We are glad you are here! Tis is the 90th annual meeting of the SPSA, one of the most diverse and robust meetings in political science. Scholars come to this meeting from all over the world, attracted by the quality of the work, diversity of the scholars and research, and creative formats. We strive to create an intellectually rich conference that provides formal and informal networking and mentoring opportunities for younger scholars and is also family friendly. Tere is something for everyone at this conference! SPSA Vice-President and Program Christopher Wlezien and his Program Committee have put together an excellent program, including 39 organized sections and 435+ panels. You might be interested in attending one of our 13 conferences-within-the- conference. Tese mini-conferences are organized around specifc topics such as Political Attitudes and Behavior in China or Medieval Political Teory. Each conference-within-a-conference includes a series of panels scheduled sequentially to allow ongoing conversations and a deeper dive into important topics. Reserve time in your schedule for a number of special events. On Tursday evening at 6:30 p.m., the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin, under the guidance of Dr. Paul Stekler, is presenting a Film Event: Postcards from the Great Divide. It will run concurrently with the Welcome Reception. Te Annual Business Meeting and Awards Presentation will begin at 11 am on Friday, January 18. My SPSA Presidential Address will begin Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. with a reception immediately following. For the second year, we will be having a fnale reception. Tis year we will gather at Cooper’s Pit BBQ at 217 Congress Ave starting at 7:30 p.m. Tis event will feature traditional Texas BBQ and is an easy walk from the hotel. During your stay in Austin, also make sure to spend time exploring the city’s rich cultural, historical, musical, and culinary oferings. It is a great city! Why not come for the conference and spend a few extra days? Finally, let me invite you to use the meeting as a gateway into membership in the SPSA. We exist to promote interest, research and teaching in theoretical and practical political problems and we are proud to publish the Journal of Politics. A primary mission of the Association is to maintain standards of respect between persons engaged in the professional study and practice of government and politics. Harassment and other forms of unprofessional conduct undermine this mission and the principles upon which the Association was founded thus constitute serious violations of association policy. 1. Purpose. The following Professional Conduct and Anti-harassment Policy describes the Association’s expectations for all who attend or participate in the SPSA annual Conference. It is modeled afer policies of other associations with whom we share common purpose in promoting a welcoming, inclusive, respectful, and safe environment that supports the free exchange of ideas. “Participant” in this policy includes anyone present at the SPSA or its sponsored events including staff, Association leadership, contractors, vendors, exhibitors, SPSA Members, guests, and all other participants. 2. Expected Behavior. All participants at the SPSA meetings and related events are expected to abide by this professional conduct policy in all meeting venues including ancillary events and official and unofficial social gatherings. This includes the following: Adhering to the norms of treating all with dignity and professional respect to promote conditions conducive to free academic exchange Agreeing to alert security personnel and relevant SPSA staff if a situation arises where someone is in imminent danger. 3. Unacceptable Behavior. Behaviors that violate the Professional Conduct Policy include, but are not limited to the following: • Actions that cause physical assault or harm (including unwelcome touch or groping) • Threats or actions that threaten physical harm • Threats or actions that cause or threaten professional harm, punishment, or retaliation • Intimidating, harassing, abusive, derogatory or demeaning speech or actions by any participant at any SPSA meeting or related event • Prejudicial actions or comments that coerce others, foment broad hostility or otherwise undermine professional equity or the principles of free academic exchange • Unwelcome solicitation of emotional or physical intimacy • Deliberate intimidation, stalking or following • Harassing photography or recording • Sustained, unprofessional disruption of panels, talks, or other SPSA related events • Other intentionally disruptive behavior Southern Political Science Association • 90th A n n u a l C o n f e r e n c e • J a n u a r y 1 7 – 1 9 , 2 0 1 9 • A u s t i n , T e x a s 9 Annual Business Meeting & Awards Friday, January 18, 2019 Business Meeting & Awards 11:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.
