DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS THE HONORABLE ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has risen from his childhood in the City Terrace section of East Los Angeles to become one of the most admired and respected leaders of a major metropolitan area. Mr. Villaraigosa has devoted his professional life to public service. After graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School and attending UCLA, where he received a bachelors degree in history, he earned his law degree from People's College of Law. He then worked as a field representative for the United Teachers of Los Angeles and later as a California Assemblyman. During the time that he served as speaker of the Assembly, he oversaw the passage of legislation for the modernization of public schools, the largest urban neighborhoods parks initiative in America, and the Healthy Families' program. He was a member of the California Assembly a total of eight years before he was elected to the Los Angeles City Council. There, Mr. Villaraigosa helped to resolve an MTA transit strike, created the largest passive park on the Eastside of Los Angeles, and protected funding for the arts. Elected the 41st mayor of the City of Los Angeles in 2005, Mr. Villaraigosa is the first Latino to lead the City since 1872. He has made transportation, public safety, and reform of the Los Angeles Unified School District - the second largest in the nation - cornerstones of his administration. Increasing the quality of education available to all students is a top priority, and he has proposed a plan to improve student success and graduation rates, and to narrow achievement gaps between students in this diverse, multi-cultural metropolis. Mayor Villaraigosa was named one of "America's Best Leaders" by U.S. News & World Report, has been featured on the cover of Newsweek, and called one of the 25 most influential Latinos by Time magazine.
