Werner Bergengruen Zum
Ein christlicher Heide Vor 125 Jahren wurde Werner Bergengruen geboren Noch vor 50 Jahren zählte Werner Bergengruen zu den meistgelesenen deutschen Autoren. Am Ende umfasst sein Werk 12 große Romane, ca. 200 Novellen und ca. 500 Gedichte. 1967 ermittelte ihn eine Spiegel-Umfrage unter deutschen Studenten als beliebtesten Autor neben Hermann Hesse. Dann allerdings traf ihn der Bannstrahl Adornos, der bekanntlich „nach Auschwitz“ Lyrik nicht mehr ertragen konnte, schon gar nicht einen Gedichtband, der mit Die heile Welt überschrieben war. Und es kam die Kulturrevolution der 68er, die Bergengruen aus den Schullesebüchern und Literaturgeschichten verbannte - mit noch so manch anderen Namen, beispielhaft zu nennen: Reinhold Schneider, Stefan Andres, Elisabeth Langgässer, Gertrud von Le Fort. Aktuell zu vermelden ist, dass er immerhin in den Lehrplänen für bayerische Schulen wieder auftaucht. Werner Bergengruen wird am 16. September 1892 in Riga in eine Gesellschaft hineingeboren, die stark feudalistisch geprägt ist: eine aristokratisch-patrizische deutsche Minderheit, nämlich die Balten, beherrscht eine lettische Mehrheit unter formaler russischer Oberhoheit. Werner Bergengruen kommt mit russischem Pass nach julianischer Zählung zur Welt, was später in Reichsdeutschland – vor allem unter der preußischen Bürokratie – zu einigen Irritationen führt. Seine Amme ist eine Russin. Im Rückblick sieht er sein ganzes Leben von solch „verzwickten“ Verhältnissen, von Abweichungen gegenüber dem Normalen geprägt (dazu gehört für einen Balten auch die Konversion zum Katholizismus). Er mache „immer alles anders als andere Leute“, scherzt die Familie. Und er selbst sieht sich – weltanschaulich, politisch, literarisch – stets „zwischen zwei Stühlen“. Auch gegen die Vereinnahmung als „christlicher“ oder „katholischer Autor“ wehrt er sich vehement. Wenn überhaupt, sei er - zuhause in allen mythischen Traditionen - ein „christlicher Heide“. -

4. The Nazis Take Power Anyone who interprets National Socialism as merely a political movement knows almost nothing about it. It is more than a religion. It is the determination to create the new man. ADOLF HITLER OVERVIEW Within weeks of taking office, Adolf Hitler was altering German life. Within a year, Joseph Goebbels, one of his top aides, could boast: The revolution that we have made is a total revolution. It encompasses every aspect of public life from the bottom up… We have replaced individuality with collective racial consciousness and the individual with the community… We must develop the organizations in which every individual’s entire life will be regulated by the Volk community, as represented by the Party. There is no longer arbitrary will. There are no longer any free realms in which the individual belongs to himself… The time of personal happiness is over.1 How did Hitler do it? How did he destroy the Weimar Republic and replace it with a totalitarian government – one that controls every part of a person’s life? Many people have pointed out that he did not destroy democracy all at once. Instead, he moved gradually, with one seemingly small compromise leading to another and yet another. By the time many were aware of the danger, they were isolated and alone. This chapter details those steps. It also explores why few Germans protested the loss of their freedom and many even applauded the changes the Nazis brought to the nation. Völkisch Writers and National Socialism
CULTURAL HISTORY AND LITERARY IMAGINATION This book provides a view of literary life under the Nazis, highlighting • Guy Tourlamain the ambiguities, rivalries and conflicts that determined the cultural climate of that period and beyond. Focusing on a group of writers – in particular, Hans Grimm, Erwin Guido Kolbenheyer, Wilhelm Schäfer, Emil Strauß, Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen and Rudolf Binding – it examines the continuities in völkisch-nationalist thought in Germany from c.1890 into the post-war period and the ways in which völkisch-nationalists identified themselves in opposition to four successive German regimes: the Kaiserreich, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the Federal Republic. Although their work Völkisch predated Hitler’s National Socialist movement, their contribution to preparing the cultural climate for the rise of Nazism ensured them continued prominence in the Third Reich. Those who survived into the post-war era continued to represent the völkisch-nationalist worldview in the West German public sphere, opposing both Socialism and National Writers the Soviet and liberal-democratic models for Germany’s future. While not uncontroversial, they were able to achieve significant publishing success, suggesting that a demand existed for their works among the German public, stimulating debate about the nature of the recent past and its effect on Germany’s cultural and political identity and position in the world. Völkisch Writers and National Socialism Guy Tourlamain received his D.Phil. from Oxford University in 2007. He also spent time as a visiting student at the University of Gießen, A Study of Right-Wing Political Culture University of Hamburg and Humboldt University in Berlin as well as undertaking postdoctoral research at the German Literature in Germany, 1890–1960 Archive in Marbach am Neckar. -

