James Cagney Lower East Side of Manhattan Cagney was born in a room above his father’s saloon on the James Cagney Lower East Side of Manhattan. He graduated from Stuyvesant Actor ( 1899 – 1986 ) High School in 1918 and briefly attended Columbia, returning home upon the death of his father during the flu pandemic. He started tap dancing as a boy and was nicknamed “Cellar- Door Cagney” after his habit of dancing on slanted cellar doors. Like his father, he was an amateur boxer, and was runner-up for the state lightweight title. Cagney began his Broadway ca- reer in the chorus of Every Sailor and then appeared in another musical, Pitter Patter. Also in the chorus was 16-year-old Frances “Billie” Vernon, whom he would marry in 1922. They were mar- ried till his death in 1986. He landed the lead role in the 1929 play Penny Arcade, receiv- ing rave reviews, and Warner signed him on at an initial $500 a week, three-week contract to reprise the role. This was quickly extended to a seven-year contract. Cagney’s first film wasSin - ner’s Holiday in 1930, the first of 68 he would make. Cagney’s seventh film,The Public Enemy, became one of the most influential gangster movies of the period, and the scene in which he smashes a grapefruit into Mae Clarke’s face is one of the most famous moments in film history. In 1938, he received an Oscar nomination for Angels With Dirty Faces, and won an Oscar in 1942 for his portrayal of George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy. He was nominated a third time in 1955 for Love Me or Leave Me. Cagney was declared by Orson Welles as “may- be the greatest actor to ever appear in front of a camera.” In 1956, Cagney took on one of his rare television roles starring in ROBERT MONTGOMERY’s Soldiers From the War Returning. This was a favor to Montgomery, who needed a strong fall season opener to stop the network from dropping his series. In 1969, seven years after Cagney retired, Montgomery proposed him for the Century. In 1984, Ronald Reagan awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Cagney died at his farm in Stanfordville, New York; his close friend President Reagan gave the eulogy at the funeral. James Cagney by EvErEtt raymond KinstlEr, 1980.

    THE CROWD ROARS Racking up ridiculous risks, clocking catastrophic chances, Mario Andretti spent the seven or more decades of his unequaled life and career collecting the world championship of Formula One, the national title of Indy cars, the Indy and Daytona 500s, Pikes Peak, plus, way back in 1970, winning his favorite race of them all the Sebring 12 Hours, the amazing sports car enduro where, Mario memorably exclaimed to me, “ I took more risks and chances than I would in three Grands Prix! ” All because of a Hollywood movie actor named Steve McQueen. Prior to Sebring, Mario probably never had met McQueen. But finding himself racing at Sebring against somebody who was just some Hollywood actor, was to Mario, an embarrassment – a giant one. Particularly because McQueen’s name was getting championed and chanted over the public-address system; and also because the actor’s racing car was an elderly orsche that was no great chariot of beauty or speed; and furthermore, because McQueen was, incredibly, blowing off Sebring’s usual international field, which included a full team of works Ferrari drivers, captained by Mario; and - in the most acutely embarrassing insult of all - McQueen, an erratic desert bike racer, had, just prior to the 12 Hours, taken yet another spill, broken more bones, and was being forced to brake and double-clutch with his left ankle imprisoned in a cast. INTRODUCTION On Sunday, September 19, 2004, the movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow1 ("Sky Captain") opened number one at the box office, taking in a total of sixteen million dollars for the weekend.2 The opening was notable not because of the relatively modest box office total, but because this stylish, almost totally computer-generated movie includes scenes performed by Sir Laurence Olivier, a celebrity actor who has been dead since 1989.3 While audiences are used to seeing living actors placed alongside dead celebrities in films, 4 commercials, 5 and music videos, 6 Sky Captain marks the first time a dead actor's reanimated clone7 performs completely original scenes-scenes the actor never performed when he or she was alive.8 Sky Captain showcases the latest step in the technological push toward what some call the "holy grail" 9 of reanimation-"virtual 1.
