SAARP SOCIAL SERVICES - PINELANDS (Reg No 2006/003084/08) E-mail Address : [email protected] Monthly Meetings: 3rd Thursday at Pinelands Bowling Club, St Stephen’s Rd. Doors open at 09:00, meeting closes 11:15 NEWSLETTER: SEPTEMBER 2019 Hello, again As I’ve been asked to include a number of items in this month’s newsletter, I’ll have to dispense with the usual chat and get down to business. Before I do, though, a quick look-back to last month’s meeting: There was a good turn-out for the Red Letter Day presentation by Colin Stevens, and from the comments I heard afterwards, many of you enjoyed it immensely. He’s apparently work- ing on another presentation, Mellow Yellow, which he has offered us for early next year – something unusual to look forward to in 2020. Our speaker for 19 September is a very interesting young lady, Dr Maria Jose, who will be explaining to us a process currently in practice to solve problems affecting communities. As she writes: "Design Thinking is a mindset, a process and a set of tools which seek to better understand problems from the perspectives of the humans that are most affected by it. This is the essence of Human-centered design thinking, and it relies on multi-disciplinary teams applying lateral thinking to identify the range of people affected and their experiences. This is different from the vertical thinking method of problem-solving which aims to understand the problem and then apply a known solution. Once identified, the individual and their experience is then re- framed by questioning current assumptions to act as a stimulus for new ideas which are then rapidly built and tested immediately.

Doors open at 09:00, meeting closes 11:15 NEWSLETTER : OCTOBER, NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2019 Dear Friends A bumper edition to cover the last quarter of the year! Amazing how quickly Time flies as we grow older, isn’t it? LOOKING BACK …. At our last meeting a very enterprising young lady, Dr Maria Jose, introduced us to her special field, Design Thinking – a new concept to me, although she said the principles were developed some 60-odd years ago (just shows I’m way behind the times!). I had undertaken to have our projector upgraded to enable it to be used with modern devices, and was so embarrassed to see her sitting there so patiently, waiting for our projector to link with her laptop; despite Juan’s strenuous efforts to get them to work in harmony with each other, Maria had to conduct her presentation solely with the mic and none of the graphic illustrations she had prepared. Nevertheless she charmed us with her interesting and entertaining address. Juan deserves our grateful thanks for his technical help, too. Cape Garden Centre/Schoongezicht: What a lovely outing our party of 34 enjoyed last week! The weather was perfect, the Garden Centre splendid with colourful displays of flowers in full bloom and the well-sculpted animals covered in Easi-Grass a real delight. And what can I say about the scrump- tious buffet that awaited us at Schoongezicht? Clive and I had never been there before, and were amazed at the variety of choice they had on offer.

  • In Stellenbosch a Guide To
A guide to in Stellenbosch 3 to Stellenbosch! Having received this booklet means that you, as a new postgraduate or international student or visitor, have arrived safely. At the Postgraduate and International Office, we aim to make your transition into your new environment, or your short stay in Stellenbosch, as trouble-free as possible. This booklet is one of the tools that we use to help you find your feet. It will provide you with information about Stellenbosch, the university and South Africa in general. When living in Stellenbosch, it is difficult to separate the university from the town. Nestled among picturesque mountains in the heart of the Cape Winelands, a large part of the town’s identity can be attributed to the presence of more than 19 000 resident students. This makes for a vibrant environment, alive with different cultures and activities. Stellenbosch University is recognised as one of the top four research universities in South Africa. It takes pride in the fact that proportionally, it has one of the country’s highest numbers of postgraduate students of which almost ten percent are international students. We have a significant role to play in the development of South Africa and our continent. We strive to achieve this through aligning our efforts with national priorities and in doing so, are helping to build the intellectual, scientific and technological capacity of Africa. As a student or visitor to our university, it is our hope that your stay here will be a pleasant and enriching experience, and that you will return to South Africa again.

Mr Mitchell will be taking up a position at an international school in Zanzibar. Although he has been at Camps Bay Primary for a relatively short period, we thank him for his positive contribution to the school and wish him well on his new venture and in his new teaching position. NETBALL TOUR TO KNYSNA: On the weekend of the 27th April, the U13 netball girls went on tour to Knysna to play in the annual sports festival. The competition was very stiff, with the majority of the teams participating from the Northern Suburbs, as well as the Eastern Cape. The girls played ten matches over the three days, winning five of them, drawing one and losing only four games! This is a phenomenal result and we are VERY proud of the girls. They visited the Knysna Elephant Park to learn about elephants, as well as to feed them. The girls also went Acrobranching and had fun swinging through the trees. The CBPS girls received a lot of positive comments on tour and were fantastic ambassadors for the school, flying the CBPS flag high. Thank you to Ms Selepe (team manager) for all the hours of planning and organising as well as for giving your personal time to chaperone the girls on tour.
