  • LIVES of the ENGINEERS. the LOCOMOTIVE
LIVES of the ENGINEERS. THE LOCOMOTIVE. GEORGE AND ROBERT STEPHENSON. BY SAMUEL SMILES, INTRODUCTION. Since the appearance of this book in its original form, some seventeen years since, the construction of Railways has continued to make extraordinary progress. Although Great Britain, first in the field, had then, after about twenty-five years‘ work, expended nearly 300 millions sterling in the construction of 8300 miles of railway, it has, during the last seventeen years, expended about 288 millions more in constructing 7780 additional miles. But the construction of railways has proceeded with equal rapidity on the Continent. France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, Holland, have largely added to their railway mileage. Austria is actively engaged in carrying new lines across the plains of Hungary, which Turkey is preparing to meet by lines carried up the valley of the Lower Danube. Russia is also occupied with extensive schemes for connecting Petersburg and Moscow with her ports in the Black Sea on the one hand, and with the frontier towns of her Asiatic empire on the other. Italy is employing her new-born liberty in vigorously extending railways throughout her dominions. A direct line of communication has already been opened between France and Italy, through the Mont Cenis Tunnel; while p. ivanother has been opened between Germany and Italy through the Brenner Pass,—so that the entire journey may now be made by two different railway routes excepting only the short sea-passage across the English Channel from London to Brindisi, situated in the south-eastern extremity of the Italian peninsula. During the last sixteen years, nearly the whole of the Indian railways have been made.

Young Persons’ Question Time 16 October 2014 Report Photo: The Panel (l-r) Cllr Gary Bell, Dean Titterton, Cllr David Lilly, Adrian Pitches, Norma Redfearn, Chief Inspector Steve Readdie and Wendy Burke. On Thursday 16 October students from five of the borough's middle and high schools quizzed a panel of politicians and other decision makers during a lively and entertaining two-hour long debate which followed the format of the BBC's 'Question Time' programme. The well-attended event was hosted and chaired by BBC Look North's Adrian Pitches, and formed part of North Tyneside Council's work to mark this year's Local Democracy Week (13 - 19 October 2014). Young people had been asked to submit their questions on any topic of their choosing and the Chairman of the Council, Councillor Tommy Mulvenna, and the Head of Law and Governance, Vivienne Geary, selected nine to be answered on the day by the panel. A fantastic 66 questions from young people at schools across the borough were submitted and included questions on young people hanging around public areas; schools having the same start and finish times; Whitley Bay Regeneration; development (fracking, house building, developments & demolitions), tuition fees and jobs and opportunities for 16-24 year olds. Young people aged between 10 and 17 asked their own questions on the day and students from Churchill Community College, George Stephenson High School, Kings Priory School, Marden High School, Norham High School, Seaton Burn Community College and Valley Gardens Middle School all attended the event, which was filmed for broadcast by Marden High School's media team.

The policy objectives for North Shields were agreed by Cabinet in April 2019 and these included: A smaller but more vibrant and connected, high quality town centre; create a smaller, more vibrant and connected town centre which combines living, working and retail with a place that becomes a destination in its own right; A connected and vibrant Fish Quay; which supports a developing food and drink offer and a working quay but builds on the Fish Quay’s increasing popularity as a destination exploring heritage, cycling, the connections to South Shields as well as the popular night time and weekend economy; Better transport flows and connectivity; making sure traffic flows more effectively, that the Metro Station is connected to the rest of the town, that pedestrians and cyclists can move easily between the town centre and the Fish Quay with an opportunity for something eye-catching to make that possible; and A better quality built environment; learning from recent projects, and setting high design and material standards for our work.

I am particularly indebted to the staff of the Home Office Drugs Prevention Advisory Service, particularly Robert Martin Government Office for the North East and Deborah Burns and Karen Kirkbride, for their continuous support, advice and encouragement. Veena Soni Diversity Advisor Drugs Prevention Advisory Service 1 Ethnicity in the Foreword by Angela Eagle North East The Home Office has committed itself to promoting race equality, particularly in the provision of public services such as education, health, law and order, housing and local government; and achieve representative workforces in its services areas. We are also working hard to promote cohesive communities and deal with the issues that cause segregation in communities. One of the Home OfficeÕs seven main aims is to support strong and active communities in which people of all races and backgrounds are valued and participate on equal terms by developing social policy to build a fair, prosperous and cohesive society in which everyone has a stake. To work with other departments and local government agencies and community groups to regenerate neighbourhoods, to support families; to develop the potential of every individual; to build the confidence and capacity of the whole community to be part of the solution; and to promote good race and community relations, combating prejudice and xenophobia. To promote equal opportunities both within the Home Office and more widely and to ensure that active citizenship contributes to the enhancement of democracy and the development of civil society.

Foreword I have great pleasure in submitting an application for the Neighbourhood Planning Vanguards scheme on behalf of the Fish Quay Heritage Partnership. The community of the Fish Quay has a strong and successful history of taking a pro- active approach within partnerships to regeneration their area. The community’s passion and commitment to their area has brought about great improvements to the Fish Quay and I am confident that they will continue to thrive and bring about further positive change if given the opportunity to participate in their Neighbourhood Planning Vanguards scheme.
