Mr Mitchell will be taking up a position at an international school in Zanzibar. Although he has been at Camps Bay Primary for a relatively short period, we thank him for his positive contribution to the school and wish him well on his new venture and in his new teaching position. NETBALL TOUR TO KNYSNA: On the weekend of the 27th April, the U13 netball girls went on tour to Knysna to play in the annual sports festival. The competition was very stiff, with the majority of the teams participating from the Northern Suburbs, as well as the Eastern Cape. The girls played ten matches over the three days, winning five of them, drawing one and losing only four games! This is a phenomenal result and we are VERY proud of the girls. They visited the Knysna Elephant Park to learn about elephants, as well as to feed them. The girls also went Acrobranching and had fun swinging through the trees. The CBPS girls received a lot of positive comments on tour and were fantastic ambassadors for the school, flying the CBPS flag high. Thank you to Ms Selepe (team manager) for all the hours of planning and organising as well as for giving your personal time to chaperone the girls on tour. Thank you to Mrs Kirsten for driving the bus safely on the long journey to and from Knysna. Thank you to Gillian Monteverdi for coaching the girls as well as for accompanying the girls on tour. Lastly thank you to all the parents who assisted with fundraising for the tour. I have no doubt the girls have wonderful, treasured memories and had a most enjoyable time. See pics below. FOUNDERS’ DAY: Last week on Friday we enjoyed a wonderful celebration of our birthday of 113 years of delivering quality education at the Camps Bay Schools. The morning started with the Prep Founders’ Day assembly which was addressed by Hannah Barnes (Head Prefect) and matric students of CBHS on memories of when they were at the Prep school. Camps Bay Primary was addressed by past pupil Dexter Tangocci who has started his own drone business and the children enjoyed seeing a drone in action! Another highlight of the assembly was the slide-show presentation (prepared by Mrs Jessica Abrahams) on how the school has changed, past and present CBPS, showing all the improvements over the years. Thank you to the Music Department, Ms Attwell and Mrs Abrahams as well as the Junior Choir, Luke Aberdein (piano), Isabelle Bruce (vocals), Frida Waddell & Chloe Martin (vocals duet) and the wind- band for fine performances at the assembly. The children on both campuses received a cupcake decorated with 113 on them to celebrate our birthday! The day ended with the Founders’ Day assembly at CBHS. TIME FOR A LAUGH: All Camps Bay Prep and Primary parents and friends are invited to an exclusive fundraising evening with Marc Lottering on Wednesday 12 June at The Theatre on the Bay. Creating a historical sport narrative of Zonnebloem College for classroom practice, pp . 71-104 Creating a historical sport narrative of Zonnebloem College for classroom practice DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/2223-0386/2020/n23a4 Francois Cleophas University of Stellenbosch Stellenbosch, South Africa [email protected] ORCID No.: orcid.org/0000-0002-1492-3792 Abstract This article attempts to create a sport narrative of the Zonnebloem College prior to 1950. The introduction provides a motivation for proceeding with a decolonising format and lays out what the elements of such a format would entail. Next, an overview of sport historical developments at the Zonnebloem College is explored. The administrative history of sport at Zonnebloem is explored as well as selected sport codes. Finally, the article is summarised and concluded by presenting teachers and learners with sample questions, which they could consider using in their local conditions. Keywords: Athletics; Netball; Soccer; Decolonisation; Institutional Culture; Past Student's Union; Zonnebloem. Introduction According to the sport historian, André Odendaal, at the centre of South African sport history must be the effort to understand how the silences of the colonial subject in sport are manipulated and how colonial narratives are set in the literature and minds of South Africans – and to attempt to redress the situation (Odendaal 2018:1). One example of the silence on black school sport is the publication, Some famous schools. It is a 279- page work that is dedicated to “teachers, pupils, old boys, parents and the local public that [came from] schools founded on the Arnoldian ideal” (Peacock 1972: Editor’s Note).

Doors open at 09:00, meeting closes 11:15 NEWSLETTER: SEPTEMBER 2019 Hello, again As I’ve been asked to include a number of items in this month’s newsletter, I’ll have to dispense with the usual chat and get down to business. Before I do, though, a quick look-back to last month’s meeting: There was a good turn-out for the Red Letter Day presentation by Colin Stevens, and from the comments I heard afterwards, many of you enjoyed it immensely. He’s apparently work- ing on another presentation, Mellow Yellow, which he has offered us for early next year – something unusual to look forward to in 2020. Our speaker for 19 September is a very interesting young lady, Dr Maria Jose, who will be explaining to us a process currently in practice to solve problems affecting communities. As she writes: "Design Thinking is a mindset, a process and a set of tools which seek to better understand problems from the perspectives of the humans that are most affected by it. This is the essence of Human-centered design thinking, and it relies on multi-disciplinary teams applying lateral thinking to identify the range of people affected and their experiences. This is different from the vertical thinking method of problem-solving which aims to understand the problem and then apply a known solution. Once identified, the individual and their experience is then re- framed by questioning current assumptions to act as a stimulus for new ideas which are then rapidly built and tested immediately.

Amazing how quickly Time flies as we grow older, isn’t it? LOOKING BACK …. At our last meeting a very enterprising young lady, Dr Maria Jose, introduced us to her special field, Design Thinking – a new concept to me, although she said the principles were developed some 60-odd years ago (just shows I’m way behind the times!). I had undertaken to have our projector upgraded to enable it to be used with modern devices, and was so embarrassed to see her sitting there so patiently, waiting for our projector to link with her laptop; despite Juan’s strenuous efforts to get them to work in harmony with each other, Maria had to conduct her presentation solely with the mic and none of the graphic illustrations she had prepared. Nevertheless she charmed us with her interesting and entertaining address. Juan deserves our grateful thanks for his technical help, too. Cape Garden Centre/Schoongezicht: What a lovely outing our party of 34 enjoyed last week! The weather was perfect, the Garden Centre splendid with colourful displays of flowers in full bloom and the well-sculpted animals covered in Easi-Grass a real delight. And what can I say about the scrump- tious buffet that awaited us at Schoongezicht? Clive and I had never been there before, and were amazed at the variety of choice they had on offer.

At the Postgraduate and International Office, we aim to make your transition into your new environment, or your short stay in Stellenbosch, as trouble-free as possible. This booklet is one of the tools that we use to help you find your feet. It will provide you with information about Stellenbosch, the university and South Africa in general. When living in Stellenbosch, it is difficult to separate the university from the town. Nestled among picturesque mountains in the heart of the Cape Winelands, a large part of the town’s identity can be attributed to the presence of more than 19 000 resident students. This makes for a vibrant environment, alive with different cultures and activities. Stellenbosch University is recognised as one of the top four research universities in South Africa. It takes pride in the fact that proportionally, it has one of the country’s highest numbers of postgraduate students of which almost ten percent are international students. We have a significant role to play in the development of South Africa and our continent. We strive to achieve this through aligning our efforts with national priorities and in doing so, are helping to build the intellectual, scientific and technological capacity of Africa. As a student or visitor to our university, it is our hope that your stay here will be a pleasant and enriching experience, and that you will return to South Africa again.
