THOMPSON SIGNS FIRST PRO CONTRACT IN THE NETHERLANDS BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Former WKU Basketball guard Darius Thompson has inked his first professional contract, signing with Zorg en Zekerheid Basketball Leiden in the Netherlands. ZZ Leiden competes in the Dutch Basketball League. The team has won the national championship three times, the NBB Cup twice and the Dutch Basketball Supercup twice. Thompson, a 6-foot-4 guard from Murfreesboro, Tenn., joined the Hilltoppers for the 2017-18 season as a graduate transfer from Virginia. He left his mark on the program in just one year, starting all 38 games, averaging 35.6 minutes per contest and earning a spot on the All-Conference USA Second Team. Thompson averaged 13.6 points, 4.8 assists and 4.2 rebounds for WKU, while netting a team- high 54 made 3-pointers.

Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed. A six-year NBA veteran, Evans spent 2010-15 with the Utah Jazz, the 2015-16 season with the Dallas Mavericks and last year with Khimki (Russia). The 2012 NBA slam dunk contest champion, Evans has appeared in 249 career regular season games (nine starts), averaging 3.5 points and 2.6 rebounds in 10.5 minutes (.568 FG%). He’s also spent time with Utah and Texas in the NBA G League. Evans, a 6’9 forward, was originally selected in the second round (55 th overall) of the 2010 NBA Draft by Utah after a four-year career at Western Kentucky. Evans will wear jersey No. 22. Mathews, who played three years at California before transferring to Gonzaga for his senior season, averaged 10.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 28.0 minutes (39 games, all starts) in 2016-17, helping lead the Zags to the National Championship game. His 85 three-pointers made last year tied for the seventh-highest single-season total in school history. In three years at Cal (2013-16), the 6’4 guard appeared in 102 games (63 starting assignments) and put in 11.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 26.6 minutes.

That number of former NBA D-Leaguers on NBA opening day rosters surpasses the previous highs of 63 the previous two seasons. In just five years, the number of former NBA D-League players on NBA start-of-season rosters has more than doubled, going from 35 on opening day in 2006- 07 to 88 today. Twenty-nine of 30 NBA teams feature at least one player with NBA D-League experience, while the Cleveland Cavaliers and Houston Rockets each have six former NBA D-Leaguers on their respective rosters. Dennis Horner, a 6-9 forward out of N.C. State, made the New Jersey Nets in the same year in which he signed up to participate in the 2011 NBA D-League Boost Mobile National Tryout last June in Louisville, KY. He was selected by the Springfield Armor in the third round (47 th overall) in the 2011 NBA D-League Draft Presented by Cisco. Horner was selected by the Nets, the Armor’s affiliate, to participate in the teams 2011 NBA training camp after averaging 15.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game in Springfield. Of the 88 former NBA D-League players in the NBA, eleven are earning a Gatorade Call-Up as the NBA begins the 2011-12 NBA season having played in the NBA D-League earlier this season.
