The Fountain September 2020 THE FOUNTAIN The Parish Magazine serving the communities of the Fountains Group, Aldfield Sawley & Winksley (Fountains Parish), Azerley, Dallowgill, Galphay, Grantley, Grewelthorpe, Kirkby Malzeard, Laverton, Mickley & Studley 50p The Rectory Kirkby Malzeard, Ripon HG4 3SL Dear Friends, We are living in strange times and it seems to me that we are only surviving at all because most people at every level of society are exercising two qualities which are fundamental to the Christian way of life, charity and trust, and it is about trust that I write today. Again, and again in Scripture we read about people who have trusted in Our Lord against the odds and apparently even against reason. In the Old Testament God asks Abraham to leave his home and set off towards an unspecified destination. Isiah responds to God`s call to do he knows not what with "Here am I. Send me." The New Testament, from beginning to end, is the story of people who trusted in God and did what He asked without question, from Mary through the disciples who left their nets to follow Christ, to Christ Himself of whom His enemies said "He trusted in God". 1 Is that our response to the situation in which we find ourselves today? Are we able to go forward into an unpredictably dangerous future with absolute certainty that we can trust in God? It would be idle to pretend that the future will not hold suffering and tragedy on an unprecedented scale, but in spite of all that, can it be said of us that we trust in God? Can we go forward from day to day somehow finding strength from God to face whatever comes? I believe that we can if we trust in God that He will deliver us. Can we honestly reply, to the question in the Baptism Service "Do you believe and trust in God?" "I believe and trust in Him?" If we can say these words and really mean then we have nothing to fear. I pray for us all that we may, by The Lord`s grace do just that. Harvest Weekend We will have a harvest service for the whole benefice at 2 pm on Saturday 26th September. This will take place in the churchyard at Kirkby Malzeard – the church is big enough to allow us to retreat there and maintain suitable distancing should the weather turn nasty! Please bring an item which can be passed on to the Food Bank, rather than traditional harvest produce. There will also be a harvest theme to our services on Zoom and at home on Sunday 27th. Building faith It’s good to get into a healthy routine of spiritual development. We each have rhythms of loving, living and learning, and as Christians we believe that Christ should be at the heart of this. There are two initiatives at the moment to help us. Rhythm of Life involves taking stock of where we are now, making one or more practical commitments, participating with others if wished and reviewing our commitments periodically. It is very flexible. To give it a go, visit https://learning.leeds.anglican.org/RoL/ For a brief, twice-daily form of prayer and Bible reading, the Church of England has produced a booklet called Time to Pray, which is very helpful. It 3 includes the service of Night Prayer, which is a comforting and calming way to draw the day to a close. Copies are available from Ian Kitchen. Annual Church Meetings The annual meetings for Fountains parish will be held on 28th September at 7.30. Due to the coronavirus restrictions we are not yet certain of the venue, but it will be advertised. Nomination forms are required beforehand for churchwardens. The other parish annual meetings will be on 5th October for Kirkby Malzeard with Dallowgill, 7th October for Grewelthorpe, and 28th October for Mickley. Worship with us At the moment we are still sharing in a service of Morning Worship each week at 10.00 am, using the video-conferencing tool Zoom. If you'd like to join us, please contact Rev Ian Kitchen for more information ([email protected]). Even if you haven't used Zoom before, it isn't difficult and Ian will be able to help you sort it out. If you are not computer-savvy or you'd rather follow a service on your own we can let you have it via email or by paper through your letter box. A growing band of people are doing this at 10 am each week to build the sense that we are all worshipping together. Email or telephone Ian for more details: 01765 650369. Bible study We are running a Bible study group by Zoom on Wednesday evenings from 7.30. If you’d like to join us, or would be interested in a similar study at another time, let Ian know. Methodist Services Introduction to Ian Pruden I wanted to write a short note to say hello, as this month I’m beginning a new appointment as the minister for the Methodist Church in Dallowgill, Grewelthorpe, Kirkby Malzeard and Sawley (and four other places!) I’m very happy to be coming to a beautiful part of North Yorkshire after a long spell in the South East and most recently in East Anglia in the Fens. I am a passionate ecumenist and rural practitioner, and I love and understand rural villages. From our couple of visits and from reading village websites, it’s clear the villages your Parish cover are vibrant communities. I look forward to getting involved in events over the next few years. I’m married to Lis (who is an Anglican) and we have six cats and no children! We will be living in Ripon. We both love meeting people. Of course, beginning a new appointment in a pandemic will be interesting. I’m planning lots of pastoral getting to know you meetings in gardens. I look forward to meeting many of you soon, 5 Ian Pruden The Methodist Church in Kirkby Malzeard will reopen for worship on 13th September at 10.30 am when a short half hour service will be led by the members. The next service will be on the 27th September. The Benefice Book Group This month we have read "A Gentleman in Moscow" by Amor Towles and readers have reacted very strongly both for and against. Those who didn`t enjoy it had no sympathy with any of the characters and thought the plot too long and unnecessarily complex. Those who loved it found the characters well drawn and sympathetic especially The Count (the central character) and the plot fascinating with lots of unexpected twists and turns and plenty of amusing incidents and details So, would we, as a group, recommend it? As with most novels it`s a case of "suck it and see". Try it for yourself. You`ll know within a few pages whether or not you want to go on. We are now reading “The Shell Seekers" by Rosamunde Pilcher.     CASTLE HOWARD MAUSOLEUM Castle Howard Estate, Ryedale, North Yorkshire The Mausoleum, by Hawksmoor, 1729-42, and modelled on the tomb of Metella, is a major feature of the Howardian Hills. Situated on a bluff east of Castle Howard. The columns were repaired with a grant in the 1980s. The entablature and bastions continue to decay. Much of the damage is due to rusting cramps. The staircase balustrade is collapsing. 304 HERITAGE AT RISK YORKSHIRE & THE HUMBER 305 Y&H HERITAGE AT RISK 2008 Of the 176 entries on the baseline 1999 Yorkshire and the Humber buildings at risk register, 91(52%) have now been removed. Although this is 6% higher than the regional average for 2008, our rate of progress is slowing. Of the five entries removed this year, only one was on the 1999 register. This is because the core of buildings remaining from the 1999 register are either scheduled monuments with no obvious use, or buildings with a problematic future that require a strategic re-think to provide a viable solution. Despite these problems, we are continuing to work with owners, local authorities, trusts and other funding bodies to try to secure the long-term future of these buildings and structures. Just over half (52%) of the regional grants budget (almost £500,000) was offered to eleven buildings at risk in the last financial year. There are four new entries this year: in North Yorkshire, St Leonard’s Church at Sand Hutton, and in West Yorkshire, Hopton Congregational Church in Mirfield,Westwood Mills at Linthwaite, and Stank Hall near Leeds.This gives a total of 122 Grade I and II* listed buildings and scheduled monuments at risk entries on the Yorkshire and the Humber register.

    0 R STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS 2000 No. 2601 LOCAL GOVERNMENT, ENGLAND The Borough of Harrogate (Electoral Changes) Order 2000 Made---- 22nd September 2000 Coming into force in accordance with article 1(2) to (4) Whereas the Local Government Commission for England, acting pursuant to section 15(4) of the Local Government Act 1992(a), has submitted to the Secretary of State a report dated November 1999 on its review of the borough(b) of Harrogate together with its recommendations: And whereas the Secretary of State has decided to give effect, subject to one modification, to those recommendations: Now, therefore, the Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 17(c) and 26 of the Local Government Act 1992, and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order: Citation, commencement and interpretation 1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Borough of Harrogate (Electoral Changes) Order 2000.
