  • A Historiography of World War II Era Propaganda Films
Essays in History Volume 51 (2018) A Just Estimate of a Lie: A Historiography of World War II Era Propaganda Films Christopher Maiytt Western Michigan University Introduction Heroes and monsters have reared their heads on celluloid in every corner of the globe, either to conquer and corrupt or to defend wholesome peace. Others grasp at a future they believe they have been denied. Such were the tales of World War II-era propaganda flms and since their release, they have been at turns examined, defended, and vilifed by American and British historians. Racism, sentiments of isolationism, political and social context, and developments in historical schools of thought have worked to alter historical interpretations of this subject matter. Four periods of historical study: 1960s postwar Orthodox reactions to the violence and tension of the war-period, the revisionist works of 1970s social historians, 1990s Postmodernism, and recent historical scholarship focused on popular culture and memory- have all provided signifcant input on WWII-era propaganda flm studies. Each was affected by previous historical ideologies and concurrent events to shape their fnal products. Economic history, lef-leaning liberal ideology, cultural discourse, and women’s studies have also added additional insight into the scholarly interpretations of these flms. Tere is no decisive historiography of WWII propaganda studies and there is even less organized work on the historical value of propaganda flms. My research is intended as a humble effort to examine the most prolifc period of global propaganda flm production and how the academic world has remembered, revered, and reviled it since. Tis historiographical work is not intended to be an exhaustive review of every flm or scholarly insight offered on the subject.

THE NAZI BLOOD PURGE OF 1934 APPRCWBD": \r H M^jor Professor 7 lOLi Minor Professor •n p-Kairman of the DeparCTieflat. of History / cr^LtxJ~<2^ Dean oiTKe Graduate School IV Burkholder, Vaughn, The Nazi Blood Purge of 1934. Master of Arts, History, August, 1972, 147 pp., appendix, bibliography, 160 titles. This thesis deals with the problem of determining the reasons behind the purge conducted by various high officials in the Nazi regime on June 30-July 2, 1934. Adolf Hitler, Hermann Goring, SS leader Heinrich Himmler, and others used the purge to eliminate a sizable and influential segment of the SA leadership, under the pretext that this group was planning a coup against the Hitler regime. Also eliminated during the purge were sundry political opponents and personal rivals. Therefore, to explain Hitler's actions, one must determine whether or not there was a planned putsch against him at that time. Although party and official government documents relating to the purge were ordered destroyed by Hermann GcTring, certain materials in this category were used. Especially helpful were the Nuremberg trial records; Documents on British Foreign Policy, 1919-1939; Documents on German Foreign Policy, 1918-1945; and Foreign Relations of the United States, Diplomatic Papers, 1934. Also, first-hand accounts, contem- porary reports and essays, and analytical reports of a /1J-14 secondary nature were used in researching this topic. Many memoirs, written by people in a position to observe these events, were used as well as the reports of the American, British, and French ambassadors in the German capital.

RICE UNIVERSITY ERNST KALTENBRUNNER AT THE SUMMIT: A STUDY OF THE LAST CHIEF OF THE SECURITY POLICE AND SECURITY SERVICE by W. R. HOUSTON A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS Thesis Director's signature: Houston, Texas June, 1966 Abstract ERNST KALTENBRUNNER. AT 'THE SUMMIT; ; A STUDY- OF THE LAST CHIEF OF THE SECURITY POLICE AND SECURITY SERVK W. R. Houston This thesis is a study of SS-ObergruppenfUhrer Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner, who, from January 30, 19^3> to May 8, 19^5, served as chief of the Security Police and Security Service of National Social¬ ist Germany. This post was one of the highest in the Nazi repressive machinery and one of the most important in the Reich as a whole. The first chapter of this study is devoted to Kaltenbrunner1s life from the time of his birth on October 3> 1903> until his ap¬ pointment as chief of the Security Police on January 30, 19^3* During this forty year period Kaltenbrunner, the son of a bourgeois lawyer, rose from law student to higher SS and police leader in Vienna. It was during these four decades that the interaction of the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy, the impoverishment of his parents, the tumult of the twenties, the depression, and other factors molded his character. During these years he first displayed the "bully-slave" nature which was later to become the dominant ele¬ ment in his character. It was also during the later years of this period that he joined the National Socialist Party and the SS.

David B. Hinton There has lately been a renewed interest in the work of the Gennan film maker Leni Riefenstahl, best known for her major works made during the Third Reich, Triumph of the Will and Olympia. Possibly some of this interest is atributable to the general surge of interest in the Third Reich and Hitler, or what the Germans refer to as the "Hitler Welle"; or perhaps it is because enough time has now elapsed between those times and these to allow the films to be studied with a minimum of emotionalism.

Hitler, Himmler, and Christianity in the Early Third Reich Abstract With the rise of the National Socialist movement, Germany became a hostile environment to many minority groups. Communists, homosexuals, and the Jewish community were all targets of the Nazi Party's aggressive rhetoric and physical assaults, but these actions have often overshadowed the Nazi's persecution of larger majority groups. German Christian communities, both Catholic and Protestant, would eventually be repressed by the Nazi government as well.

Humanizing Heinrich Himmler: Power and Alliances in Transition A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences Florida Gulf Coast University In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirement for the Degree of Master of Arts in History By Sara Elise Gottwalles July 24, 2014 APPROVAL SHEET This thesis is submitted in partial fulfillment of The requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in History ___________________________________________ Sara E. Gottwalles Approved:August 25, 2014 ___________________________________________ Paul R. Bartrop, Ph.D. Committee Chair/ Advisor ___________________________________________ Erik Carlson, Ph.D. ___________________________________________ Eric Strahorn, Ph.D. The final copy of this thesis has been examined by the signatories, and we find that both the content and the form meet acceptable presentation standards of scholarly work in the above mentioned discipline. Abstract Heinrich Himmler was known as Hitler’s executioner, the Architect of Genocide, an evil genius, a murderous monster, and der treue Heinrich. But the Reichführer SS, once a sickly child bent on placating and pleasing all of those around him had a great deal of influence during his rise to become one of the most dangerous individuals of the twentieth century. His rivalries formed his political career just as much as his friendships—interestingly enough, the two lines often crossed. This work examines Himmler’s rivalries on his rise, and peak of power. Some would argue that his downfall was also brought on by his enemies, but the evidence contained in this work states otherwise. Himmler was the cause of his own fall from power with at the very most, mere assistance from an outside source.
