It is a small- bodied, understory and mid-canopy dweller that occurs within the evergreen lowland and montane tropical rain forests along Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/mspecies/article/46/915/93/2643022 by guest on 15 June 2021 the eastern slope of the Andes in Peru, Bolivia, and extreme northern Argentina, and the western Amazon Basin in Brazil and Peru between 200 and 2,700 m in elevation. S. ignitus is 1 of 28 species in the genus Sciurus, and 1 of 8 in the subgenus Guerlinguetus. The taxonomic status of this species, as with other small sciurids in Peru and Bolivia, remains ambiguous. S. ignitus is currently listed as ‘‘Data Deficient’’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Sciurus urucumus, the only species of squirrel previously known with certainty to range into Paraguay, occurs in the Chiquitano Forest of the northeastern Paraguayan Chaco. We provide details of the Paraguayan habitats for the known specimens of both species. At present, we know of no localities where the two species co-occur. We critically evaluate some of the morphological characters used previously to characterize S. ignitus. Interviews with local hunters, including Ach´eindigenous ones, coupled with an earlier published account, indicate that the squirrel Sciurus aestuans also occurs in eastern Paraguay’s Departamento Alto Paran´a,although no specimens are now available from the country. Therefore, the aim of this article is to report two field observations of mycophagy in Southern and Northern Brazil, involving the black-capped squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis) and the Azara‟s agouti (Dasyprocta azarae). The primates were observed eating ascomata of Ascopolyporus sp. (Cordycipitaceae, Hypocreales), while the rodents were consuming immature stages („eggs‟) of Itajahya galericulata (Phallaceae, Phallales). This was the fourth annual Biosphere Expeditions survey in the area and sampling took place between 6 and 19 September 2015. Sixteen layperson citizen scientists were trained, in two groups, to help collect data. The first group consisted of ten persons and the second group of six. The total area surveyed was 48 square km, encompassing three major types of forest: terra firme, palm swamp forest and seasonally flooded forest. Species presence was recorded using a standard 2x2 km cell grid methodology developed for terrestrial expeditions using citizen scientist volunteers. -

Therefore, we installed 13 camera stations (450 ha polygon) over a period of six months. On 1,762 camera-days and in 1,654 independent capture events, we recorded 24 mammalian species that represent the native fauna of large and medium-sized mammals including apex-predators (Puma, Jaguar), meso-carnivores (Ocelot, Jaguarundi, Margay), and large herbivores (Tapir, Collared and White lipped Peccary). -

Batzer* Abstract Background: The evolution of Alu elements has been ongoing in primate lineages and Alu insertion polymorphisms are widely used in phylogenetic and population genetics studies. Alu subfamilies in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri), a New World Monkey (NWM), were recently reported. Squirrel monkeys are commonly used in biomedical research and often require species identification. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) Perform locus-specific PCR analyses on recently integrated Alu insertions in Saimiri to determine their amplification dynamics, and 2) Identify a subset of Alu insertion polymorphisms with species informative allele frequency distributions between the Saimiri sciureus and Saimiri boliviensis groups. Results: PCR analyses were performed on a DNA panel of 32 squirrel monkey individuals for 382 Alu insertion events ≤2% diverged from 46 different Alu subfamily consensus sequences, 25 Saimiri specific and 21 NWM specific Alu subfamilies. Of the 382 loci, 110 were polymorphic for presence / absence among squirrel monkey individuals, 35 elements from 14 different Saimiri specific Alu subfamilies and 75 elements from 19 different NWM specific Alu subfamilies (13 of 46 subfamilies analyzed did not contain polymorphic insertions). Of the 110 Alu insertion polymorphisms, 51 had species informative allele frequency distributions between Saimiri sciureus and Saimiri boliviensis groups. Conclusions: This study confirms the evolution of Alu subfamilies in Saimiri and provides evidence for an ongoing and prolific expansion of these elements in Saimiri with many active subfamilies concurrently propagating. -

Infant Handling Among Primates

Berman 1,2 1 Graduate Program in Evolution, Ecology and Behavior 2Department of Anthropology University at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York Primates, particularly females, tend to be attracted to infants that are not their own, and are often motivated to touch and handle them. However, species vary markedly in forms of handling and extents to which handling constitutes direct care, other affiliative behaviors, or aggression/abuse. Here, we review infant handling among primates from ultimate and proximate perspectives, focusing on a promising, but understudied hypothesized benefit—that handling enhances social bonds. We pay special attention to macaques and baboons, because handling in most of these species poses a special challenge in that it involves little actual care, and hence may be shaped by different and as yet unclear selective pressures from typical alloparental care. Costs, benefits, and hypothesized functions appear to vary across species based on multiple factors: a) individuals’ roles and characteristics, b) relationships between handlers and mothers, and c) the social context within the group. As a result, observed patterns of handling appear to be complex outcomes of the interaction between different, sometimes conflicting interests. Consequently, single unitary explanations for handling are as yet elusive. The most promising hypotheses based on short/medium term benefits appear to vary with species, breeding system, reproductive biology, socioecological factors, and life history characteristics. Explanations based on life history variables or long-term evolutionary processes related to cooperation appear to have broader applications, but nevertheless fail to explain infant handling in all its manifestations.
