PHOTO RELEASE Billy Bishop Airport Airfield Rehabilitation Project Marks Important Milestone PHOTO RELEASE Billy Bishop Airport Airfield Rehabilitation Project Marks Important Milestone Toronto (November 3, 2016) – Today, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (Billy Bishop Airport) officially re-opened runway 06-24 following an extensive rehabilitation of the runway earlier this summer. Billy Bishop Airport’s Executive Vice-President Gene Cabral was joined by representatives from Porter Airlines, Greater Toronto Airways, Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA), Toronto Island Pilot’s Association (TIPA), WSP Canada Inc. and Pave-Al Limited to participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the major milestone in the Billy Bishop Airfield Rehabilitation Project – the resurfacing of runway 08-26 and the full reconstruction of runway 06-24. This significant three-year rehabilitation initiative which began earlier this summer is necessary to replace existing aging civil and electrical infrastructure to modernize the airport. This work also includes replacing the runway lighting to energy-efficient LED lighting, restoration of the runway and reconfiguring taxiways. “After a summer of intensive construction to restore and repave the runways at Billy Bishop Airport I am pleased to come together with representatives of our airport community to celebrate this major milestone in the project,” said Gene Cabral, Executive Vice-President of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and PortsToronto. “These initiatives to modernize the airport will ensure it continues to serve as an economic engine for the city, provide much needed aviation service and provide efficient service to the 2.5 million passengers who travel through the airport each year.” Special procedures such as the barging of materials and supplies were implemented to ensure minimal impacts on local residents as well as travellers. Additionally, given that a portion of construction activities took place during night-time hours when the airport is closed to air traffic, PortsToronto implemented a number of measures to minimize the community impact, including limitations on construction vehicle access and construction-related noise, as well as directing construction lighting downward and away from neighbourhoods. Under the leadership of our governments, we agreed to implement tough decisions to protect our health and safety. We shut down our schools, our businesses, and our borders. We all made sacrifices and continue to adapt to this new reality. Now, it seems, we are getting through the worst of it. As we re-open, we are learning to live with the virus, not hide from it or from each other. And, just like we are re-opening the front doors of our homes and businesses, we need to re-open the doors of our provinces, territories – and our country. The Canadian travel, tourism and hospitality sector employs 1.8 million people and contributes $102 billion to our economy. It relies on the summer season to survive. As Canadians, we wait all year to travel during the summer. We need the summer. Like you, we believe personal safety is critical. However, many of the travel restrictions currently in place are simply too broad or unnecessary. Limitations on inter-provincial travel that restrict Canadians from freely exploring our country, should be removed. Canadians should be free to travel across Canada. We also need a more targeted approach to international travel. The mandatory 14-day quarantine and complete closure of our country to all visitors from abroad is no longer necessary and is out of step with other countries across the globe.

The historic Toronto Harbour Commission building, which currently serves as headquarters for PortsToronto and is located on the site along with a surface parking lot, will be restored and maintained as part of any future development plan. The sale closed today and the transaction is valued at $96 million, a portion of which will be payable over the next three years. The proceeds from this sale will be used to support PortsToronto’s federal mandate to manage operations on a self-sustaining basis in order to reinvest funds into marine safety, environmental protection, community programming, and transportation infrastructure. The federal Minister of Transport has granted an amendment to PortsToronto’s Letters Patent to enable the sale to close. “The South Core is a burgeoning area for business and residential development in Toronto given its optimal location, public transit access and amenities,” said Robert Poirier, Chair of the Board, PortsToronto. “We are pleased that this sale will provide for future opportunities that will improve utilization of the property which is consistent with PortsToronto’s federal mandate and governing Letters Patent.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s my pleasure to be with you this morning. I greatly appreciate this opportunity to address the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal …the voice of commerce for one of Canada’s most important cities and a cornerstone Porter Airlines destination. As you heard earlier, just two days ago we celebrated the first anniversary of our inaugural flight to Ottawa. In a matter of a few weeks we’ll celebrate the first anniversary of the implementation of our Montreal service. It’s been an exhilarating first year and we couldn’t be more pleased about how much progress we have made in such a short time period. I am especially gratified by the role Porter has played in helping build further economic ties between Toronto and Montreal. The amount of trade in goods and services between Quebec and Ontario is close to $70 billion each year based on recent numbers. This is more than occurs between some smaller nations. Our geographic proximity encourages doing business face to face and, in so doing, strengthens the ties between Canada’s two major centers…and its two major cultures. I take pride in knowing Porter has done its part by making the relationship more convenient, enjoyable and productive. The Montreal-Toronto route is the second busiest by passenger volume in Canada. On any given weekday, there are at least 39 scheduled round-trip flights available between the two cities.

The next generation of environmental leaders – our “Generation Now”– are faced with some rather dismaying environmental and human health challenges. Whether it be greenhouse gas emissions, contamination of air and water, or modernization of our energy systems in Canada; the legacy that they inherit from our generation (and generations past) – is not an easy one to take on. But tonight underscores why there is still great reason for optimism. After a day of discussion and brainstorming, we’re going to hear the results of the innovation forum held in collaboration with “Student Energy”, a group of bright, dedicated students creating the next generation of energy leaders committed to transitioning the world to a sustainable future. Don’t be surprised if they manage to crack a few tough problems before we even get to dinner! You’ll also meet our Generation Now award winners, who represent the smart, enthusiastic and innovative young people ready to dive in and start saving the world - literally. You’ll learn about the amazing solutions that they’ve already developed. Pollution Probe was formed in 1969, a year before I was born. As I take the helm from the generations of leaders who have preceded me, I am grateful and reassured by the enormous potential in those who will come after.
