    A’s News Clips, Friday the 13th, August, 2010 Errors come with catch for Oakland A's infield By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune A's shortstop Cliff Pennington is susceptible to flubbing a routine play on occasion, and he is just as likely to dazzle with a play worthy of the highlight reel. Indeed, the defensive work of Pennington and his infield teammates has been a mixed bag this season. Whatever judgments you cast on the A's infield defense depend largely on the numbers you emphasize. Pennington entered Thursday's play leading American League shortstops with 17 errors. Daric Barton was tied for most among AL first baseman with 10, and third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff had 10 errors, more than tripling his total from last season. Sure-handed second baseman Mark Ellis has stood out in that category, having committed just one error. But although errors are the most basic and easily understood statistic available to critique defensive play, they tell only part of the story. "I'm not overly concerned with the errors," A's infield coach Mike Gallego said. "The big errors to me are the ones that produce a run. When you go over them, I know there's been a few, but I don't recall that happening too often." The A's allowed 76 unearned runs in 2009, second most in the AL. So far this year they've allowed just 38, putting them on pace to lower that total significantly. Pennington is making his share of mistakes in his first full season as the starting shortstop.

    Lewis R. Dorman, IV. Ghosts of Glory: a Bibliographic Essay Concerning Pre- 1941 Baseball Autobiography and Oral History. A Master’s Paper for the M.S. in L.S degree. April 2005. 93 pages. Advisor: Jerry Saye. This paper documents published sources related to autobiographies and oral histories of baseball players, pitchers, and managers who performed the preponderance of their professional career before the United States of America’s involvement with the Second World War. The paper separates the individual autobiographies into three sections based upon the era in which the player is most associated with: the Iron Age (1869-1902), the Silver Age (1903-1922), and the Golden Age (1904-1941). Each section arranges the players alphabetically by surname, and every player entry contains a photograph, brief biographical information, a quotation from the autobiography, and lists of anecdotal works, biographies, films, and museums correlating to the player, when available. The fourth section of the paper concerns oral history (1869-1941), arranging the monographs alphabetically, with each entry including information about the players interviewed similar to the first three sections, but arranged by the player’s occurrence in the monograph.     America's Presstime: How Images Of Baseball Reporters Have Shaped the Perception of Our National Sport and The Profession Of Journalism By Chad Sabadie “You call ourselves writers, and all we do is watch ballgames, argue about everything and just get drunk a lot. You call that writing?” asks sportswriter Al Stump of his colleagues in the movie Cobb. 1 What is a baseball sportswriter? Is it someone who merely reports on daily games and activities? Or is it someone who plays a larger role in the world of the players and fans with whom he associates? What is the image that comes to mind when one mentions a baseball reporter? The image of a baseball reporter is varied at best. Some see him or her as just another hard worker out to do his or her job. Others see an intrusive antagonist who will do anything to break a story. Over the years, the public has seen many images of baseball writers, and not while attending games at the ballpark. They’re seen in America’s other favorite pastime, the movies. It’s on the big screen that the different personalities and traits are truly exposed. Some images are constant from film to film, while others may just flash up once in a while. In baseball movies specifically, the public comes across a wide spectrum of personas that reveal what it takes to make a baseball writer. Many of the images are projections of real life transformed to film. There are writers who believe that their word is final, while others are friends who aid ballplayers throughout their careers.

Fullerton and the Ethical Impulse in His Writing By Steven Mark Klein From the moment F. Scott Fitzgerald made the crooked World Series of 1919 a central image of disillusionment in his great American novel. The Great Gatsby (Charles Scribner's Sons. 1925). the Black Sox scandal has been part of our national consciousness and mythology. Popular literature and the mass media, particularly Eliot Asinofs seminal study, Eight Alen Out: The Black Sox and the 1919 World Series (Holt, Rinehart and Winston. 1963) and John Sayles' 1988 film, "Eight Men Out." have helped shape public awareness of the scandal. Those efforts. however, have been as disapproved of and. ultimately, disregarded by organized baseball, as was the journalist Hugh S. Fullerton· s efforts to reveal the illegitimate series in 1919. The purpose of this research is to bener understand and appreciate Fullerton· s role. his possible motivation. and ethical impulse in reporting that the premier sports event m early twentieth century America was not on the kwl. To do that. it is important to understand details of the scandal and resulting cover- up; the nature of professional baseball before 1920. commonly regarded as a watershed year in the game· s history because of the introduction of the lively ball; and the influence of gambling on the game from its professional beginnings in 1869 through the Speaker- Cobb affair in 1917.

    Letter from James Lardner to his mother, Ellis Lardner (May 1938) James Lardner was born on May 18, 1914 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the second of four sons born to Ringgold (Ring) Wilmer Lardner, journalist and humorist, and Ellis Abbott Lardner, a Smith College graduate from a prominent Michigan family. In 1919, the Lardner family moved East and James, with his brothers, was raised in the affluent enclaves of Greenwich, Connecticut and Great Neck, Long Island. The boys came of age in the rich literary milieu formed by the writers and journalists the senior Lardners counted among their friends, including F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, Heywood Broun, and H. L. Mencken. Lardner attended Andover and Harvard and, following his education, was hired as reporter for the New York Herald Tribune. According to his brother, Ring Lardner, Jr., James' early journalism experiences were a “monotonous round of funerals, banquets,strikes,accidentsandminorcrimes…” After three years in New York City, Lardner transferred to the Herald Tribune'sParis bureau in 1938. While there he began writing articles on the participation of American volunteers in the Spanish Civil War. In March 1938 Lardner traveled to Barcelona in the company of fellow journalists Ernest Hemingway and Vincent Sheean to observe the conflict first hand. After witnessing an aerial battle that destroyed a bridge on the Ebro River and the dire state of the Loyalist forces, Lardner resolved to join the International Brigades. His initial attempt to enlist found him in a ragged battalion in Badalona far from the field of action. Eager to participate in the conflict he left Badalona, made his way to Mora-la-Nueva, and enlisted in the Third Company of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade early in May.
