Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds uwww.rareseeds.com 2013 Pure Seed Book Dear Gardening Friends, We are excited to bring you our 15th annual seed catalog, the largest and we hope the best yet. This year it contains 212 pages and 1450 varieties of rare and unique vegetables, flowers and herbs from over 70 countries, bringing you the largest selection of heirloom varieties offered in the Ameri- cas and probably the most diverse collection of ed- ibles on the planet. It is our goal to preserve these unique genetic treasures: seeds that have been passed down through the generations, savored, saved and honored as part of each culture. They tell a still-living story of a culinary and horticultural past. This is a past that is filled with amazing seeds and stories—stories that are just as colorful as the fragrant flowers and vintage vegetables that are now filling our gardens again. Heirloom seeds bring history alive and connect past, present and future together like nothing else can. For me personally, when I grow and eat Mexi- can chiles each summer, I remember my Mexican grandmother toiling in the garden all day, with me running along beside her and watching as she lov- ingly honored the soil and seeds, and then in the kitchen cooking the same foods that were passed down to her. As I plant each variety each spring, I am instantly transplanted back to cultures of the past, to the gardens of our forefathers, including my grandparents. Now I hope to plant a dream of good food and soil into our little daughter Sasha, who al- ready is captivated by the miracles of seed and soil.

  • Who Are Those Men in Red?
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2014 VOLUME 8 NO. 49 REPORT TO COUNCIL ON STONEGATE PROJECT NATE’S VERY EXCELLENT IDEA! REVISIONS DELAYED According to City Manager Elaine Aguilar, the property at 610 Baldwin Court will not be on the December 9th City Council agenda. As a result of conflicting schedules, the parties representing the owner of the property and Sierra Madre City Council members Denise Delmar and Gene Goss were unable to meet before Tuesdays meeting. Therefore, because of the holidays, the matter will be heard at the council’s first meeting of the new year, January 13th. WHO ARE THOSE MEN IN RED? In early October when most children were planning their Halloween costumes, six year old canyon resident Nate Howes was thinking about what he could do to improve the condition of the bridge over the “Wash” in the Canyon. He said to his father, “Dad, our bridge is the ugliest in the canyon! Can we paint it?” His father, Ryan Howes replied, that “he would have to ask for permission first because our bridge is owned by the city. According to his dad, “Nate marched back to our house, pulled out a sheet of lined first-grader paper and said “Who’s the mayor?” Early morning visitors to Kersting Court last week were likely to have run into members of Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Toronto FC’s. The team, along with five coaches came to Sierra Madre as part of their off season Cross Training. Their trainer, none other than Sierra Madre’s own Jim Liston “We wrote a letter with our request and a few of CATZ Physical Therapy and Sports Performance Center, is also their Director of Sports Science.

Father soon remarried and moved Billy to Glendale Heights, Illinois. "My family didn't fit into the culture we lived in, and then abuse made me feel even more alienated from what was going on. Plus, a lot of kids around me were being abused as well, so you didn't think, `Well, I'm different.' I cut myself, I stayed up all night. You know, I did things with sleep deprivation, and I got into I guess what you would call obsessive-compulsive behaviors these days." 1976 Jesse, Billy half-brother was born with Tourette’s and other disabilities. “This song (Spaceboy) is about my little brother. He's an interesting character. It's kind of about how he's different. He has physical handicap, it's hard to explain. He has a rare chromosomal disorder; it gives him a somewhat different genetic make-up. He has different physical and mental problems and yet somehow by all accounts, I'm physically and mentally OK. But I feel our lives are the similar. (Similar in the way that we are both) Freaks of nature, freaks of society, I always keep going back to something by Henry Miller. No matter how much he smiled, told jokes, shook hands, and patted people on the back. People still looked at him funny; they still sensed something wasn't right. I've always felt that way, that no matter how normal I appear, I was treated differently.” 1985, Billy graduates from Glenbard North High School and moves to St.
