It takes courage, almost to the level of foolheart edness, to produce an orginal show in a theatre in San Francisco using local talent. San Franciscans like to pride themselves on their sophistication as well as what a great theatre town this is yet the way they rush to buy tickets to admittedly weak plays that offer, not world renowned stage actors, but aged movie stars (not merely our currently so/d out "Boys” either, but within the past few years Katherine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert, and Deborah Kerr) while ignoring "nameless" local productions rather makes this a hollow boast Celebrity tennis or golf tournaments can be alot of fun, but are hardly taken seriously by knowledgeable fans of either sport. All o f which is particularly apropos right now because there are currently two locally produced orginal musical revues that each offer some fine entertainment. Their com bined ticket prices are appreciably less than a single to see our current Hollywood visitors . ______and yet I ’ll bet that their total audience for any two mghts in the next couple o f weeks won't equal that o f a single onewhich has paid heavily to see movie stars "live on stage.” Which is extremely sad for, as has been pointed out before in this column, unless we support local commençai theatre, we are just not going to have any.
