6 Staff Directory.indd 6 8/26/19 3:58 PM Q-AND-A WITH BY KURT LOE

Q. What’s the best thing about having a 12-year deal? A. The best thing about having a 12-year deal is knowing that you are going to be in this spot for a while. And I know what to expect. Each and every I come in, I know where I’m going to be.

Q. What is it going to mean that for 12 years you don’t have to worry about anything? A. Yeah, that’s another big thing is just being able to go out there and play. I don’t have to worry about any other things. I don’t have to worry about a contract and I can just do my thing and just go out and play baseball.

Q. Did that ever become a concern for you? A. Ah, no. But, you know, it’s definitely comforting.

Q. How much of an interest was it to look at the market? A. There was. But, I’m obviously happy here. So, my wife and I made that decision that we wanted to stay.

Q. What do you like most about playing in Southern ? A. You cannot beat the weather — every night 70 degrees. And obviously, living by the beach is awesome.

Q. What has this year, the last few years, taught you? A. Offensively, I know my swing. And just with experience over the last few years — not just the last two, year by year, getting better in all aspects.

Q. What about off the field? With your brother in law and now with Tyler? A. Yeah, it’s tough to get through. Life is short. We have to love our loved ones, hug our friends, family. You can’t take this life for granted.

Q. How did all that put this game into perspective for you? A. I mean, you don’t know what you have until you lose it. Obviously, with my brother in law and now with Tyler to be able to come in here with the guys and just see how we came together and know what we have in here. It is a great team thing.

Q. Were you impressed to find out what you had in here? A. Yeah, I was. I knew we had that. I think that really put us over the top just knowing that we knew we needed each other. And you saw that.

Q. Throughout all of this, you have pretty much become the spokesman. How do you like that role? A. I think it has been eight years now. And, obviously, we got great guys in here. Good veteran guys speak up as well. But I think the guys needed it. They look up to me and Albert and I think Tyler would have wanted me to do that.

Q. How do you look at your role on the team now and how has that from a lot of guys like Albert and Torii. They did the same thing. it changed? And I think it’s getting to that period in my career where it’s starting A. I think it has changed just by growing into a leadership role by to be my turn. speaking more and just being more vocal. Q. Having played eight years of some of the best baseball, Q. Do you like the leadership role? ever seen, what’s that like for you? Did you ever think it would A. I do. I always like to do what I can to help the team win, to help be like this? the team improve. And obviously, if there are young guys who need A. I mean, obviously, you have to have trust in your ability and advice, I’m here in any way from my swing to their swing, on the believe in yourself. I just try to get better every other day. And I field off the field. If they have anything (questions). I think I learned think coming in here and learning things. I have just always been positive and had that confidence.

Q. What type of things have you learned? A. I think just finding my swing. The biggest thing is, offensively, just knowing when my swing feels good and when it does not.

Q. So how hard is that? A. It’s tough. The game is crazy. Sometimes you feel good at the plate and you don’t get any hits. And sometimes you go up there, not so hot, and you get a . So it’s a crazy game and you have got to stay positive.

Q. What do you like most about playing this game? A. I think playing with my teammates and winning. We have got a great group of guys now in this clubhouse and it’s a joy coming to the field. 10

Q. What is the least favorite thing about playing Q. What do you look for in good equipment, the game? bats in particular? A. My least favorite is losing. I think everybody’s A. Just comfort and the look. You have to look least favorite thing is to lose. good to play well. I have always swung Old Hickory because I like it. Q. From day one, how do you handle losing? A. It is a long season so you have to turn the page. Q. What is the offseason like for you? Once it’s over, it’s over and the next day comes and A. I like to kind of keep it low key. I like deer hunting you have to try and win the next one. and fishing and playing golf.

