Hale This dissertation attempts to better understand the lives of college football players. The project begins with the assumption that the ways individuals talk about their experiences have a significant impact on others. An organizational framework is used to appreciate the central importance of communication in coordinating organizational relationships and developing impressions. College football players were gathered from three separate institutions representing different competitive levels of college football. Through interviews, participants were invited to provide stories that reflected their understandings of what it means to play college football. Because the intent of this study was to better understand issues related to the culture of playing football, common themes were derived from those interviews in an attempt to answer four separate research questions.

    Historical Overview Committee National Baseball Hall of Fame 25 Main Street Cooperstown, NY 13326 Re: Tommy John, MLB Pitcher and Hall of Fame Candidate Dear Members of the Historical Overview Committee, I am writing to you today to seek your support for the election of Major League Baseball pitcher Tommy John to the National Baseball Hall of Fame under the rules and election parameters of the Historical Overview Committee and as a Modern Baseball Era Hall of Fame candidate. On June 12, 1939 then Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis provided the dedicatory address for the National Baseball Museum and the Baseball Hall of Fame. During this dedicatory address Commissioner Landis stated “I should like to dedicate this museum to all America: to lovers of good sportsmanship, healthy body, team mind. For those are the principles of baseball.”i I write to you today to firmly state that Tommy John dedicated himself to Baseball and both embodies and personifies the very words of Commissioner Landis. Tommy John lived “the principles of baseball” over a 26 year professional baseball career, always demonstrating good sportsmanship and a team focused mind, ending his illustrious 26-year career which I’ll address below, with a “healthy body” by being a pioneer and risktaker as the first recipient of the career saving “Tommy John surgery”. Tommy John IS baseball, and he will forever be linked to Baseball for his career performance and his pioneer status for a surgery in which “five hundred or so major leaguers have had since 1974, with virtually all games — more than 85% — now involving at least one pitcher who has had the surgery.”ii As highlighted above, Tommy John had a highly successful Major League career spanning 26-years, 26 years (only Nolan Ryan, who is a member of the Hall of Fame, pitched more years than Tommy John), finishing his career at the age of 46 (oldest active MLB player that season) with a 288 win record - the third-most wins of anyone not in Cooperstown and as the all-time leader for "no- decisions".

With the 10 strikeouts, the D-backs pitching staff has now recorded at least 10 strikeouts in nine consecutive games to establish a new Major League record. The previous record of eight straight double-digit strikeout games was accomplished twice — by the Milwaukee Brewers from August 20-28, 2012, and by the Cleveland Indians from September 16-23, 2014. Arizona’s previous best was double-digit strikeouts in fi ve consecutive contests on three diff erent occasions (August 21-25, 2008; October 3, 2012-April 5, 2013; and April 16-20, 2016. Prior to yesterday’s 10-strikeout game, the D-backs had actually fanned at least 11 batters in the previous eight contests, which matched a Major League record set by Cleveland during their eight-game stretch in 2014. Arizona fanned 252 batters during the month of April, tied for the third-most in a single month in Club history, behind September/October 2015 (259) and August 2003 (256). The team also tallied 252 strikeouts in March/April 2014. Entering play today, the D-backs rank third in the Majors with 273 strikeouts, trailing only the Houston Astros (279) and the Los Angeles Dodg- ers (274). Tom was the youngest of four children and grew up on Arthur Avenue in Fresno, where his family were longtime members of the Sunnyside Country Club. Tom attended Fresno High School and pitched for the school’s baseball team, compensating for his lack of size and strength by developing great control on the mound. Seaver joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve on June 28, 1962 and served with the United States Aircraft, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, at Twentynine Palms, California, through July 1963. After six months of active duty in the reserve, he enrolled at Fresno City College and remained a part-time member of the reserve until his eight-year commitment ended in 1970. The University of Southern California (USC) recruited Seaver to play college baseball and offered him a scholarship after he pitched for the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks in the summer of 1964, during which he pitched and hit a grand slam to win a game in a national tournament.

    Two Babe Ruth Graduates Join Hall of Fame Class of 2015 Babe Ruth graduates Randy Johnson (Livermore, CA BRL) and John Smoltz (Lansing, MI BRL) were elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in a blockbuster vote by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Hall of Fame candidates needed 412 votes, or 75 percent of the 549 ballots cast by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Johnson, a five-time Cy Young Award winner with 303 victories and 4,875 strikeouts, was selected on 534 of the 549 ballots (97.3%). The percentage for the left-hander was the eighth highest in the history of voting. Smoltz, the 1996 NL Cy Young winner, the only pitcher with 200 wins and 150 saves, was picked on 455 ballots (82.9%). “The Hall of Fame was never something that I surely ever thought about,” said Johnson, who has been pursuing a photography career since his retirement. “I don’t think people quite understand how difficult it is to be 6-foot-10 and be throwing a ball 60 feet, 6inches away,” Johnson added. “In order to do that, you have to be consistent with your release point and where you’re landing and your arm slot and all that. For someone 6-1, 6-2, there’s less body to keep under control, so it’s a lot easier.” In 22 seasons (playing for six teams, primarily the Seattle Mariners and the Arizona Diamondbacks), Johnson led his league in strikeouts nine times, earned four ERA titles and recorded 100 complete games to go along with 37 shutouts.
