much-creased piece of paper folded in her hands. Seven months pregnant, Chavkin, thirty-eight, was not about to sprint. As she told Columbia Magazine days later, “I warned my husband: if they call my name, I won’t have time to hug you!” Hadestown, an enthralling, profoundly moving retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, would, by night’s end, capture eight awards, including best original score and best musical. The accolades were not only hard won — Chavkin, a leading light of experimental theater, and Anaïs Mitchell, a singer-songwriter from Vermont, shaped and refined Hadestown for seven years — but also, some might say, overdue. In seventy-three years of the Tony Awards (named after Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, and theater advocate), Chavkin became just the fourth woman to win for best direction of a musical, joining Julie Taymor (The Lion King), Susan Stroman (The Producers), and Diane Paulus ’97SOA (Pippin). And in 2019, out of twelve new musicals on Broadway, Hadestown was the only one directed by a woman. The show, playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre on West 48th Street, is set mostly in a New Orleans–style barrelhouse at a time of economic and environmental decay.

New Voices Festival 2016 Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre Conrad Prebys Theatre Center January 15 – 17, 2016 Welcome to our third annual New Voices Festival! The Old Globe boasts a long and distinguished history as an incubator of new American works for the stage, and with the New Voices Festival we are proud to build on that strong legacy. We’re committed to bringing the best new playwriting to San Diego, and we love to give you opportunities to see the artistic process in action. We’re also working to expand the support we are able to give the outstanding writers who join us for the Festival. This year, two of the creative teams spent a week with us at the theatre, developing their pieces in collaboration with actors and the artistic staff of the Globe. This Festival is central to our efforts to develop a multifaceted new play development infrastructure here, and we are pleased to see it grow from year to year. We always hope that the New Voices Festival will launch ongoing relationships with the writers we feature. Since 2013, we’ve commissioned new work from two of the Festival playwrights (JC Lee and Anna Ziegler), programmed a new play by a Festival playwright (Kimber Lee’s tokyo fish story), and in just a few weeks, on this very stage, we will open the world premiere of a piece we originally read in the Festival: Anna Ziegler’s The Last Match. Introduction Welcome to Best of Both Worlds! Directing this production on the Loeb Mainstage is a very special moment for me. As an undergraduate at Harvard, I dreamed of someday directing in this theater. I am thrilled to share my first production on the Mainstage with you, and am honored to do so in the company of such an inspired team of artists. Best of Both Worlds is part of our Shakespeare Exploded! Festival — an array of theatrical events inspired by Shakespeare. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to see The Donkey Show, our disco adapta- tion of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at our new club theater venue OBERON, and Sleep No More, an immersive production inspired by Macbeth and Hitchcock’s thrillers at Brookline’s Old Lincoln School. Both of these phenomenal shows will continue to play every weekend until January 3rd. Other exciting events include our reading of Robert Brustein’s play Mortal Terror on December 6 on the Loeb Mainstage, and Marcus Stern’s production of Heiner Muller’s Hamletmachine in the Loeb Experimental Theater from December 17–20.