Begegnungen mit Schriftstellern 1944-1991 Hans Maier Meine Schwestern waren viel älter als ich — berufstätig schon, als ich noch ein Kind war. Sie arbeiteten in einem großen Verlag, den jeder kannte — bei Herder in Freiburg. Von ihnen erhielt ich die ersten Nachrichten aus dem Reich der Bücher. Ich hörte von Manuskripten, Lektoren, Korrektoren, von Kalkulation, Satz und Druck, vom Falzen, Binden, Prägen. Und natürlich hörte ich auch von Schriftstellern, Autoren, die im Verlag aus und ein gingen. Meine Neugier war geweckt. Was waren das für Leute — Schrift steller, Autoren? Meine Schwestern im Verlag sahen die Autoren ganz aus der Nähe — das war benei denswert. Aber sie sahen sie auch, so schien es, unter mancherlei Winkeln der Fragwür digkeit. Der eine, überreich an Einfällen, war im Alltag ein Geizhals; der andere, ein Meister der Erzählung (wenigstens in seinen Büchern), brachte keine drei Sätze heraus, wenn man mit ihm ins Gespräch kam. Andere waren zerstreut oder vergammelt, hoch mütig oder nachlässig, aufdringlich oder zudringlich — kurz, die Welt der Bücher zerfiel in den Erzählungen meiner Schwestern in ein Panoptikum seltsamer und anfechtbarer Fi guren. »Glaub ja nicht«, sagte die jüngere von beiden, »daß Autoren so sind wie ihre Bü cher. Bestenfalls wollen sie so sein!« Das war nun eine wichtige, wenn auch verwirrende Auskunft; sie ging mir lang im Kopf herum, im Grund bis heute. ** Doch es gab auch unbestrittene, unanfechtbare Autoren. Eines Tages schwenkte meine Schwester, die auch für den Atlantis-Verlag arbeitete, ein Bündel Briefe in den Händen: »Die darf ich nicht lochen, die muß ich ungefaltet aufheben.« Es waren Briefe von Ri carda Huch. -

Jay, Chair This dissertation argues that ideas and experiences of friendship were central to the thinking of German radical conservatives in the twentieth century, from the pre-WWI years to the emergence, beginning in the 1970s, of the New Right. I approach this issue by examining the role of friendship in the circle around the writer Ernst Jünger (1895-1998). Like many in his generation, Jünger’s youthful alienation from a “cold” bourgeois society was felt via a contrast to the intimacy of personal friendship. A WWI soldier, Jünger penned memoirs of the trenches that revealed similar desires for mutual understanding, glorifying wartime comradeship as a bond deeper than words and a return to the “tacit accord” that supposedly marked traditional communities. After 1933, Jünger turned from a right-wing opponent of democracy into a voice of “spiritual resistance” to the Nazi regime. For Jünger and other non-Nazi Germans, friendship was a crucial space of candid communication and nonconformity to the norms of the Third Reich. -

Sometimes entire works were translated or paraphrased into modern languages, sometimes medieval motifs, themes, figures, or concepts impacted modern texts. This article examines one remarkable example, Werner Bergengruen’s highly popular novella “Die drei Falken” (1928) the source of inspiration of which was loosely Boccaccio’s story told on Day V, no. 9 in his Decameron (ca. 1350). Throughout time, the falcon has regularly symbolized courtly love, nobility, and the desire for individual freedom. After a discussion of Boccaccio’s text and a selection of medieval examples where the same motive appears, this article examines how Bergengruen transformed the symbol of the falcon into an expression of human nobility and deeply felt desire for personal freedom. Medieval Themes and Motifs in Modern Literature Contrary to many assumptions that the Middle Ages might matter little in modern literature, the opposite often proves to be the case insofar as there are countless examples of poems, novels, short stories, plays, and other types of texts at least since the early nineteenth century in which medieval themes, topics, materials, ideals, motives, and elements emerge more or less significantly (for the situation in the history of modern German literature, see Grosse and Rautenberg).
