April 2020 Page 3 As I write this I do not know what situation we maybe facing as communities in response to Coronavirus. In the early stages it has been clear that there has been a lot of worry and fear, mainly I think because what we face is unknown. And the very natural response to that is to do what we feel necessary to protect ourselves. And that is of course wise.

But in our response, and not just as Christians but as human beings, and as we ponder the bravery and wonder of the Easter story, do not forget that ‘ourselves’ includes all of us. People we know and people we don’t know. We maybe heading into unprecedented times of periods of isolation and community detachment, and so please do keep an ear and eye out for each other and build those bridges in whatever way is possible, safe, and appropriate that means that whilst many of us may find ourselves isolated, we are not alone. The Women at the Tomb ~ An Easter Story ~ By Mary Dewar ~

IT was a grim little procession that set out for the garden: Mary, Joanna, Mary Magdalene, with the sad little bundle of spices, they moved quietly through the grey streets in the early dawn. There wasn’t much to say. They knew what they had to do, anointing bodies was a familiar task. But not this body! Everything in them rose up in rebellion at having to anoint THIS body. This was a body they could only associate with life, not death. In their mind’s eye they saw Him striding confidently along the dusty roads of Galilee with the sun shining and heaven in the air. The saw Him kneeling tenderly with a sick child, pouring His love into her until she smiled with health. They saw Him riding into Jerusalem on that funny little donkey and everyone going wild with excitement. So the extraordinary task of anointing the dead body was completely absurd; it made no sense, it was the death of all their hopes and anticipations which had risen within them, the delight of learning new things about themselves and about God. The excitement of hearing about the Kingdom of God coming over the horizon, but now it was all over….. all over. And so they wound their way through the tired streets, they picked their way through the silent, half-asleep guards at the gates, by then they were in sight of the garden and the tomb. Bleak despair swept over them again. Suddenly, they found their pace increasing, a deep urge within them to get to the tomb. What was about? What was that shimmering sensation in the air? They turned the corner and froze, as if winded. The tomb was wide open! After a few moments they crept silently forward again, feeling dizzy with anticipation, feeling as if their hearts were about to burst. Mary Magdalene led the way in. Empty! What? How? Who? This was crazy! And then, even as they gazed at the strips of grave cloth lying empty and bereft like a glove from which the hand had gone, they were aware of a presence. Behind them, silhouetted against the doorway of the grave with the light of dawn behind them were two men they didn’t recognize. Had they been outside all along? The women hadn’t seen them. Then one of them spoke and said those words, which would echo inside them for the rest of their lives. “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, he is risen!”

Page 6 April 2020 Terror, and joy, exploded through them. The living! Jesus among the living? But they had seen Him dead, taken down from the cross, put in a tomb, definitely DEAD. And now, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” He’s alive, these men are saying. Alive! And all of life is ablaze with glory.

Then, the women began to remember fragments of conversations, things He’d said that they’d filed away at the back of their minds. Had He suspected something might happen? Then they were ejected from the tomb by shear joy and Luke says, “They returned to the disciples.” Surely, they didn’t just ‘return’! They ran, they danced, they surged back to the disciples and they told their story! Ever since, that story has been told in a thousand, million ways and the reverberations of that explosion on Easter morning are still being felt in every corner of the world. “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” Why do WE look for the living among the dead? Why are we so slow to believe? So grudging about the resurrection? “He is not here, He is Risen!” Jesus is found where there is life; because what He’s doing all the time is bringing people and places to life with His loving touch. Our task is to share the resurrection; to live it and show it, so that people will know the great resurrection truth.

Spring - what a wonderful time of the year with every plant deciding winter is over. Suddenly we are caught unawares with a spurt in plant growth and warmer weather – but where to start in the garden? Tidy up all that winter detritus and do essential maintenance of tools - sharpening, cleaning, clearing and airing - sorry to be boring but maintenance should always come first!

Next— soil - every garden whatever its size requires healthy soil. Soil is so often taken for granted as everlasting and not requiring maintenance. It is not - soil needs nurturing.

May I strongly recommend an inexpensive pH meter. Simply stick the probes into moistened soil for an instant guide. These meters give a pH, fertility and moisture readings at a manual click of the settings. They work easily with a simple to read clear screen.

Check your soil has not become too compacted with heavy winter rain or muddy boots. Lightly rake to introduce much needed oxygen - remember plants breathe (respiration) through their roots and roots require movement to B.GIBBS access nutrients and available water.

Now for planting - but where to start in the garden?

May I suggest simply list the plants you would like to see in your garden, but then stop, think, and consider, will they be happy where you intend to plant them. Sun or shade, dry or moist - these conditions are very important to the planting.

What is on your list? A small tree or shrub, summer bulbs, perennials, many flowering annuals, some colourful climbers such as Black Eyed Susie – Thunbergia, that can easily be grown from seed, add long-lasting summer colour at an affordable price.

I advise visiting garden centres and quality websites but don’t forget to factor in delivery charges, and that plants are seldom as well advanced as those beautiful on screen specimens are illustrated.

I spend many happy hours ‘just looking’, but you must decide what is going to actually grow and work best in your garden and follow your garden plan as I mentioned in earlier editorials in Jan and Feb.

SPECIAL OFFER TO READERS OF THE PARISH MAGAZINE

Page 18 April 2020 TATWORTH W.I.

An email has been received from SCFWI County Chairwoman, Sandra Ford, confirming that a possible purchaser has been found for Wilton Lodge in Taunton. It was purchased by the federation in 1965 and being situated on the Trull road with parking room in the garden, has always been very convenient for members . However being an old building, it is no longer suitable. Without a lot of alterations it no longer fulfils the working and safety requirements of staff and members in the 21st century, so has to be sold. A replacement building to be used as headquarters has been located in Bridgewater.

Tatworth W.I. committee have decided, after reading Somerset County Federation advice, to cancel the meetings on Thursday 19th March & Thursday 16th April. A decision about the Annual Meeting on the 21st May will be made nearer the date. All lunches, trips, get togethers etc. have been cancelled, apart from the Summer Lunch in July, the SS Gt. Britain trip in June and the "Noughts Birthday Party" in August The decisions as to whether or not to go ahead with these will be made nearer each date. The ACWW walk might take place but at a later date. If things improve later in the summer then trips and lunches can quickly be organised. Somerset County (SCFWI) events are also being cancelled, although arrangements are still being made for the County visit to Denman in October and members can still apply.
