Katarzyna TURN A U Department of Plant Taxonomy and Phytogeography, Institute of Botany, Jagiellonian University, Lubicz 46, 31-512 Cracow, Poland THE INFLUENCE OF CADMIUM DUST ON FUNGI IN A PINO-QUERCETUM FOREST* ABSTRACT: The paper summarizes the main results of research on fungi, carried out in 1986-1989, on experimental plots in a mixed forest at Niepolomice near Cracow (Southern Poland). The plots were sown with cadmium dust in 1980. The paper contains data on the effect of the dust on mycelium growth, sporophore production and their heavy metal contents. The mycotrophy of plants growing on experimental plots was also studied. Some information is given on the influence of fertilizers following the dust treatment on fungi in the area described. KEY WORDS: fungi, heavy metals, fertilizers, mycelium biomass, sporophore production. 1. INTRODUCTION Among the many organisms that have been studied in connection with pollution, fungi are among the most resistant. There are a few known mechanisms which enable them to cope with an overdose of heavy metals. They either limit the uptake of the metal or they possess an internal or external mechanism that renders the metal harmless. They may influence the toxicity of the metal through the production of organic acids like oxalic, fumaric or citric acid (Foster 1949). They may also form stable complexes with metals on the surface or in the cell wall, making them harmless again.     SOMANEWS From the Sonoma County Mycological Association VOLUME 28: 7 MARCH 2016 SOMA Speaker: Catharine Adams March 17 At the Sonoma County Farm Bureau “How the Death Cap Mushroom Conquered the World” Cat Adams is interested in how chemical ecology in- fluences interactions between plants and fungi. For her PhD in Tom Bruns’ lab, Cat is studying the inva- sive ectomycorrhizal fungus, Amanita phalloides. The death cap mushroom kills more people than any oth- er mushroom, but how the deadly amatoxins influ- ence its invasion remains unexplored. Previously, Cat earned her M.A. with Anne Pringle at Harvard University. Her thesis examined fungal pathogens of the wild Bolivian chili pepper, Capsi- cum chacoense, and how the fungi evolved tolerance to spice. With the Joint Genome Institute, she is now sequencing the genome of one fungal isolate, a Pho- mopsis species, to better understand the novel en- zymes these fungi wield to outwit their plant host. Seven species of the families Hericiaceae Donk, Auriscalpiaceae Maas Geest. and Clima­ codontaceae Jiilich are briefly described, and their distributions in northwestern Europe (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) are mapped. Hericium erinaceus (Bull.) Pers. is found only in Denmark and southern Sweden. Hericium coral/oides (Scop.: Fr) Pers. is rather uncommon in the four countries, but extends from the Temperate zone to the Northern Boreal coast of North Norway. It seems to be absent from the most humid western areas. Its main hosts are species of Betula (ca. 65%) and Populus (18%), prefer­ ably trees growing in virgin forests. Creolophus cirrhatus (Pers.: Fr.) Karst. is common in the Southern Boreal zone and farther south; scattered records exist from the Middle Boreal zone and a few from the Northern Boreal zone. No records were found from the highly oceanic western coast of Norway. By far the commonest host genus of C. cirr­ hatus is Betula (69.5%), followed by Populus (25%). Dentipellis fragilis (Pers.: Fr.) Donk is a rare, predominantly Temperate to Hemiboreal species, favouring Fagus sylva­ tica (50%) as its host. In Finland D. fragilis was found on Acer tataricum, Alnus sp., Prunus padus and Sorbus aucuparia; a new find is reported from the central part of the Middle Boreal zone, from Acer platanoides.