Q. How hard has it been for you to learn how to Q. How do you cope with being a superstar? Do turn that page? you feel any pressure to live up to your billing A. It is tough because obviously losing sucks. You or responsibility to those who look up to you want to win. I think over the years, you’ve learned especially the kids? What do you tell them, or how to turn the page quickly. I think if you carry it would you tell them, when you hear things like over to the next game, it hurts you. I want to be just like Mike Trout? A. I try to be myself. I don’t put pressure on myself. Q. Is there a key for you to it? I don’t try to do too much. If you try to do too much A. I don’t think it is a key. I think it is just going home that is when you get into trouble. I have fun and and going to sleep and waking up to a new day. that’s the biggest thing — you always want to have fun. You want to put a smile on every kids face and Q. Are you starting to feel like there are more give back all you can by giving them the opportunity to play baseball important things than this game or is the game still No. 1 and meet me. I know as a kid I would have liked the opportunity to for you? meet a guy who played if that is one of the A. Obviously family and my wife, they always come first before things in life that you want to become. It all starts in school you get anything. But coming to the field, seeing my teammates and just good grades first and athletics come second. seeing everybody and the friendships that I have developed over the years means a lot to me too. Q. Do you like the idea of being a role model for the youngsters? A. I enjoy it a lot. I try to lead people in the right way and put smiles Q. What do you like to do in your spare time during the season? on kids’ faces and stay out of trouble. A. I like to golf. I like to hang out with friends, my wife and the dog. Q. Where do you see yourself in another 10 years? Still on the Q. What about video games? diamond? A. No, I will leave that to Fletch and the A. Hopefully, I’m still playing. I want guys. I am not a big video game guy really. to be in this game as long as I can as Q. What about a TV or movie watcher? long as my body holds up and go from A. I mean, every once in a while. I think there. Kole gives me a good TV show to watch. Q. What do you think about when Like Homeland. you hear your name mentioned Q. How important is the equipment with the all-time greats ever to play that you use to play this great game? this game? A. I think it is big. I think that I have a comfort A. It means a lot. Obviously, a lot of guys zone with the stuff I like and stuff that I use pave the way for you. For me to go out with the Nike shoes and the Nike and play my game and be compared gloves and obviously Old Hickory bats. That to the way the all-time greats play the is what I’ve been using my whole career. game means a lot to me. 12

Outfielder Jarrett Parker, had 21 home runs through 79 games in Salt Lake, the organization’s Triple-A affiliate. Thaiss is one of the young guns the Angels are counting on moving forward. David Fletcher (24) and Luis Rengifo (22) have shown they belong in and there is, of course, , who is only 25. With fast-rising prospect (20) nearly ready to join the major league team, the Angel future is in nice — as in Thaiss — hands. Club General Manager Billy Eppler said of Thaiss and other young players: “They’re handling the responsibility and I feel good about how they’ve developed and how they are competing and learning and growing. Through his minor league career with the Angels, he was a consistent hitter in the .280 range and his power increased with 16 homers last season and 14 more in a little more than half a season this year before he was called to the Angels. In this year he hit .372 and the Angels noticed. “We know he can hit,” said Manager . Drafted as a catcher, he had been switched to first base, but the Angels were in more need of another infield position — third base. So Thaiss got another glove. “The ground balls that were hitting me in the chest — it’s a lot different than first base,” Thaiss said. “There were some growing pains, some challenges when I first started over there. It’s kind of smoothed out.” Thaiss’s early contributions were significant. When Taylor Cole and Felix Pena combined for a no-hitter in July, it was a sparkling defensive play by Thaiss — at third base — that preserved the no-no. He then hit a three-run homer against Seattle to give the Angels a come-from-behind win on July 14 and two weeks later had a two-homer game against the Orioles, the last one winning the game. Thaiss, who signed for a $2.15 million bonus when drafted, had five home runs in an 11-game stretch, splitting time between first and third. “Every game you can help contribute, help do your job for your team, it’s good for your confidence,” he said. “He’s had an unbelievable season at Triple-A,” Angels center

IN THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY Chick-fil-A’s local ownership means local involvement in the communities they serve From spirit nights to merchandise fundraisers, Chick- fil-A Operators support the communities where they live and work. Many local high schools benefit from hosting Chick-fil-A Leader Academy on their campuses; with local restaurant Operators supporting a year-long series of lessons ranging from servant leadership to facing your fears. From high school booster clubs, to elementary school PTAs, to local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, the left field bullpen wall is not the only place that Angels fans are able to see a Chick-fil-A banner hanging. “Partnerships like the one that Chick-fil-A SoCal has with the Angels allow us to capture the hearts of fans in the stadium, then drive traffic to our restaurants where that amazing in-stadium experience aligns with an amazing in-restaurant experience. What most fans may not know is that each and every Chick-fil-A restaurant is independently owned and operated. Chick-fil-A’s unique model of local ownership not only provides opportunities for partnership with big regional names like the Angels, but it also means that each restaurant Operator has the opportunity to support causes and organizations that are near and dear to the communities where their restaurants are located.
