WKUWKU MENSMENS BASKETBALLBASKETBALL Magley have had productive minutes off the bench toward the end in the NCAA Tournament! of the season. in the NCAA Tournament! Why WESTERN wins: Western gets solid contributions from its forwards to complement what the guards do. Western also needs to push the game to a tempo where its comfortable. Why WESTERN loses: Illinois’ defense lives up to its billing and completely takes Western out of its offensive rhythm. X-Factor: Senior guard Orlando Mendez-Valdez. He’s been the definition of leader all season, and when it matters most he puts Western on his back. Match-up to watch: Western junior forward Jeremy Evans vs. Illinois sophomore center Mike Tisdale. SCENE IN BOWLING GREEN Business booms with Tops away Restaurants, University Bookstore prepare for crowds as NCAA tournament tips-off

JONATHAN LINTNER [email protected]

Two time zones and 2,300 miles away, Illinois and Western will tip- off at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore., tonight. Left at home are legions of Hilltopper fans unable to make the cross- country trip on four days notice in tough economic times. Being far away from the action won’t keep the Western faithful from gathering. “A big Western crowd will be in here,” Buffalo Wild Wings manager Jessica Ebelhar/Herald Ronny Rhodes said. Seniors Katie Williams of Henderson, Lynlea Martin of Horse Cave and Danielle Bruno of Director of Alumni Programming Ginny Hensley said that Western Hendersonville, Tenn., celebrate Western’s buzzer beating victory against Drake in the first round of the alumni chapters across the country will be gathering in organized spots 2008 NCAA tournament. The win advanced the Hilltoppers in the tournament, where they ultimately lost to to watch the game. She said the Warren County chapter will gather at Double Dogs in UCLA in the Sweet Sixteen. Bowling Green. “This one is fun,” Hensley said. “Last year over a two-week period, we had about 100 different events going on across the country during the tournament.” According to the alumni association’s Web site, there are six organized gatherings for chapters. They’re happening as close as Warren County and as far away as Washington, D.C. Hensley said there isn’t a chapter in the Portland area. Double Dogs General Manager Matt Ellis said that during last year’s tournament, the restaurant was often near capacity, and said it’s increasing its staff this year. The common theme among local sports bars will play to the longer days and higher temperatures. Froggy’s Pizza will have all its decks open, and Buffalo Wild Wings has a new remodeled patio for the latest round of March Madness. It’s a goal for both establishments to show every game but retain focus on the hometown crowd. Western’s trip to the Sweet Sixteen was a shocker last season, and something many businesses weren’t ready to handle. “The first game really caught us off guard but we were ready for the second one,” Froggy’s manager Denny Montgomery said. “We really wanted them to go further.” More people means more servers, at least for Rhodes. He expects to double his servers and bring in four extra cooks to supplement the madness. And the fans in the seats? They’ll all be donned in some new Western gear from the University Bookstore. There’s “definitely a little bit of a buzz in the air,” Jim Sears, assistant director of the University Bookstore, said. Sears said he’s gearing up for multiple wins and a return visit to the Sweet Sixteen for Western. Shirt designs are ready, and after selling 4,000 in less than two hours last year, they’ll be ordered as soon as the final whistle blows on a would-be second-round victory. Like many across the country, Sears doesn’t plan on being caught off guard by the Hilltoppers making a run in March. Not again.
