Une si longue presence: comment le monde arabe a perdu ses juifs 1947-1967 by Nathan Weinstock, Plon, 2008, 358 pp. Lyn Julius The picture on the front cover of Nathan Weinstock’s book Une si longue presence shows two barred windows. Through the window on the left, the sultan’s lions peer out. In the adjoining cage, the Jews of Fez. When the photograph was taken in 1912, the Jews were sheltering in the sultan’s menagerie from a murderous riot on the eve of the establishment of the French protectorate of Morocco. The implication is clear: the Jews’ place is with the sultan’s beasts. It was the Jews’ job to feed the lions. In times of trouble, what place of refuge could be more natural than the sultan’s menagerie? The lions have long gone, and so have the Jews. Almost all the Jewish communities of the Middle East and North Africa have been driven to extinction: most went to Israel, where half the Jews or their descendants come from Muslim lands. A lethal cocktail of state-sanctioned persecution and mob violence, modulated to the peaks of Arab-Israeli tension, has caused the Jewish population to dwindle from one million in 1948 to 4,500 in one generation. It was an ethnic cleansing, says Weinstock, not even rivalled by Nazi Germany in 1939. Such a calamity cannot be explained by the Jews’ failure to integrate. They were indigenous, having for the most part settled in the Middle East and North Africa over 2,000 years ago – one thousand years before the advent of Islam. -

The work is a collection of around 750 ḥadīth about angels, followed by a postscript (khātima) that discusses theological questions regarding their status in Islam. The first section of this thesis looks at the state of the study of angels in Islam, which has tended to focus on specific issues or narratives. However, there has been little study of the angels in Islamic tradition outside studies of angels in the Qur’an and eschatological literature. This thesis hopes to present some of this more general material about angels. The following two sections of the thesis present an analysis of the whole work. The first of these two sections looks at the origin of Muslim beliefs about angels, focusing on angelic nomenclature and angelic iconography. The second attempts to understand the message of al-Suyūṭī’s collection and the work’s purpose, through a consideration of the roles of angels in everyday life and ritual. -
Abraham Ibn Ezra's “Yesod Mora”
139 Abraham ibn Ezra’s “Yesod Mora” By: H. NORMAN STRICKMAN Rabbi Abraham ben Meir ibn Ezra (1092–1164) was one of the outstanding scholars produced by medieval Sephardic Jewry. He was a poet, mathematician, astrologer, and grammarian. Above all he was one of medieval Jewry’s greatest Bible commentators. Abraham ibn Ezra was born in 1092 C.E.1 in Tudela, Spain and passed away in 1164. It is unclear whether he died in Lon- don,2 Calahorra3 or Rome.4 1 According to a statement found in several codices, Ibn Ezra (hence- forth “I.E.”) died on Monday, the first day of Adar 1 4927 (January 23, 1167) at the age of seventy-five. If this date is accepted, then I.E. was born in 1092. See M. Friedlander, The Commentary of Ibn Ezra on Isaiah (London, 1873), p. xxvii, n. 54. T HE R OBERT A. AND S ANDRA S. BORNS J EWISH S TUDIES P ROGRAM C OME A ND L EARN Jewish culture has long recognized the classroom as a special place—indeed a sacred place akin to the Temple. When the prophet Ezekiel spoke of a “little sanctuary” among the exiles, explains one rabbinic commentator, he was referring to houses of study. The core of the Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program (JSP), its holy of holies as it were, is the classroom. Our faculty is at the cutting edge of humanistic and social scientific research, in fields that include anthropology, linguistics, history, A NNUAL N EWSLETTER V OLUME 23 FALL 2004 2 Indiana University literary study, philosophy, and political science. In the classroom, they introduce their students to all these approaches, helping them to come to a deeper and more complex understanding of Jewish culture and experience. While our mission is a secular one, I nonetheless think of what my colleagues and I do in the classroom, the education of our students, as a kind of sacred activity, a tremendous responsibility requiring great devotion, vigilance, and care. What gives me great confidence in our ability to fulfill this responsibility is our outstanding faculty, including long-time veterans widely recognized for their contributions to scholarship and the university, and new additions to our faculty. To focus on the latter, in 2003-2004, we welcomed Dr. Mark Roseman as the Pat M. Glazer Chair of JS. Professor Roseman is internationally recognized for his scholarship on the Holocaust and post-war Europe, and is a riveting lecturer and engaging teacher, offering important courses on the Holocaust and the history of antisemitism. -

Exploring Judaism’s Denominational Divide Coming to America… Rabbi Brett R. Isserow OLLI Winter 2020 A very brief early history of Jews in America • September 1654 a small group of Sephardic refugees arrived aboard the Ste. Catherine from Brazil and disembarked at New Amsterdam, part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. • The Governor, Peter Stuyvesant, petitioned the Dutch West India Company for permission to expel them but for financial reasons they overruled him. • Soon other Jews from Amsterdam joined this small community. • After the British took over in 1664, more Jews arrived and by the beginning of the 1700’s had established the first synagogue in New York. • Officially named K.K. Shearith Israel, it soon became the hub of the community, and membership soon included a number of Ashkenazi Jews as well. • Lay leadership controlled the community with properly trained Rabbis only arriving in the 1840’s. • Communities proliferated throughout the colonies e.g. Savannah (1733), Charleston (1740’s), Philadelphia (1740’s), Newport (1750’s). • During the American Revolution the Jews, like everyone else, were split between those who were Loyalists (apparently a distinct minority) and those who supported independence. • There was a migration from places like Newport to Philadelphia and New York. • The Constitution etc. guaranteed Jewish freedom of worship but no specific “Jew Bill” was needed. • By the 1820’s there were about 3000-6000 Jews in America and although they were spread across the country New York and Charleston were the main centers. • In both of these, younger American born Jews pushed for revitalization and change, forming B’nai Jeshurun in New York and a splinter group in Charleston. -

Signed: 2 A BSTRACT Problem: Academic study of religious healing has recognised its symbolic aspects, but has tended to frame practice as ritual, knowledge as belief. In contrast, studies of scientific psychiatry recognise that discipline as grounded in intellectual tradition and naturalistic empiricism. This asymmetry can be addressed if: (a) psychiatry is recognised as a form of “religious healing”; (b) religious healing can be shown to have an intellectual tradition which, although not naturalistic, is grounded in experience. Such an analysis may help to reveal why globalisation has meant the worldwide spread not only of modern scientific medicine, but of religious healing. An especially useful form of religious healing to contrast with scientific medicine is Sufi healing as practised by the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order, which has become remarkable for its spread in the “West” and its adaptation to vernacular cultures. Research questions: (1) How is knowledge generated and transmitted in the Naqshbandi- Haqqani order? (2) How is healing understood and done in the Order? (3) How does the Order find a role in the modern world, and in the West in particular? Methods: Anthropological analysis of psychiatry as religious healing; review of previous studies of Sufi healing and the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order; ethnographic participant observation in the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order, with a special focus on healing.
