5. Airport Developments

Parkway Station Footbridge The new passenger footbridge at Southampton Airport Parkway rail station was officially opened by the Rail Minister, Chris Mole, in December 2009. The bridge (located 100 metres from the airport) provides a covered walkway with lift access, making it significantly easier for passengers with luggage, children or reduced mobility.

Retail Food and Beverage The airport café in the main concourse has been completely redeveloped. A new Costa Coffee and Mitchell’s Kitchen & Bar has opened. Phase 2, upstairs in the Departure Lounge is underway and will open in summer 2010. The developments represent an investment of over £3 million.

Terminal Roof Glazing Work has begun on replacing the airport’s roof glazing to provide a lighter and brighter terminal. The new glazing also brings environmental benefits, as it has special coating to reflect sunlight in the summer, and retain heat in the winter. Around 33% of the heat gained from the sun will be eliminated, meaning less energy will be needed for air cooling.

Toilets The toilet facilities in the Departure Lounge and Arrival’s Hall are being completely redeveloped. Phase 2, in the main concourse will commence shortly. The investment totals more than £830,000.

Forecourt Changes The forecourt at Southampton Airport will close in the early part of this year to improve security protection in line with Government guidelines. A temporary trial took place for three weeks in November 2009, to check the final design ready for the permanent changes.

The concrete blocks on the forecourt (brought in overnight following the attack) are currently being replaced with stainless steel bollards which are the latest design in forecourt protection and will provide a welcoming and secure airport entrance to the airport.

Upon completion of the project, all passengers will be dropped-off and collected in a special area within the short stay car park, located adjacent to the airport and forecourt area. The area is conveniently positioned on the ground floor, just 60 seconds walk from the terminal building. The first 10 minutes of parking will be provided free of charge. Security approved vehicles will be permitted access to the forecourt, such as public buses, emergency services and other organisations.

6. Management and Staff

Breeze Through Recognition Awards Southampton Airports recognition scheme, The Breeze Through Awards, recognises outstanding staff. Staff can nominate their own team, another team or individual using a nomination form, and with support from the relevant manager. Monthly winners receive a trophy, and have their case study displayed across the airport.

September’s award winner was Philip Wood from Meteor for assisting a passenger with car parking charges. They said: "He was so helpful, polite and understanding. He told us exactly what to do and sorted out the very expensive problem we thought he had."

October’s award winner was Chas Paley (BAA) for helping passengers with their overweight luggage. They needed to remove items, but had locked the padlock key in the suitcase. Chas was asked to break the zip, leaving the suitcase unusable. However, he went across to the workshop to get the right tool to simply remove the lock, leaving two very happy customers.

The Aviance PRM team won the November award for their high standards of customer service and the numerous compliments received by passengers with reduced mobility. This even included a special mention on local radio by a delighted passenger

The December award went to a team from Aramark. Pia Beck, Julie Pal, Adrian Pennells, Agnieszka Niemcyzk, Matthew Birch & Sharon McGlish won the award for the teams hard work and commitment in delivering the opening of the temporary catering unit. They worked throughout the night to ensure the smooth opening of the unit on top of their normal working day.

2009 Champions In November 2009, the first 12 award winners were invited to the first annual ceremony where the overall champions were announced. During the year, over 70 nominations were entered for teams and individuals who have gone the extra mile to ensure customers experience an easy, fast and friendly service, and enabled customers to ‘breeze through’ the airport.

Twelve monthly winners went forward to an airport judging panel who selected the champion for 2009. The panel included independent industry expert, Sarah Davis from Tourism South East.

The Gold Award went to Jennifer Mullins for her role as an Airport Ambassador. Jenny used her initiative to create dedicated information packs for cruise passengers visiting the region, as well as personally driving forward initiatives to help promote the airport to passengers.

The Silver Award went to Julie Phair in Aviance who went the extra mile to locate a passengers lost briefcase by calling every single taxi company in the city. The story had a happy ending with Julie personally handing the briefcase to the passenger as he stepped onto his aircraft to depart.

The Bronze Award went to a team of three from the airport security and service delivery teams. Michelle Merry, Trevor Compton and Neil Whitcher helped and supported an autistic boy and his family, giving him the confidence to fly on his trip to America later in the year.

7. Vortex

There was one reported occurrence of vortex damage during the period September to December 2009. In September, a Townhill Park resident called and advised that they had already repaired the damage before calling. The incident was recorded and the Head of Airside Operations checked a neighbouring property for damage. No damage was found on either property.

8. Community

Four students were successful and will take up roles with Airside Operations, Security, Engineering, Marketing and the Airport Ambassador teams.

The team joined around 60 climbers for the charity event. The charity is particularly supported by airport staff as Sophie’s father, Mike Barringer, works in airside operations at the airport. Many staff knew Sophie and have been inspired by the achievements of the charity since it began in 2003.

The programme was officially launched behind the scenes at NATS Swanwick, where the students were challenged to design a product or service that is “breeze through” and could be used in the aviation industry. The Dragons Den style finale will be at the new cruise terminal in Southampton on 24th March 2010.

Community & Stakeholder Conference The next conference will be held during Autumn 2010.
