The famouscoco de mer, from a palm-tree once believed to grow in the depths of the sea, is the largest seed in the plant kingdom. © UNESCO SUMMARY 2020 Conservation Outlook Finalised on 01 Dec 2020 GOOD WITH SOME CONCERNS The protection and management of Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve is generally effective and is supported by a national legal framework, although there is a lack of a national protected area system. The management authority is very competent and is effectively implementing science-based programs and outreach and education schemes. However, the future of the site’s key value, the coco de mer palm, is still under threat from illegal collection and over-exploitation for its nuts and kernel. The site's management has reduced both commercial harvesting and illegal collection of nuts based on scientific research, although the conservation impacts of these requires further assessment. The National Government and the managing agency are implementing targeted conservation measures and aim to tighten law and legislation to protect the species, which include an increase in penalty for poaching of coco de mer nuts. Current priorities for the Nature Reserve include continuation and expansion of the outreach and education programme; promoting an increase in the size and connectivity of Vallée de Mai within the Praslin Island landscape, with a legally designated buffer zone; increasing anti-poaching; and continuing to control the harvesting of coco de mer seeds while expanding a program of replanting seedlings. -

VALLEE DE MAI NATURE RESERVE SEYCHELLES The scenically superlative palm forest of the Vallée de Mai is a living museum of a flora that developed before the evolution of more advanced plant families. It also supports one of the three main areas of coco-de-mer forest still remaining, a tree which has the largest of all plant seeds. The valley is also the only place where all six palm species endemic to the Seychelles are found together. The valley’s flora and fauna is rich with many endemic and several threatened species. STATEMENT OF OUTSTANDING UNIVERSAL VALUE The UNESCO World Heritage Committee issued the following Statement of Outstanding Universal Value at the time of inscription Brief Synthesis Located on the granitic island of Praslin, the Vallée de Mai is a 19.5 ha area of palm forest which remains largely unchanged since prehistoric times. Dominating the landscape is the world's largest population of endemic coco-de- mer, a flagship species of global significance as the bearer of the largest seed in the plant kingdom. The forest is also home to five other endemic palms and many endemic fauna species. The property is a scenically attractive area with a distinctive natural beauty. Criterion (vii): The property contains a scenic mature palm forest. The natural formations of the palm forests are of aesthetic appeal with dappled sunlight and a spectrum of green, red and brown palm fronds. -

FINAL REPORT Biodiversity assessment, and strategic conservation planning, for the riparian forests of the Spiny Forest Ecoregion of Madagascar. By: Alison Cameron (PhD student, Leeds University, UK) and Maminarina Dutel Ravoninjatovo (DEA student, University of Tulear, Madagascar) Introduction Madagascar has been called the highest biodiversity priority in the world but biodiversity conservation priorities within Madagascar are only now being identified. Recent research, biodiversity planning and conservation action have focused on east coast rainforest areas, while other areas of potentially very high biological interest have largely been ignored. The WWF Spiney Forests Ecoregion action plan indicates that West coast dry forests and riparian forests are under-represented in Madagascar’s reserve system, and are being degraded and fragmented at very high rates. This project is therefore addressing deficiencies in biodiversity data for this region in collaboration with The University of Tulear, WWF, and Frontier. Project Aims and Objectives To provide an opportunity for transfer of entomological survey skills from Alison Cameron (PhD student) to a Malagasy DEA student (Maminarina Dutel Ravoninjatovo). To provide the DEA student with experience of project decision making processes and meeting project by providing opportunities to integrate with project teams from WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature) and Frontier Madagascar. The production of a DEA thesis, co-supervised by the University of Tulear and WWF staff in Tulear. To make field survey data publically available through the national biodiversity data base, known as the “Platforme D’Analyse” (PDA)*. Training Initial training was conducted in Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, between the 29th - 31st Oct 2002. Alison spent 3 days in the field training Dutel (Photo 1 right) and also Edidy (Photo 1, left) who runs the small natural history museum at Beza Mahafaly. -

The following account of the Lepidoptera (Rhopaloc.era) taken by members of the Museum Expedition to the Chyulu Range, is mainly a systematic list of the species obtained. At the time of the visit, April to July, 1938 (that is just toward the end, and after the long rains) insect life was remark• ably scarce, and although systematic search was made over all portions of the hills from 3,000 to 7,000 feet, at no time were butterflies numerous. The material taken can be considered representative of the range for that particular season, but there is little doubt that insect life would be more plentiful just after the short rains, as it undoubtedly is on the surrounding plains, especially in the Kibwezi- Voi areas. In spite of the paucity of insect life, certain new records have been established, thus Papilio hornimani is recorded for the first time from within Kenya boundaries, although known for many years to inhabit the forests of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Charaxes ful• vescens nr. acuminatus, also of Tanganyika, was taken on the range. Two new races of Liptenines of the genus Pentila are recorded, whilst a new ACTaea,a new Papilio, and a new race of Amauris are described. The Lepidoptera collected have a definite relationship to the vegetational zones and the distribution of certain plant species at various altitudes and portions of the hills. -
