Shepherd Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii ABSTRACT SIBAL, KENNETH M., Ph.D., June 2011, Communication Studies The Organizational Life of the College Football Player: An Exploration of Injury, Football Culture, and Organizational Dialectics Director of Dissertation: Claudia L. Hale This dissertation attempts to better understand the lives of college football players. The project begins with the assumption that the ways individuals talk about their experiences have a significant impact on others. An organizational framework is used to appreciate the central importance of communication in coordinating organizational relationships and developing impressions. College football players were gathered from three separate institutions representing different competitive levels of college football. Through interviews, participants were invited to provide stories that reflected their understandings of what it means to play college football. Because the intent of this study was to better understand issues related to the culture of playing football, common themes were derived from those interviews in an attempt to answer four separate research questions.

MEDIA FRAMING OF FEMALE ATHLETES AND WOMEN’S SPORTS IN SELECTED SPORTS MAGAZINES by STACEY NICELY Under the Direction of Dr. Merrill Morris ABSTRACT In order to determine how female athletes and women’s sports are framed in sports magazines, a textual analysis was conducted on three popular sports magazines (ESPN Magazine, Sporting News, and Sports Illustrated). The researcher analyzed the texts within these three magazines and found four emergent themes commonly applied to women in sports: mental weakness, male reference, motherhood and sisterhood, and celebrity. The research found both consistencies and inconsistencies in the thematic framing utilized among the three publications. The textual analysis also revealed a tendency for the sports media to reference individual sports more than team sports. Knowing the exact frames utilized in these magazines, allows the researcher to suggest solutions that may alleviate the negative portrayals of female athletes and women’s sports in sports magazines.

  • Heroes and Rallies Baseball
Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.

  • Sexualization and Objectification of Female Athletes on Sport Magazine Covers: Improvement, Consistency, Or Decline?
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 7, No. 6, June 2017 Sexualization and Objectification of Female Athletes on Sport Magazine Covers: Improvement, Consistency, or Decline? Cynthia Frisby, Ph.D. University of Missouri School of Journalism 140B Walter Williams Columbia, MO 65211 United States Abstract A content analysis was conducted based on 109 photographs of female athletes found on the cover of two magazines popular among sports fans: Sports Illustrated and ESPN The Magazine. We were interested in determining the extent to which portrayals of female athletes have improved, stayed consistent, or decreased in the last five years. Building on prior research, analysis revealed that female athletes depicted on the covers of sports magazines are still being sexualized and objectified, depicted in seductive poses and scantily clad clothing while male athletes are often seen in their team uniforms depicted in active, game playing athletic motions associated or related to his sport (p < .0001). Statistically significant data led us to conclude that female athletes continue to be frequently sexualized and/or featured in ways that emphasize physical and bodily features, thus continuing to enhance cultural notions regarding gender roles and that female athletes are women first, athletes second. Keywords: Male and female athletes; Media sexualization of female athletes; sports journalism; mass media and athletes; depiction of female athletes; female athletes; coverage of female athletes 1. Introduction While several research studies find notable differences in the way female and male athletes are discussed in media coverage, the purpose of the present research is to determine the amount of progress in sports media in terms of the representation of female athletes.

By LISA SHEAFFER A THESIS PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN MASS COMMUNICATION UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2005 I would like to dedicate my thesis to my dad, who coached me as the first girl in a boy’s flag football league when I was 6 years old; to my mom, who made sure education was a top priority in my life; and to Michael, who stood by me throughout the entire thesis process and withstood my reply to “what’s your thesis about” more times then there are pages in this thesis. Thank you all. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my committee members (Ted Spiker; Debbie Treise; and especially my committee chair, Julie Dodd). I would also like to thank each of the five editors who participated in my study, for taking time out of their busy schedules to discuss the important issue of the women’s sports magazine niche. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS page ACKNOWLEDGMENTS ................................................................................................. iii ABSTRACT....................................................................................................................... vi CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION ........................................................................................................1 2 REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE ..............................................................................5 History of Women's Sports Magazines ........................................................................5
