Clinical manifestations vary and are classified as visceral larva migrans or ocular larva migrans according to the organs affected. Central nervous system involvement is an unusual complication. Here, we report a case of multiple cerebral infarction and concurrent multi-organ involvement due to T. canis infestation of a previous healthy 39-year- old male who was admitted for right leg weakness. After treatment with albendazole, the patient’s clinical and laboratory results improved markedly. The effect of introduced infectious disease on wildlife populations is particularly pronounced on islands where parasite populations are characterised by increased intensity, infra-community richness and prevalence (the “Island Syndrome”). This thesis studied parasite and bacterial pathogens of conservation and zoonotic importance in feral cats from two islands (Christmas Island, Dirk Hartog Island) and one mainland location (southwest Western Australia), and in black rats from Christmas Island. The general hypothesis tested was that Island Syndrome increases the risk of transmission of parasitic and bacterial diseases introduced/harboured by cats and rats to wildlife and human communities. -

Increasing infection rates of this neglected tropical disease are leading to negative economic and public health consequences in affected regions. Experimental and epidemiological studies have shown a strong association between the incidence of cholangiocarcinoma and the infection rate of C. sinensis. To aid research into this organism, we have sequenced its genome. Results: We combined de novo sequencing with computational techniques to provide new information about the biology of this liver fluke. The assembled genome has a total size of 516 Mb with a scaffold N50 length of 42 kb. Approximately 16,000 reliable protein-coding gene models were predicted. Genes for the complete pathways for glycolysis, the Krebs cycle and fatty acid metabolism were found, but key genes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis are missing from the genome, reflecting the parasitic lifestyle of a liver fluke that receives lipids from the bile of its host. We also identified pathogenic molecules that may contribute to liver fluke-induced hepatobiliary diseases. -

Alvarez Rojas1*, Fernando Fredes2, Marisa Torres3, Gerardo Acosta-Jamett4, Juan Francisco Alvarez5, Carlos Pavletic6, Rodolfo Paredes7* and Sandra Cortés3,8 Abstract This report summarizes the outcomes of a meeting on cystic echinococcosis (CE) in animals and humans in Chile held in Santiago, Chile, between the 21st and 22nd of January 2016. The meeting participants included representatives of the Departamento de Zoonosis, Ministerio de Salud (Zoonotic Diseases Department, Ministry of Health), representatives of the Secretarias Regionales del Ministerio de Salud (Regional Department of Health, Ministry of Health), Instituto Nacional de Desarrollo Agropecuario (National Institute for the Development of Agriculture and Livestock, INDAP), Instituto de Salud Pública (National Institute for Public Health, ISP) and the Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero (Animal Health Department, SAG), academics from various universities, veterinarians and physicians. Current and future CE control activities were discussed. It was noted that the EG95 vaccine was being implemented for the first time in pilot control programmes, with the vaccine scheduled during 2016 in two different regions in the South of Chile. In relation to use of the vaccine, the need was highlighted for acquiring good quality data, based on CE findings at slaughterhouse, previous to initiation of vaccination so as to enable correct assessment of the efficacy of the vaccine in the following years. The current world’s-best-practice concerning the use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool for the screening population in highly endemic remote and poor areas was also discussed. -

ABSTRAKT Za účelem studia parazitických hlístic ryb Senegalu bylo v letech 2004 – 2006 vyšetřeno 330 jedinců náležejících ke 49 sladkovodním druhům ryb. Většina vyšetřených ryb pocházela z národního parku Nikolo Koba ve východním Senegalu. Celkem byly determinovány 3 rody parazitických hlístic ve 24 druzích ryb (prevalence 71%) z 9 čeledí. Nalezená fauna hlístic se skládala většinou ze zástupců čeledi Camallanidae. -

SUMMARY: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or Agency), in response to suggestions submitted to the public docket FDA-2008-N-0567, between June 20, 2018, and November 21, 2018, has analyzed whether the foodborne trematode infection clonorchiasis meets the statutory criteria for designation as a “tropical disease” for the purposes of obtaining a priority review voucher (PRV) under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), namely whether it primarily affects poor and marginalized populations and whether there is “no significant market” for drugs that prevent or treat clonorchiasis in developed countries. The Agency has determined at this time that clonorchiasis does not meet the statutory criteria for addition to the tropical diseases list under the FD&C Act. Although clonorchiasis disproportionately affects poor and marginalized populations, it is an infectious disease for which there is a significant market in developed nations; therefore, FDA declines to add it to the list of tropical diseases.
