We would like to acknowledge the many people who have assisted in the development of the Hydro-Climatic Data Network (HCDN). This project was carried out in cooperation with the Office of Surface-Water of the USGS Water Resources Division, which provided technical and logistical support as needed throughout the course of the project. We are especially grateful for the assistance of Ernest F. Hubbard, Jr., Assistant Chief of the Office of Surface-Water, whose knowledge of the USGS streamflow gaging program and sustained interest in the HCDN were invaluable to us in the development of the HCDN. We also thank Verne R. Schneider, currently Assistant Chief Hydrologist for Program Coordination and Technical Support, but formerly Chief of the Office of Surface-Water, and Charles W. Boning, presently Chief of the Office of Surface-Water, for providing administrative aid at several key junctures. We thank the Chiefs of the USGS District offices for letting their already over- committed staff members participate in this effort. (A District office of the USGS Water Resources Division corresponds administratively to a single State of the United States, with the exception of three multi-State Districts.) Questions concerning the records for any particular gaging station should be directed to the Chief of the District office that is responsible for maintaining the site of interest. (Note that the District Office responsible for a gaging station is generally but not necessarily the same as the District office of the State in which the gaging station of interest is located.) We particularly acknowledge the contributions of those persons in each District office that assisted us in this effort. The district staff participation was critical to the determination of which records were suitable for inclusion in the HCDN by the criteria we had defined. In addition, it was only with the diligent help of the District personnel that those many bothersome, though generally small errors, that appear over time in any dynamic working data set, such as the National Water Data Storage and ffetrieval System (WATSTORE), were identified and corrected to the best of our abilities. In some cases, more than one member of the District staff was actively involved over the course of the project. We have tried to note below all of the many who helped, but if we have missed anyone who contributed to the effort, we sincerely apologize. One way that DNR fulfills this part of its mission is through its fish hatchery programs. Many anglers are C aware of the successful trout stocking program and the seven coldwater hatcheries that support this T important fishery in West Virginia. The warmwater hatchery program, although a little less well known, is still very significant to West Virginia anglers. O West Virginia’s warmwater hatchery program has been instrumental in providing fishing opportunities F to anglers for more than 60 years. For most of that time, the Palestine State Fish Hatchery was the state’s primary facility dedicated to the production of warmwater fish. Millions of walleye, muskellunge, channel catfish, hybrid striped bass, saugeye, tiger musky, and largemouth F and smallmouth bass have been raised over the years at Palestine and stocked into streams, rivers, and lakes across the state. I A recent addition to the DNR’s warmwater hatchery program is the Apple Grove State Fish Hatchery in Mason County. Construction of the C hatchery was completed in 2003. The State of West Virginia was cut off from Virginia during the civil war and was admitted to the Union on June 19, 1863. As orig­ inally constituted it consisted of 48 counties; subsequently, in 1866, it was enlarged by the addition -of two counties, Berkeley and Jeffer­ son, which were also detached from Virginia. The boundaries of the State are in the highest degree irregular. Tom Ryan and John McGuckin Report prepared for Corangamite Catchment Management Authority August 2007 Drought impact on fish communities and river health in the Corangamite Region Executive Summary This study provides a rapid assessment of river condition and aims to determine the key issues affecting aquatic health including the relative impact of drought. It is designed to help prioritise potential management actions in the drought response plan. Pre-existing catchment issues, such as water extraction, extensive land clearing and lack of riparian vegetation can directly affect river health and compounds impacts caused directly by drought. Where catchments have been degraded by past management practices, the severity of the drought upon stream health has been the most extreme. Waters examined in this study have been classified into 3 distinct classes of river health, streams with minor stress, streams with moderate stress and streams that have severe stress. Waterways with minor drought stress had lower streamflows than normal as a result of the drought but were in no immediate threat of becoming severely stressed by the drought. Waters classified as having moderate stress are ones in which the existing aquatic fauna is expected to be experiencing some stress, however, the stress is unlikely to have caused the loss of species. Streamflow may have ceased in freshwater reaches and water deterioration may have occurred in remaining refuge habitat, however, the duration of the stress upon aquatic fauna has only been for a relatively short period.

    WEST VIRGINIA FISHINGRegulations Summary 2019 wvdnr.gov From the Director Last year the DNR released an updated, online interactive map that provides valuable information on all aspects of fishing and hunting adventures. DNR personnel are continuing to update information and produce new, useful maps. After hearing about the need from anglers in an online survey, DNR personnel collected lake depth data and processed new bathymetry maps for 35 lakes across the state. These maps are now available on the interactive fishing map and downloadable to print or take with you on your mobile device. Also, anglers can now access the real-time streamflow conditions from the U.S. Geological Survey on our interactive fishing map. The real-time information allows anglers to check on flow and make decisions about whether fishing conditions are ideal before heading out to a stream or river. Visit wvdnr.gov/gis for more details and links to the interactive map and other map pages. You helped fund this project through the Sport Fish Restoration Program, using excise taxes on selected fishing equipment and boat fuel. I encourage you to take advantage of West Virginia’s abundant natural resources and go fishing every chance you get. And take a friend or family member with you.
