Recipient: Bill Madden, Dave Van Dyck, Bob Elliott, Rick Hummel Recipient: Bill Madden, Dave Van Dyck, Bob Elliott, Rick Hummel, Claire Smith, Steve Hirdt, Jack O'Connell, Glenn Schwarz, Tracy Ringolsby, Mark Whicker, Ken Nigro, Baseball Writers Association of America's Historical Overview Committee, and Jeffrey Idelson Letter: Greetings, I just signed the following petition addressed to: Base Ball Writers Association of America's Historical Overview Committee. Recognize Daniel Lucius “Doc” Adams as a pioneer of our National Pastime. In seeking the origins of our National Pastime, it is important to search out and recognize the pioneers who were instrumental in its formation rather than perpetuate myths and half-truths and include Doc Adams on the Pre-Integration Era ballot submitted to the Pre-Integration Era Committee for consideration for inclusion in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Daniel Lucius “Doc” Adams was an early pioneer of our National Pastime, the great game of baseball, and should be recognized as such with enshrinement in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Doc Adams was an American baseball player and executive who is regarded by historians as an important figure in the sport's early years. He played an important role during the seminal years of the game and his contributions are as significant as those of other early pioneers, Alexander Cartwright and Henry Chadwick, who already enshrined in the Hall. The first step to enshrinement is to have him included on the 2012 National Baseball Hall of Fame Pre-Integration Era ballot. We therefore petition the BBWAA Historical Overview Committee to look back beyond 1876, evaluate the accomplishments and contributions of Doc Adams and include him on this year’s ballot so that he may be considered, voted on and ultimately selected by the Pre- Integration Era Committee for induction into the Hall of Fame. In the spirit getting to the truth about the roots of the game and acknowledging those men were instrumental in formulating our National Pastime, please consider including Daniel Lucius “Doc” Adams on the National Baseball Hall of Fame Pre- Integration Era ballot in 2012. • A's News Clips, Friday the 13Th, August, 2010 Errors Come With
A’s News Clips, Friday the 13th, August, 2010 Errors come with catch for Oakland A's infield By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune A's shortstop Cliff Pennington is susceptible to flubbing a routine play on occasion, and he is just as likely to dazzle with a play worthy of the highlight reel. Indeed, the defensive work of Pennington and his infield teammates has been a mixed bag this season. Whatever judgments you cast on the A's infield defense depend largely on the numbers you emphasize. Pennington entered Thursday's play leading American League shortstops with 17 errors. Daric Barton was tied for most among AL first baseman with 10, and third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff had 10 errors, more than tripling his total from last season. Sure-handed second baseman Mark Ellis has stood out in that category, having committed just one error. But although errors are the most basic and easily understood statistic available to critique defensive play, they tell only part of the story. "I'm not overly concerned with the errors," A's infield coach Mike Gallego said. "The big errors to me are the ones that produce a run. When you go over them, I know there's been a few, but I don't recall that happening too often." The A's allowed 76 unearned runs in 2009, second most in the AL. So far this year they've allowed just 38, putting them on pace to lower that total significantly. Pennington is making his share of mistakes in his first full season as the starting shortstop.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 17, 2015 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1978-The Reds are the first to don green uniforms for a St. Patrick’s Day exhibition. The Reds even order green catching gear for the occasion. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Even if reinstated, Pete Rose's Hall future uncertain By C. Trent Rosecrans / Cincinnati Enquirer / [email protected] / @ctrent Even if Pete Rose is reinstated to baseball, that would not guarantee him an easy road to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. On Monday, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Rose had formally applied to have his lifetime ban lifted. Manfred said he would "deal with" Rose's request. Rose, who has been banned from the game since 1989, was ruled ineligible for the Hall in 1991, when the organization voted to ban players on baseball's permanently ineligible list. If reinstated, Rose would have to be elected to the Hall by Expansion Era Committee, according to Hall of Fame spokesman Brad Horn. "Rose would be an eligible candidate for Hall of Fame consideration based on if he were to be reinstated by Major League Baseball," Horn wrote to the Enquirer in an email on Monday. "Should Rose be moved off Baseball's Ineligible list, his candidacy would fall to the Expansion Era Committee (which next votes next winter – 2016 for Induction in 2017), based on the rules for election. Only candidates who last appeared in a major league game within a 15-year window can be considered by the BBWAA."' Rose's induction into the Hall of Fame would rest on a 16-member committee that meets at baseball's annual Winter Meetings, needing the same 75 percent standard that is required by the constituency of the members of the BBWAA who have earned voting privileges by being active members of the organization for 10 years.

  • The Twelve Year Rain Delay: Why a Change in Leadership Will Benefit the Game of Baseball

COMMENTS THE TWELVE YEAR RAIN DELAY: WHY A CHANGE IN LEADERSHIP WILL BENEFIT THE GAME OF BASEBALL Jacob F. Lamme * It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. 1 [E]xamining the business of baseball is like looking at the sun, you can‘t do it for very long before you have to turn away. 2 INTRODUCTION Baseball is a beautiful game. Despite the recent surge in the popularity of professional football and basketball, baseball is— and will always be—the greatest game ever played. Baseball is so graceful and elegant that even the United States Supreme Court could not resist professing its love for the game and its players: [T]here are the many names, celebrated for one reason or another, that have sparked the diamond and its environs and that have provided * B.A., University at Albany, 2002; Albany Law School, Class of 2005. • Cincinnati Reds'
Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings December 15, 2015 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1933 - The major leagues agree on a uniform ball, to be livelier than the National League ball and to match the American League balls. Owners also agree to ban Sunday doubleheaders until after June 15. MLB.COM Commissioner Manfred denies reinstatement for Rose Hall of Fame: All-time hits leader 'remains ineligible' for Cooperstown consideration By Paul Hagan / MLB.com Pete Rose, who was given a lifetime ban for betting on baseball, will not be reinstated and will continue to be banned from working in baseball, Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Monday. "Mr. Rose has not presented credible evidence of a reconfigured life either by an honest acceptance by him of his wrongdoing, so clearly established by the Dowd Report, or by a rigorous, self-aware and sustained program of avoidance by him of the circumstances that led to his permanent eligibility in 1989. Absent such credible evidence, allowing him to work in the game presents an unacceptable risk of a future violation by him of Rule 21, and thus to the integrity of our sport," Manfred wrote. "I, therefore, must reject Mr. Rose's application for reinstatement." The all-time hits leader, 74, was placed on the permanently ineligible list for violating Major League Baseball's strict rule against betting on baseball on Aug. 23, 1989. Subsequently, the Board of Directors of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum declared that all players on that list would also be ineligible for election. Manfred's decision, which was communicated to Rose both verbally and in writing, does not directly address that issue.
